You will start your <strong>Pilates</strong> training journey with the <strong>Studio</strong> <strong>Pilates</strong>® Matwork <strong>course</strong> module<br />

which covers over 70 <strong>Pilates</strong> mat exercises and teaches you how to instruct each and every<br />

one in a practical, supportive and interactive 3 day <strong>course</strong>. This <strong>course</strong> then qualifies you as<br />

a <strong>Pilates</strong> Matwork instructor and enables you to teach <strong>Pilates</strong> mat classes. We also offer an<br />

anatomy training module which is a prerequisite to the Matwork <strong>course</strong> if you’re new to the<br />

fitness industry or a great optional <strong>course</strong> if you are already in the industry, but would simply<br />

like a refresher.<br />

After your Matwork module is successfully completed, you may choose to continue your learning<br />

by enrolling in one of our 6 other modules. For example, you may like to take the next step with<br />

<strong>Studio</strong> <strong>Pilates</strong> ® Matwork Course Outline<br />

The <strong>Studio</strong> <strong>Pilates</strong> International® Matwork <strong>course</strong> is a 3 day comprehensive <strong>Pilates</strong> <strong>course</strong><br />

designed by Physiotherapists with over 12 years experience in teaching <strong>Pilates</strong>. It is tailored<br />

specifically for the health and fitness industry but is Physiotherapy based, so you not only learn<br />

the traditional <strong>Pilates</strong> exercises and how to teach them, but also the modern science behind<br />

them and the latest knowledge on core stability and injury management.<br />

The <strong>course</strong> is very practical, with small class sizes to ensure you learn:<br />

• Over 70 basic-intermediate <strong>Pilates</strong> exercises<br />

• Common spinal injuries and using <strong>Pilates</strong> for rehabilitation<br />

• Programming for athletes and advanced clients – how to challenge your clients’ core<br />

• Correct muscle activation of the deep core stabilisers<br />

• Assessment and correction of poor movement patterns<br />

• Assessment of posture and core stability<br />

• Pre/post pregnancy workouts and Women’s Health related issues<br />

• How to instruct a great <strong>Pilates</strong> mat class<br />

On completion of the <strong>course</strong> you will be a fully qualified <strong>Pilates</strong> Instructor and will be able to<br />

teach <strong>Pilates</strong> in either an individual or group setting.<br />

The <strong>course</strong> is based on the latest Physiotherapy research, and incorporates activation of<br />

Transversus Abdominus, Multifidus, Pelvic Floor, Iliacus and Deep Hip Rotators, Gluteal muscles,<br />

Serratus Anterior, Deep Neck Flexors and Lower Trapezius.<br />

In the <strong>course</strong> you learn not only how to activate these deep stabilising muscles at a basic<br />

level, but also how to challenge your clients and build global core strength for more functional<br />

rehabilitation and strength and fitness training, which enables you to program for clients of all<br />

levels and abilities.<br />

The Matwork <strong>course</strong> consists of 2 elements:<br />

1. A pre-<strong>course</strong> study component (approximately 30 hours of study)<br />

This is home study that can be completed in your own time via studying the <strong>course</strong> manuals,<br />

doing the workout DVDs and looking at the video tutorials in the Online Training Centre. This<br />

part of the <strong>course</strong> includes:<br />

• Doing the <strong>Studio</strong> <strong>Pilates</strong> Workout DVD 20 times to practice – approximately 10 hours<br />

• Watching the videos in the Online Training Centre and read over the <strong>course</strong> manuals –<br />

approximately 14 hours<br />

• Completing the online multiple choice pre-<strong>course</strong> exam – approximately 1 hour<br />

2. A 3 day practical face-to-face workshop<br />

After completing the required study, t<strong>here</strong> is a 3 day practical face-to-face workshop in which<br />

you can revise all of the material you have learned and give you the chance to practice and<br />

refine your instructing skills and receive help and support from your instructor trainer.<br />

Face to face practical <strong>course</strong> <strong>outline</strong>:<br />

DAY ONE<br />

• Postural types and Posture Assessment review<br />

• Review of Stabilising muscles and Core stability muscle testing<br />

• Teaching the Basics of <strong>Pilates</strong><br />

• Learning styles and Cueing Formula<br />

• Supine abdominal series – learn the technical points practice teaching the exercises<br />

Technical points and instructing practice of the following:<br />

• Side lying series<br />

• Supine Buttock Series and Kneeling Series<br />

• Prone Lying Series<br />

• Plank Series<br />

• Injuries and pregnancy programming<br />

DAY THREE<br />

• Group workout/class taken by the Instructor Trainer<br />

• Stretches<br />

• Revision of exercises<br />

• Practice instructing in pairs and in a group class setting<br />

• Practical examination<br />

Physiotherapy Based Learning<br />

Many <strong>Pilates</strong> instructor <strong>course</strong>s do not go through the specific rehabilitation exercises. Our<br />

<strong>course</strong>s cover injury management and rehabilitation in detail. Our <strong>course</strong>s have been created<br />

by physiotherapists and are physio based, but with the traditional <strong>Pilates</strong> exercises. As a result,<br />

you learn the modern science behind the traditional exercises. We also teach you how to<br />

challenge your clients. We have <strong>course</strong>s specifically tailored for both the clinical setting and the<br />

fitness industry so you can be sure your clients receive great results.<br />

<strong>Studio</strong> <strong>Pilates</strong>® Cueing Formula<br />

The hardest thing about becoming an instructor is not learning the exercises, but learning how<br />

to teach them. Our <strong>course</strong>s focus on ensuring you are confident to instruct each exercise – we<br />

focus on teaching you how to teach! We have developed our own cueing formula to help you<br />

to teach the exercises effectively and clearly.<br />

Interactive Learning Environment<br />

In your <strong>course</strong>, you will be able to ask as many questions as you like. The format is interactive,<br />

rather than a lecture. The <strong>course</strong> combines formal learning but it is delivered in an informal<br />

manner. Our <strong>course</strong>s have a great group format and dynamic – both the instructor trainers and<br />

<strong>course</strong> participants are t<strong>here</strong> to help each other and learn.<br />

Our <strong>course</strong>s are not just about the exercises, they also deal with the body – posture, core<br />

stability, correct activation of core muscles based on the latest research, pregnancy, sample<br />

programs that you can use, injury management and programming.<br />

videos on the entire <strong>course</strong> content – so you can learn it before you come along to the <strong>course</strong>.<br />

This means that when you attend the <strong>course</strong>, you can focus more on how to instruct well rather<br />

experiencing all the exercises for the first time. You can also use the online training centre for<br />

your ongoing study - maximising you learning before and after the <strong>course</strong>!<br />

Small Class Sizes<br />

practise your instructing on a range of different and diverse bodies.<br />

No Logging of Practical Instruction Hours<br />

The <strong>Studio</strong> <strong>Pilates</strong>® <strong>course</strong>s do not require you to log any practical instruction hours. Everything<br />

you need to learn will be taught through the online training centre and during your <strong>course</strong>.<br />

Modular Courses<br />

Our <strong>course</strong>s are modular, which means that you can just do the Matwork <strong>course</strong> if you like.<br />

You are not locked in to doing a whole package of <strong>course</strong>s. This means that you can teach the<br />

exercises that you have learnt straight away after you finish the <strong>course</strong>.<br />
