Kaymer driven for BMW glory
Martin Kaymer is back home in Germany for this week’s BMW
International Open hoping to drive off with the title and rekindle
memories of one of his most sentimental victories to date.
The US PGA Champion, who spent two months as World Number
One earlier this season, became the first German to win the BMW
International Open when he held off Dane Anders Hansen, a two-time
BMW PGA Champion, in a play-off at Golfclub München Eichenried, a
win he dedicated to his mother just before she passed away.
June 23 - 26, 2011
This Week on The European Tour
BMW International Open
Golfclub München Eichenried,
Munich, Germany
2010 CHAMPION: David Horsey (ENG)
PRIZE FUND: €2,000,000
Since that tearful win Kaymer’s career has gone from strength to
strength, winning his first Major Championship last year, making a
Ryder Cup debut and winning The 2010 Race to Dubai. He heads to
Munich straight from a tied 39th place finish in the US Open searching
for his tenth European Tour title after picking up his ninth win in the Abu
Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship in February.
Kaymer will be looking to reclaim the title for German after two
successive English winners, Nick Dougherty winning in 2009 and David
Horsey succeeding him last year.
Horsey came from five strokes back to win by one shot from Bradley
Dredge 12 months ago, a final round 67 sealing his maiden European
Tour title. The 26 year old added a second title to CV when he won a
play-off in the Trophée Hassan II in March having established himself as
regular contender on The European Tour since winning the Challenge
Tour Rankings in 2008.
Other former champions in the field include Colin Montgomerie (1999),
Thomas Björn (2000 and 2002), Miguel Angel Jiménez (2004), David
Howell (2005), Henrik Stenson (2006) and Niclas Fasth (2007).
They will be joined by Sergio Garcia who continues to rediscover his
form after finishing tied seventh in last week’s US Open.
Rory McIlroy produced a quite brilliant display to capture the US
Open Championship by eight shots at Congressional Country Club.
The wonderkid from Holywood in Belfast delivered the golfing
equivalent of a Hollywood blockbuster, setting record after record
as he kept the trophy not just in European, but Northern Irish
hands.
More than that, he became at 22 the second youngest European
Major winner of all time - and the youngest since 1872, the year
Young Tom Morris captured his fourth and final Open Championship
at 21.
STROKE AVERAGE
Defined as the average number of strokes taken per
round on The European Tour International Schedule.
DRIVING ACCURACY
Defined as both an average number of fairways per
round and a percentage of fairways hit.
DRIVING DISTANCE
Defined as an average number of yards per drive.
Two drives are measured per round on holes chosen
to counteract the effect of gradient or wind.
The drives are measured at the point they come to
rest regardless of whether they are on the fairway
or not.
GREENS IN REGULATION
Defined as both an average number of greens per
round and a percentage of greens hit. A green in
regulation is defined as the number of shots that a
player should take to reach the putting surface on
any given hole, being one for Par 3s, two for Par 4s
and three for Par 5s.
PUTTS PER GIR
Defined as both the average number of putts taken
per green in regulation and the average number
of putts taken per round on greens that are hit in
regulation. By doubling the greens per round figure
and thereby assuming two putts on each green in
regulation, we can then subtract the GIR putts per
round figure from this total to infer the number of
strokes under par the player will be per round from
the greens hit in regulation.
AVERAGE PUTTS
Defined as the average number of putts taken per
round. The use of the putter from off the green
does not constitute a putt as far as the statistics
are concerned.
KEY
AVE SPR - Average scrambles per round
AVE Missed GPR - Average missed greens per
round
SCRAMBLES
The frequency, expressed as a percentage to one
decimal place, of the player scoring par or better
on holes where the player missed the Green in
Regulation.

Players in bold currently occupy automatic team placings
Qualification for The Vivendi Trophy with Severiano Ballesteros teams began at the Alfred Dunhill Championship in December 2010 and will end after the Omega European
Masters in September 2011. The top five players on both the Official World Golf Ranking and The Race to Dubai will qualify for the ten-man teams.
Format:
The event will be a match play competition between two teams of ten players representing (a) Continental Europe and (b) Great Britain and Ireland.
On each of the first two days there will be a series of five fourball matches.
On the third day there will be a series of four greensome and four foursomes matches. On the final day there will be a series of ten singles matches.
Eligibility
Each team will be chosen as follows:
(a) The leading 5 eligible players from the Official World Golf Ranking as of Monday 5th September 2011.
(b) The leading 5 eligible players not otherwise qualified in (a) above from The Race to Dubai at the conclusion of the Omega European Masters (September 5th 2011).
Competition Condition:
Each match will be worth one point (Total 28), with halved matches earning 1/2 point for each team. If there is an overall points tie at the conclusion of the singles matches,
then both Captains will nominate two players from their respective teams to compete in a greensomes sudden death play off until a result is achieved.
First two European Tour Members and any European Tour Members tying for second place, not otherwise exempt, in a cumulative
money list taken from all European Tour events from the BMW PGA Championship up to and including the BMW International
Open, and including the US Open Championship will be exempt for The Open Championship at Royal St George's Standing below.
The first three players and anyone tying for third place, not otherwise exempt, in the top 20 of The Race to Dubai for 2011 on the
completion of the 2011 BMW PGA Championship, will also be exempt.
* Woosnam attempts to recreate history in the Netherlands
Ian Woosnam will attempt to recreate his own piece of golfing history when
he lines up in the field for this week’s Van Lanschot Senior Open at the Royal
Haagsche Golf and Country Club in The Hague.
The 53 year old Welshman already owns the distinction of having won back
to back on two occasions on The European Tour, in the Monte Carlo Open and
the Scottish Open in 1990, and in the Johnnie Walker Classic and the Heineken
Classic in 1996.
Now the former Ryder Cup Captain and Masters Tournament champion has the
chance to repeat the feat for the first time on the European Senior Tour this week
in the Netherlands following his superb triumph in the Berenberg Bank Masters
in Cologne on Sunday.
Woosnam produced an imperious showing in Germany, reminiscent of his
heyday, when he shot a brilliant final round 66 to come from two shots behind
at the start of the day and sweep to a two shot victory.
It was Woosnam’s fourth Senior Tour title, one which moved him up to third on
the Order of Merit, and he will now go in search of his fifth victory. “I am a little
tired after the tournament in Germany but there is no doubt that the win has
perked me up," he said.
“I always enjoy going to Holland and indeed I am opening a new golf course
close to Schiphol airport before I travel to The Hague for the tournament. It is
never easy to follow up one with another but I will be giving it my best shot.”
Woosnam will face a strong field in the Netherlands, including two other players
currently in the top five of the Order of Merit, second placed Andrew Oldcorn of
Scotland and Australia’s Peter Fowler who is fifth.
* The new kid on the block has arrived
Fourteen years after Tiger Woods won his first Major with a record score at The Masters, Rory McIlroy has done
the same at the US Open.
And even if the margin was not quite as great - eight shots as opposed to 12 - the statement was just as loud. There
is a new kid on the block and, as Ernie Els was predicting he is capable of re-writing history.
But what made the 22 year old's runaway victory at Congressional last night all the more remarkable were two
things above all else - he is the second successive Northern Irish winner and he suffered that golfing nightmare
at Augusta in April.
"It will probably take a little bit of time to sink in," said McIlroy after a closing 69 had taken him to an incredible 16
under par and had made him the youngest European Major Champion since 1872 and fifth successive European
Tour Major winner.
* Strong home challenge gathers for the Barclays Scottish Open
As the exciting journey to The 2012 Ryder Cup continues, June 20, 2011, marks the beginning of a highly
anticipated opportunity for golf fans around the world.
Beginning at 9am EDT on June 20, spectators who are interested in attending the 39th Ryder Cup may
register for a chance to purchase tickets online at www.RyderCup.com. Entries will be accepted through
to 11pm EDT on September 30, 2011. Registration is free.
The Ryder Cup will be contested from September 25-30, 2012, at Medinah Country Club, Illinois, which
has played host to three US Opens, two US PGA Championships, one US Senior Open and three Western
Opens.
“The Ryder Cup, the most compelling event in golf, celebrates a global game and continues to be one
of the most sought-after tickets in sports,” said PGA of America President Allen Wronowski. “The PGA of
America is proud to return to historic Medinah Country Club near Chicago for what will be the focal point
of the sports world in September 2012. The enthusiasm and excitement from golf fans is already palpable,
and we are thrilled to have their support.”
* New 5-star hotel and spa for London Golf Club
London Golf Club, a European Tour Destination and host venue of the 2008 and 2009
European Open, has unveiled plans for a new 5-star hotel and spa.
The proposed 130-bedroom luxury hotel and leisure development in Ash, Kent, will
complement the venue’s two existing Jack Nicklaus-designed signature golf courses,
established in 1993, and brings to fruition the vision for a world-class golf resort just
20 miles south-east of central London.
The development has been innovatively created in the style of a traditional Kentish
village, and will nestle in terrain overlooking the opening holes of the Heritage Course.
* Strong home challenge gathers for the Barclays Scottish Open
Two time Major champion Sandy Lyle, World Cup winner Marc Warren and two time European
Tour champion Alastair Forsyth are set to bolster the home challenge for the Barclays Scottish
Open at Castle Stuart from July 7-10.
The illustrious trio have been given invites to the tournament and will join a host of their
countrymen all hoping to emulate Colin Montgomerie who, to date, is the only Scottish golfer to
win the prestigious title; that triumph coming at Loch Lomond in 1999.
Lyle has been in sparkling form on the European Senior Tour this season, a win in the ISPS Handa
Senior World Championship at Mission Hills in China in March helping him to his current position
of fourth on the Senior Tour Order of Merit.
* Shinnecock Hills to host 2018 US Open
Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, in Southampton, New York, has been selected by the United States Golf Association
as the site of the 2018 U.S. Open Championship. The dates of the championship are June 14-17, 2018.
USGA President Jim Hyler said: "We are thrilled that our national championship will return to one of our country’s
most-storied venues. We are confident that Shinnecock Hills will provide a true challenge for the world’s premier
players, as it has for more than a century.”
The 2018 championship will be the fifth U.S. Open to be hosted by the club, which is the only venue to host the
championship in three centuries. In 1896, Shinnecock Hills hosted the second U.S. Open, and James Foulis won
the championship by three strokes over Horace Rawlins. In 1986, Raymond Floyd shot a final-round 66 to break
out of a tightly bunched field and win by two strokes over Chip Beck and Lanny Wadkins. In 1995, Corey Pavin
clinched his two-stroke victory over Greg Norman with a memorable 4-wood approach to the final green. In 2004,
Retief Goosen outlasted Phil Mickelson by two strokes to claim his second U.S. Open title.
