An Experience That<br />
Transforms <strong>the</strong> Soul<br />
Mysticism is not merely a belief or a philosophy; it is<br />
an experience that transforms <strong>the</strong> soul. If you aren’t transformed,<br />
you haven’t had <strong>the</strong> experience. When your soul<br />
is fully transformed, you and God are no longer two, but<br />
one. In <strong>the</strong> act <strong>of</strong> union with God, said <strong>the</strong> fourteenthcentury<br />
mystic Johannes Tauler, <strong>the</strong>re is “nothing in <strong>the</strong><br />
soul beside God.” 1 Saint Francis <strong>of</strong> Assisi so dedicated himself<br />
to <strong>the</strong> imitation <strong>of</strong> Christ that he was called “ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />
Christ.”<br />
The fifteenth-century mystic Saint Ca<strong>the</strong>rine <strong>of</strong> Genoa<br />
experienced oneness as submersion in <strong>the</strong> ocean <strong>of</strong> God’s<br />
love: “My being is God, not by simple participation but by<br />
a true transformation <strong>of</strong> my being.... I am so placed and<br />
submerged in His immense love, that I seem as though immersed<br />
in <strong>the</strong> sea, and nowhere able to touch, see or feel<br />
aught but water.… My Me is God, nor do I recognize any<br />
o<strong>the</strong>r Me except my God Himself.” 2<br />
As we shall see, <strong>the</strong> <strong>mystical</strong> path is a spiritual journey<br />
into <strong>the</strong> heart <strong>of</strong> God’s love. But <strong>the</strong> mystic knows that in
