<strong>Caloundra</strong> <strong>Regional</strong> <strong>Art</strong> <strong>Gallery</strong>, 2008,<br />

Two exhibitions from the Queensland <strong>Art</strong> <strong>Gallery</strong><br />

bookend this program. To begin Olafur Eliasson’s,<br />

The cubic structural evolution project 2004 contains 300<br />

kilograms of white Lego and was first presented at<br />

the ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum, Denmark, in 2004.<br />

It is now a highlight of the gallery’s collection and<br />

encourages everyone to build and participate.<br />

During May as part of Queensland’s 150 th Celebrations,<br />

Queensland Firsts and Our Queensland have come from<br />

the Queensland State Archives, Queensland’s largest<br />

and most significant collection of documentary<br />

heritage. In June the <strong>Gallery</strong> features some of the<br />

region’s finest artists. Three unique exhibitions<br />

involving six local artists reinforce the depth of artistic<br />

expertise on the <strong>Sunshine</strong> <strong>Coast</strong>.<br />

ReCoil explores contemporary Indigenous fibre art.<br />

Toured by <strong>Art</strong>back NT and fresh from the National<br />

Museum of Australia, <strong>Caloundra</strong> offers the only<br />

Queensland venue for the exhibition.<br />

Following the ever surprising <strong>Sunshine</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> <strong>Art</strong> Prize is<br />

a retrospective exhibition that celebrates the <strong>Art</strong> & Life<br />

of well known artist and tutor Brian Allison.<br />

This program ends with Frame by Frame, Asia Pacific<br />

<strong>Art</strong>ists on Tour. It includes contemporary photographic<br />

and moving image art from the Queensland Asia<br />

Pacific Collection.<br />

Queensland Firsts<br />

Inspired by rarely-seen archival records, eminent<br />

historians look back on the past 150 years and map<br />

the journey that has defined Queensland. The pivotal<br />

moments, the pioneers, the world firsts drawn together<br />

in an exhibition to celebrate Queensland’s 150 th<br />

Anniversary. Queensland Firsts is an exhibition promising<br />

an intriguing view through the window of Queensland’s<br />

cultural, economic, political and social soul.<br />

Scratching the Surface<br />

Local artist Sue Gilmour reveals unexpected traces<br />

of cultural influences and events that lie beneath<br />

the surface and connects the past and present with<br />

paintings of symbolic graffiti and imagery.<br />

2 in 1<br />

A digital and mixed media collaboration by Hinterland<br />

artists Noela Mills and Carol Wilkes. Inspired by the same<br />

subject source both have utilised their diverse artistic<br />

techniques to produce entirely different work.<br />

Fibre <strong>Art</strong><br />

<strong>Art</strong>Back Northern Territory <strong>Art</strong>s Development & Touring<br />

An exclusive Queensland event<br />

The innovations occurring in a lot of contemporary<br />

Indigenous fibre are quite revolutionary. ReCoil explores<br />

the influences underpinning some of the most<br />

recent and often dramatic changes to contemporary<br />

Indigenous fibre art in many parts of Australia.<br />

ReCoil also highlights the rich legacy of inter-cultural<br />

exchange behind the coiling movement and profiles<br />

the work of twelve Indigenous artists and three<br />

Australian textile artists who have worked together<br />

with their Aboriginal peers.<br />

Brisbane based artist Silke Savran will lead this textile<br />

workshop where participants will construct a ‘loom’<br />

from cardboard, paper or a picture frame. You will<br />

discover how fabrics are made by learning about ‘warp’<br />

and ‘weft’ and how to weave a variety of materials into<br />

a picture, a book cover or a purse.<br />

Raelene Hall leads this enquiry based workshop for<br />

adults that will look at the role of art in exploring<br />

personal areas of interest in a safe supportive<br />

environment. Emphasis in this workshop will be on<br />

the art process rather than a finished product.<br />

Low Relief Sculpture<br />

Clay and plaster will be used to explore the techniques<br />

and design elements associated with creating a low<br />

relief sculptural tile. Facilitated by Robert Natoli.
