Laser' Shoc'k P'ee1n<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Bombard<strong>in</strong>g metal parts with t<strong>in</strong>y<br />

metal or ceramic beads seems like a crazy<br />

way to improve<br />

those parts' performance,<br />

but shot peen<strong>in</strong>g is a proven method of<br />

improv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> fatigue life of metal parts,<br />

especially those that are prone to surface<br />

fatigue failures. Now. <strong>the</strong>re's<br />

an even more<br />

unusual tool-lasers-to perform <strong>the</strong><br />

same function,<br />

only better.<br />

Laser peen<strong>in</strong>g can extend <strong>the</strong> service<br />

life of orne parts, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g gears. The<br />

extension of service life can be anywhere<br />

from 3- IO lime <strong>the</strong> extension given by<br />

normal shot peen<strong>in</strong>g. accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>in</strong>du try<br />

expens.because laser peen<strong>in</strong>g puts compressive<br />

stress much deeper <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> part.<br />

The concept of us<strong>in</strong>g lasers to <strong>in</strong>troduce<br />

residual stresses <strong>in</strong>to a part's surface<br />

of a pari was <strong>in</strong>vented at Battelle of<br />

Colu mbus, OH, <strong>in</strong>lhe<br />

late 19605 and early<br />

1970s. But it really didn't. become practical.<br />

for production use until <strong>the</strong> late 19905.<br />

as <strong>the</strong> technology improved and commercial<br />

companies began to develop it.<br />

One of those companies, LSP<br />

Technologie Inc. of Dubl<strong>in</strong>, OH, was<br />

founded <strong>in</strong> 1.995 by fanner Battelle<br />

employees and has done work for <strong>the</strong><br />

U.S. Air Force. Ano<strong>the</strong>r company, Metal<br />

Improvement Co. Inc. of Paramus, NJ,<br />

has worked with Lawrence Livermore<br />

National Laboratory of Livermore, CA.<br />

to develop<br />

vice president of <strong>the</strong> company, COI1-<br />

struction, m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, fann<strong>in</strong>g, mar<strong>in</strong>e and<br />

over-<strong>the</strong>-road tractor truck transmission<br />

components are be<strong>in</strong>g required to have<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir guaranteed service lives extended.<br />

'One or a few problem<br />

gears can represent<br />

a lifetime limitation," Daly says.<br />

extend <strong>the</strong> lifetime of <strong>the</strong> entire transmission<br />

and be a very cost-effecti ve step <strong>in</strong><br />

quality<br />

LSP Technologies is also work<strong>in</strong>g<br />

extensively with gears, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g r<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and p<strong>in</strong>ion sets and o<strong>the</strong>r automotive drivetra<strong>in</strong><br />

gears, says president Jeff<br />

Dulaney.<br />

How It Works<br />

When most people th<strong>in</strong>k of lasers,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y th<strong>in</strong>k of <strong>the</strong>m as a tool for cutt<strong>in</strong>g<br />

through metal. but that' 1'101 how laser<br />

peen<strong>in</strong>g works. In fact, light from <strong>the</strong><br />

la ers never touches and never heats <strong>the</strong><br />

part surface. Instead, <strong>the</strong> lasers are u ed<br />

to generate a shock wave that causes<br />

compres<br />

ion at <strong>the</strong> part surface.<br />

The part to be laser peened is coated<br />

with an opaque, absorptive material-a<br />

speciaJ pa<strong>in</strong>t or tape that will vaporize<br />

when exposed to a pulse of laser energy.<br />

The part. is also covered<br />

with a th<strong>in</strong> layer<br />

of translucent material, which is usually<br />

water. A pulsed laser beam passes<br />

through <strong>the</strong> water and strikes '<strong>the</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>t or<br />

tape, cau <strong>in</strong>g a mall thickness of <strong>the</strong><br />

material to vaporize. The vapor absorbs<br />

<strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g laser light. creat<strong>in</strong>g plasma,<br />

which is trapped <strong>in</strong> a mal! gap<br />

between <strong>the</strong> abscrptlon material and <strong>the</strong><br />

water layer. The trapped plasma builds to<br />

a pressure of up to 100,000 atmospheres<br />

Technologie laser-peen<strong>in</strong>g process creates<br />

compressive stresses at depth rang<strong>in</strong>g<br />

from 0.040" to 0.060". Accord<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

Daly, Metal Improvement Company's<br />

laser peen<strong>in</strong>g creates ccmpressi ve stresses<br />

to depths of 0.040" to 0.080", III both<br />

cases, tile compressive stresses are significantly<br />

deeper than through shot peen<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

This extra depth provides even<br />

greater protectioll aga<strong>in</strong>st surface-related<br />

failures, such as fatigue cracks and corrosion<br />

crack<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Laser peen<strong>in</strong>g can be used <strong>in</strong> conjunction<br />

with normal shot peen<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
