Letter from the Executive Director
CATEGORY HEAD
Dear Friend,
I am very proud to present the New York City Alliance Against Sexual
Assault Resource Guide to Sexual Assault/Abuse Services in New York
City. Every effort has been made to ensure that the guide is a complete
and comprehensive listing of specialized programs within the city.
Included you will find hospital based rape crisis programs, child and
adolescent programs, sex offender programs, District Attorney’s office
programs and other specialized services. The criteria for inclusion is
either specialized funding or an ongoing agency commitment to training
and supervision in sexual violence issues.
What we could not do is evaluate these services. Inclusion in this guide
does not constitute endorsement by the Alliance. I recommend that
everyone who seeks assistance be a good consumer. While I understand
that this is difficult during a time of crisis, you still have to determine
whether a program or provider is right for you. You have the right to ask
questions about the program, the practitioners, their training and experience
with your issue, philosophy of care and their hours and fees. It is
important that you have a level of comfort with the answers and service.
I hope you find this guide useful. The Alliance is interested in any feedback
you may have about the information in this guide. Please feel free
to call the office at (212) 523-4344 with any questions or additional
information.
To your health and well being.
Sincerely,
Harriet Lessel
Things You Should Know
While Using This Guide
This resource guide is intended to help locate specialized sexual
assault/abuse services in your community. More detailed information
such as specific services of each program, their locations, contact information
and any possible fees that may be charged at their facilities can be
found within this guide.
If you have been sexually assaulted, abused, raped, and/or harassed,
and would like help- whether to report the crime or talk to a counselor, we
urge you to consult your nearest rape crisis program. Many rape victims
need to talk about their experiences in order to heal the emotional wounds
after an assault. The centers can help you.
Survivors: Identifying the services you require
In order to use this guide properly, you should determine your present
needs. If you have recently been raped and are in need of immediate
medical attention, please call 911 or consult your local hospital-based
rape crisis program. Hospital-based programs provide medical examinations
and rape crisis counselors 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They
provide follow-up counseling, medical care, information and referrals
and other services if necessary.
If you were assaulted some time ago and are in need of counseling, consult
your local rape crisis program about what to do in your situation.
They can offer you information about short-term, long-term and group
counseling as well as how to report the crime to the police and the ramifications
of doing so.
This guide also includes child advocacy centers that help treat child sexual
and physical abuse, sex offender treatment programs and criminal
justice centers. In order to utilize the following services, the New York
City Alliance Against Sexual Assault advises survivors to call these programs
and make an appointment to talk to a counselor, find information
about support groups, or ask about particular services.
It is advised when you call an agency or program, you need not ask for
the person listed as the “contact”. This name is given as a reference for
professionals.
The most important thing is to know that help exists for your recovery
after a sexual assault. You are not alone, and you deserve to receive all
the help necessary for your optimal emotional, physical and mental
health.
4
Terms You Should Know
The following definitions are provided to assist you while using this guide.
Adults sexually abused as children refers to adults with a past history
of child sexual abuse.
Child sexual abuse is when a child is used for sexual gratification by an
older child, adolescent or adult. It may or may not involve physical contact
ie., taking pornographic pictures of children.
USING THIS GUIDE
CVB reimbursement: NYS Crime Victims Board will reimburse a victim
for any crime-related expenses. If you are raped or sexually assaulted
and then treated at a medical facility, CVB funds will cover your expenses.
The crime must be reported to the police to access CVB compensation.
(Note: After 2/1/01, legislative change allows documentation
of a medical/forensic exam in a hospital to establish eligibility for CVB
compensation.)
Date rape drugs are drugs used to facilitate a rape by rendering the victim
incapable of resistance. These drugs include "roofies," GHB and even
alcohol. They are used to make the victim semi-conscious in order to be
taken advantage of.
Domestic violence is a pattern of behaviors used by one person in a
relationship to dominate or control the other. Domestic violence can
involve physical, sexual, emotional, economic and psychological abuse.
Those involved can be married, not married, gay, straight, male or
female. It can also occur in teen dating relationships.
DWI/DUI- driving while intoxicated or under the influence of alcohol or
any other drug.
Elder abuse is a broad term referring to the many forms of abuse
against an elder/senior citizen, such as, sexual, physical, or emotional
abuse, financial exploitation and/or neglect.
Group counseling can take many forms. Short term groups offered by
NYC rape crisis programs are generally held once a week for 12 weeks.
They are usually facilitated by a professional counselor. Long term or
ongoing groups can meet one time per week or one time per month and
are also facilitated by a professional. If interested in group counseling,
call each program for schedule/topics/times. Short-term group counseling
is generally 8-12 weeks, while long-term counseling can last one
year or longer.
CATEGORY HEAD
HIV Prophylaxis is a treatment given to prevent HIV infection immediately
after a sexual assault. It is most effective when taken within 24
hours of the incident.
Hotline is a telephone number in which a victim of sexual assault can
call and get immediate help or questions answered. Generally speaking,
hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week although there are some
that do not.
Medical/forensic examinations after a sexual assault include treatment
and documentation of injuries, testing for sexually transmitted diseases
and pregnancy, provision of prophylactic medication and collection
of forensic evidence. Evidence is only collected within 72 hours of
the assault. Medical care is always appropriate. If you are unsure about
whether or not you want to obtain medical care, please call your nearest
rape crisis program for assistance.
Non-offending parents usually refers to the parent that did not commit
the crime against their child. This term is generally used in cases of
child abuse or sexual abuse.
PTSD, or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is common after a rape. This
term is used to describe the reactions that one may have to a life-threatening
event (of which rape is one). These reactions can include but are
not limited to flashbacks, nightmares, problems with sleeping, changes
in appetite, etc.
Rape/sexual assault is a sexual act that is committed without one’s
consent. It involves the use of force or threat of force to penetrate the
anus, vagina, or mouth. Objects may be used as well and the term is
usually used to describe one incident as opposed to "abuse" which connotes
sexual assaults and/or contact over a period of time.
Rape Crisis Counselors (sometimes called Advocates) are trained NYS
Department of Health certified counselors from hospital based rape crisis
programs who provide emotional support to and advocacy for the victim
of a sexual assault and their significant others within the emergency
room.
Sexual abuse is sexual assault, physical/verbal molestation and/or
fondling that often occurs over a prolonged period of time. It can also be
a one-time incident.
6
Sexual Assault Examiners (sometimes called sexual assault nurse
examiners (SANE), or sexual assault forensic examiners (SAFE) are specially
trained nurses, physicians, or physician assistants who provide
medical/forensic care after a rape.
Sexual harassment is unwanted behaviors such as suggestive comments
about your appearance, touching or other physical contact, sexual
jokes or comments, sexual advances or exposure to sexually explicit
materials. (Definition provided by Women’s Rights At Work)
USING THIS GUIDE
Significant others are family members, relatives, close friends, and
partners that can be affected by the crime committed against you.
Transgender is a term used to describe anyone who bends or challenges
"traditional" gender roles, for example, gay cross dressers,
straight cross dressers, transsexuals, drag queens and kings, transgenderists
and androgynes.
For Professionals
This guide was created not only for survivors but for those professionals
that guide them towards recovery as well. We hope professionals use
this guide to:
■
■
facilitate networking and information-sharing
assist in making referrals, and
help raise awareness about other programs within New York City.
Please note that the person listed as the "Contact" for each entry, in
most instances, is the person designated by the respective agency to
