Dear Friends,
The fall is well under way as I write these words, but somehow the strains of the music that
resonated in the Wood River Valley last summer are still resonating in my ears two months later.
I hope you agree that it was quite an amazing month, all told.
There is a unique magic to the Sun Valley Summer Symphony — a joyous and infectious alchemy
that I’ve never found anywhere else in the world. The musicians and I feel so privileged to be part of
this extraordinary community, and no matter where we hail from, coming to Sun Valley represents
for us the pinnacle of our year — hands down.
But music can’t exist in a vacuum. It needs an audience to act as a spark, igniting our creative
passions and truly bringing the music to life. So, I thank all of you reading this publication for
the part you play in making us feel so welcome and special. Playing our hearts out for you night
after night is the best way we know to say how much we appreciate you, our incomparable and
devoted audience!
For the past couple of years, I have concocted a list of some of the most memorable moments of
the season. It’s a fun and harmless piece of self-indulgence, and I hope you’ll permit me to continue
the tradition this year, too. In chronological order, once again, is my top ten list of highlights from
the 2012 season:

Brahms / Clarinet Quintet (July 23)
I’ve always adored Brahms’ autumnal masterpiece, and it
was a treat to hear this sensitive, committed performance
headed up by SVSS clarinetist Ben Freimuth.
Schoenberg / Verklärte Nacht (July 25)
Schoenberg’s early masterpiece of super-saturated
late-Romanticism is a piece I’ve been itching to do for
decades. I finally had my wish come true in Sun Valley.
Wagner / Immolation Scene from Götterdämmerung
(July 30)
The great Deborah Voigt returned to open the season
with what is now one of her signature roles, Brünnhilde,
fresh from her triumph at the Metropolitan Opera’s new
production of Wagner’s mammoth Ring cycle.
Elgar / Enigma Variations (August 1)
Our tribute to Sun Valley Summer Symphony founder
Carl Eberl culminated in a piece near and dear to my
heart, Elgar’s own tribute to the lasting joy of friendships.

Rachmaninoff / Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini
(August 5)
Jon Kimura Parker, a longtime friend of the orchestra,
made a welcome return in Rachmaninoff’s evergreen
Rhapsody, reminding us all of what a wonderfully
engaging and charismatic performer he is.
Mahler / Symphony No. 6 (August 7)
I could write a novel on this whole experience, but it is
suffice to say that for me this was one of the greatest
highlights of my musical life. The orchestra’s heroic
performance and the audience’s overwhelming response
added up to the best 50th birthday present I could
possibly imagine!
Tompkins / Boardgames (August 9, 11)
Sun Valley Summer Symphony Percussionist Joe
Tompkins’ ingenious miniature for nothing more than
5 wooden planks and metal tipped gloves brought the
house down, both on our Musicians’ Choice and Family
Concert programs.

Respighi / Pines of Rome (August 2)
The perfect sonic spectacular to show off the splendor
of the orchestra in the superb acoustics of the Pavilion.

Sibelius / Concerto in D Minor for Violin (August 10)
James Ehnes made a memorable and generous debut,
capping a superb performance of Sibelius’ demanding
concerto with no fewer than 3 encores.

Tchaikovsky / Symphony No. 5 (August 14)
I may have conducted this piece more than any other in
the repertoire, but there’s something unique about doing
it with the amazing musicians of the Sun Valley Summer
Symphony in front of a huge and appreciative crowd.
What a perfect way to end the season!

President’s
Letter
The Sun Valley Summer Symphony has been a part of my life for over 17 years:
first as an audience member; then serving on the Advisory Council and Board
and now as President of this incredible organization. Behind every great
organization are intelligent, dedicated and passionate people. Britt Palmedo’s
term as President ended in August, and it is with fondness and admiration that
I thank her for building a committed Board of Directors and nurturing a talented
staff. Thank you, Britt — you have paved the way brilliantly!

The Sun Valley Summer Symphony is known for many things: world-class
orchestra musicians and soloists; a peerless venue; dynamic programming; and
dedicated volunteers. But the most significant asset we have is you. Without
an enthusiastic audience and contributors at all levels, there would be no
free-admission concerts in the Wood River Valley. You make it all possible.
The 2012 season saw phenomenal attendance, especially given the smoky
conditions, and likely the most delectable picnics at any outdoor event! The
Big Screen continues to be the key ingredient to the lawn experience, and we
extend our deepest appreciation to a generous philanthropist who made it
possible for the Symphony to purchase the screen this year. The Big Screen is
owned by the Sun Valley Summer Symphony and maintained by the Sun Valley
Resort. This collaborative effort is another example of a long-standing friendship
with the Resort inspired by Earl and Carol Holding and Wally Huffman that
continues today.
Last summer, Elaine Wynn and an anonymous donor underwrote the allimportant
video production component of making the Big Screen operational.
We are deeply grateful for this support. The 8-person video crew, 7 cameras
and video production equipment comprise a system much like live television!
Capital improvements inside the Pavilion included a new, removable floor
installed under the strings, a riser system to elevate the percussion section,
and the purchase of percussion instruments and audio equipment. These are
all changes you can both see and hear!
Equally important to the community spirit of the Sun Valley Summer Symphony
are the housing hosts, ushers and volunteers who contribute their time yearround
in the office and especially in the summer. I extend a heartfelt thank you
to each of you and to all the donors who keep the music playing in Sun Valley.
It is my pleasure and privilege to lead this organization, and I thank all of you
for making the Sun Valley Summer Symphony the best of the best.

World-class music in a world-class setting
IT begins with YOU…
864 donors made free-admission concerts possible for all to enjoy.
67 in-kind donors contributed their goods and services.
78 extraordinary volunteers, 15 dedicated Board members and 43 staff, security,
production and video crew made the concerts possible.
106 gracious housing hosts shared their homes with orchestra musicians.
42,185 audience members attended the season concerts.
Pops Night was the highest attended concert last summer with 4,512 people on
the lawn and a full audience inside the Sun Valley Pavilion for over 6,000 people.

that any recording of that

It continues with EDUCATION…
SCHOOL OF MUSIC
Now in its 13th year of operating throughout the school year at the Community
Campus in Hailey, the School of Music offers private instruction, ensemble
performances and music theory as part of its Saturday “core program” for voice,
violin, viola, cello and piano. Gifted instructors travel from south-central Idaho
every week to teach Valley music students.

SUMMER MUSIC WORKSHOPS
Occurring during the first week of Sun Valley Summer Symphony orchestra concerts, the
Summer Music Workshops offer chamber ensembles, private lessons and music enrichment
courses for orchestral instruments and voice. The 2012 season saw the expansion of the
Workshops from 5 to 8 days for advanced string players who used the extra time to dive
deeper into ensemble coaching, mock-auditions and extra-curricular classes.
215 students from 12 states attended the Summer Music Workshops held July 30 – August 6.
The Summer Music Workshops were taught by 41 instructors, of which 19 were Sun Valley
Summer Symphony musicians. The staff and instructors were assisted by 39 volunteers.
