An electronic newsletter highlighting the achievements of South-Western students and staff
News Shorts is an e-newsletter developed by the Communications Department to share Good News items with
staff members throughout South-Western City Schools. To submit information, please send a brief e-mail to
Sandy Nekoloff at sandy.nekoloff@swcs.us. We also share this information at school board meetings, on the
Web site, via Facebook and Twitter, and with the media.
Alton Hall Elementary School
Congratulations to Alton Hall kindergarten student Shauna Cruz who wrote a book entitled Baron
BuntonHood’s Adventure: Grandma Comes to Visit. Shauna was at the Westland Area Library this past
Saturday to promote her book.
Jackson Middle School
Jackson Middle School sent six students to the Regional Math Counts Competition at Columbus State College:
Andy Colborn, Eric Sun, Katie Wilhelm, Olivia Yerkes, Lizzy Zinn, and Abi Lambert. The four girls competed
as a team while the two boys competed individually. Students answered questions for two hours.
There were 48 total teams and 339 students competing. Students participating in teams were also scored
individually. Jackson's teams placed 26 out of 48. Two JMS students scored in the top 25%: Eric Sun and Abi
Lambert. Abi also earned an At-Large spot for the state competition.
Jackson's Mathletes are coached by Heather Nesler, Diane Bierbuam, and Bruce Crouthamel.
Central Crossing High School
CCHS NJROTC Cadet Justus Parsley will compete in the National JROTC Three-Position Air Rifle
Championship on March 21-25. Competing in „nationals‟ is the pinnacle of JROTC marksmanship. Cadet
Parsley is the first CCHS student to earn this privilege since 2007.
Franklin Heights High School
Congratulations to FHHS student Madison Fast, who has been selected to attend Navy-sponsored STEM
camp the week of July 15 on the campus of the University of San Diego. Travel, lodging, meals and tuition will
be paid by the Navy. She is one of 160 out of 84,000 NJROTC cadets to be selected for this opportunity.
Grove City High School
The GCHS Gymnastics Team won the Central District Meet Championship this year with a school record of
140.075. Erin Maynard captured the District all-around title.
Congratulations to Thadeus Duffer and Rebecca Mix for being selected to the Ohio Music Education
Association All-State Choir.
Congratulations to Hillary Hobbs and Erin Tolar for being selected to the Ohio Music Education Association All-
State Band.

Congratulations to Will England for being selected to the Ohio Music Education Association All-State Jazz
Band.
Grove City High School and Park Street Intermediate School raised $4,882.72 for Autism Awareness during
the “Autism Game” in February.
Congratulations to the Grove City High School Orchestra for their superior rating at the Ohio Music Education
Association State Adjudicated Event. The orchestra performed in class “A” (the highest classification with the
most difficult music) and was awarded the top mark for their technical preparation and artistic interpretation of
the music.
The students performed as a full orchestra, meaning the ensemble included strings, brass, woodwinds, and
percussion. This was the fourth consecutive superior rating in the highest class for the orchestra. The Grove
City High School Orchestra and Boardman High School Symphony Orchestra are the only two full orchestras
in the state of Ohio to have earned the top rating in the top class four successive years. The group‟s contest
repertoire included Hector Berlioz's "Hungarian March,” Bedrich Smetana's "The Moldau", and Jean Sibelius's
"Finlandia."
South-Western Career Academy
Congratulations to the following Culinary Arts students who competed in the FCCLA Regional Competition at
the Columbus Culinary Institute:
Jessica Woods - Pastry Arts, earned a Silver Medal and qualified for State Competition
Paige Hummel - Pastry Arts, earned a Silver Medal
Ashheigh Mathews - Garde Manger, earned a Bronze Medal
Junior Hot Food Team of Rachael Armentrout, Grant Cochrane, Stormy Mullins and Breanna Owens,
earned a Bronze Medal
Senior Hot Food Team of Jonathan Cordle, Nicole McCormick, Sharelle McCuen and Yuliya Pugach
earned a Silver Medal
Congratulations to Culinary Arts student Shailyn Grisamore, who received the Top Leadership Award from the
Rusty Bucket Tavern and Restaurant in the 2012 Ohio ProStart Invitational.
