<strong>An</strong> <strong>electronic</strong> <strong>newsletter</strong> <strong>highlighting</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>achievements</strong> of South-Western students and staff<br />

News Shorts is an e-<strong>newsletter</strong> developed by <strong>the</strong> Communications Department to share Good News items with<br />

staff members throughout South-Western City Schools. To submit information, please send a brief e-mail to<br />

Sandy Nekoloff at sandy.nekoloff@swcs.us. We also share this information at school board meetings, on <strong>the</strong><br />

Web site, via Facebook and Twitter, and with <strong>the</strong> media.<br />

Alton Hall Elementary School<br />

Congratulations to Alton Hall kindergarten student Shauna Cruz who wrote a book entitled Baron<br />

BuntonHood’s Adventure: Grandma Comes to Visit. Shauna was at <strong>the</strong> Westland Area Library this past<br />

Saturday to promote her book.<br />

Jackson Middle School<br />

Jackson Middle School sent six students to <strong>the</strong> Regional Math Counts Competition at Columbus State College:<br />

<strong>An</strong>dy Colborn, Eric Sun, Katie Wilhelm, Olivia Yerkes, Lizzy Zinn, and Abi Lambert. The four girls competed<br />

as a team while <strong>the</strong> two boys competed individually. Students answered questions for two hours.<br />

There were 48 total teams and 339 students competing. Students participating in teams were also scored<br />

individually. Jackson's teams placed 26 out of 48. Two JMS students scored in <strong>the</strong> top 25%: Eric Sun and Abi<br />

Lambert. Abi also earned an At-Large spot for <strong>the</strong> state competition.<br />

Jackson's Mathletes are coached by Hea<strong>the</strong>r Nesler, Diane Bierbuam, and Bruce Crouthamel.<br />

Central Crossing High School<br />

CCHS NJROTC Cadet Justus Parsley will compete in <strong>the</strong> National JROTC Three-Position Air Rifle<br />

Championship on <strong>March</strong> 21-25. Competing in „nationals‟ is <strong>the</strong> pinnacle of JROTC marksmanship. Cadet<br />

Parsley is <strong>the</strong> first CCHS student to earn this privilege since 2007.<br />

Franklin Heights High School<br />

Congratulations to FHHS student Madison Fast, who has been selected to attend Navy-sponsored STEM<br />

camp <strong>the</strong> week of July 15 on <strong>the</strong> campus of <strong>the</strong> University of San Diego. Travel, lodging, meals and tuition will<br />

be paid by <strong>the</strong> Navy. She is one of 160 out of 84,000 NJROTC cadets to be selected for this opportunity.<br />

Grove City High School<br />

The GCHS Gymnastics Team won <strong>the</strong> Central District Meet Championship this year with a school record of<br />

140.075. Erin Maynard captured <strong>the</strong> District all-around title.<br />

Congratulations to Thadeus Duffer and Rebecca Mix for being selected to <strong>the</strong> Ohio Music Education<br />

Association All-State Choir.<br />

Congratulations to Hillary Hobbs and Erin Tolar for being selected to <strong>the</strong> Ohio Music Education Association All-<br />

State Band.


<strong>March</strong> <strong>2012</strong><br />

Congratulations to Will England for being selected to <strong>the</strong> Ohio Music Education Association All-State Jazz<br />

Band.<br />

Grove City High School and Park Street Intermediate School raised $4,882.72 for Autism Awareness during<br />

<strong>the</strong> “Autism Game” in February.<br />

Congratulations to <strong>the</strong> Grove City High School Orchestra for <strong>the</strong>ir superior rating at <strong>the</strong> Ohio Music Education<br />

Association State Adjudicated Event. The orchestra performed in class “A” (<strong>the</strong> highest classification with <strong>the</strong><br />

most difficult music) and was awarded <strong>the</strong> top mark for <strong>the</strong>ir technical preparation and artistic interpretation of<br />

<strong>the</strong> music.<br />

The students performed as a full orchestra, meaning <strong>the</strong> ensemble included strings, brass, woodwinds, and<br />

percussion. This was <strong>the</strong> fourth consecutive superior rating in <strong>the</strong> highest class for <strong>the</strong> orchestra. The Grove<br />

City High School Orchestra and Boardman High School Symphony Orchestra are <strong>the</strong> only two full orchestras<br />

in <strong>the</strong> state of Ohio to have earned <strong>the</strong> top rating in <strong>the</strong> top class four successive years. The group‟s contest<br />

repertoire included Hector Berlioz's "Hungarian <strong>March</strong>,” Bedrich Smetana's "The Moldau", and Jean Sibelius's<br />

"Finlandia."<br />

South-Western Career Academy<br />

Congratulations to <strong>the</strong> following Culinary Arts students who competed in <strong>the</strong> FCCLA Regional Competition at<br />

<strong>the</strong> Columbus Culinary Institute:<br />

Jessica Woods - Pastry Arts, earned a Silver Medal and qualified for State Competition<br />

Paige Hummel - Pastry Arts, earned a Silver Medal<br />

Ashheigh Ma<strong>the</strong>ws - Garde Manger, earned a Bronze Medal<br />

Junior Hot Food Team of Rachael Armentrout, Grant Cochrane, Stormy Mullins and Breanna Owens,<br />

earned a Bronze Medal<br />

Senior Hot Food Team of Jonathan Cordle, Nicole McCormick, Sharelle McCuen and Yuliya Pugach<br />

earned a Silver Medal<br />

Congratulations to Culinary Arts student Shailyn Grisamore, who received <strong>the</strong> Top Leadership Award from <strong>the</strong><br />

Rusty Bucket Tavern and Restaurant in <strong>the</strong> <strong>2012</strong> Ohio ProStart Invitational.
