SELECTION POLICY<br />

The team shall be nominated to ParalympicsGB following both<br />

trials for their confirmation. There shall be two (2) trials events<br />

as follows:<br />

• The British Gas Championships (50m) – London, 3rd-9th<br />

March 2012.<br />

• The British International Disability <strong>Swimming</strong><br />

Championships (50m) – Sheffield, 6th–8th April 2012.<br />

1. Individual Events<br />

1.1 Subject to 1.3 the overall fastest swimmer in each event<br />

and classification (S1-S14) from the two (2) trials will be<br />

nominated for that event providing that the performance<br />

equals or betters the published qualifying time.1<br />

1.2 Subject to 1.3 the second and third fastest swimmers in<br />

each event and classification (S1-S14) from the trials will<br />

be eligible for nomination for that event providing that;<br />

i. The performance equals or betters the published<br />

qualifying time;<br />

ii. There are sufficient places remaining for the event and<br />

classification following the nomination from both trials<br />

and relay squads; and<br />

iii. Providing there are sufficient places available in the<br />

total quota set by IPC <strong>Swimming</strong>.<br />

The selection panel will determine which swimmers are<br />

to be nominated for consideration by ParalympicsGB<br />

should the number of swimmers qualifying for events<br />

exceed the quota of places allocated. Please refer to the<br />

Athlete Slot Allocation Matrix for further details (page 6).<br />

1.3 If, due to illness or injury, established in accordance<br />

with 1.3.1 below, a swimmer is unable to compete at<br />

one or both of the above trials they may be considered<br />

for nomination provided that they have competed in<br />

at least one London 2012 Paralympic Games medal<br />

event between 17th December 2011 and 5th April 2012<br />

inclusive and have achieved the criteria relating to the<br />

published qualifying times and place availability as set<br />

out in 1.1, 1.2, and 2. British <strong>Swimming</strong> will appoint a<br />

medical practitioner in consultation with the swimmer.<br />

In the event agreement cannot be reached British<br />

<strong>Swimming</strong>’s decision shall be final to ensure their fitness<br />

to compete in the London 2012 Paralympic Games. The<br />

decision of the medical practitioner on fitness shall be<br />

final.<br />

1.3.1 Swimmers must notify the National Performance<br />

Director (NPD) in writing by 5pm on the day prior to<br />

commencement of each trials event, outlining any injury<br />

or illness within the previous six (6) weeks indicating the<br />

injury/illness and how the injury/illness has specifically<br />

impacted upon their performance at the designated<br />

trials. A medical practitioner will be appointed by<br />

British <strong>Swimming</strong>, in consultation with the swimmer.<br />

In the event that agreement cannot be reached British<br />

<strong>Swimming</strong>’s decision will be final to review the notified<br />

injury or illness.<br />

1.3.2 British <strong>Swimming</strong> will appoint a medical practitioner<br />

in consultation with the swimmer. In the event that<br />

agreement cannot be reached British <strong>Swimming</strong>’s<br />

decision will be final to ensure their fitness to<br />

compete in the London 2012 Paralympic Games.<br />

The ParalympicsGB Chef de Mission (CdM), NPD, BS<br />

Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and ParalympicsGB CMO<br />

shall reach a consensus view by way of a consultative<br />

process of the continued selection or de-selection of the<br />

swimmer using all known information. The NPD and<br />

CdM shall consult and their decision shall be final.<br />

1.4 Athletes who are not eligible to compete at the 1st trials<br />

due to their international classification taking place prior<br />

to the 2nd trials may have their performances from the<br />

2nd trials considered for nomination.<br />

1.5 For a swimmer to be eligible for consideration to<br />

compete in an additional event(s) all of the criteria<br />

indicated below must be met:<br />

1.5.1 The swimmer having been nominated for the team in<br />

either an individual or relay event as set out in sections 1<br />

and 2.<br />

1.5.2 The swimmer having achieved a time which is within the<br />

published IPC <strong>Swimming</strong> minimum qualifying standard<br />

(MQS) for that event.<br />

1.5.3 All additional swims are dependent upon place<br />

availability (3 entries per nation per event (S1-S14), for<br />

that event and classification.<br />

1.5.4 Swimmers wishing to be considered for additional<br />

events must compete in all events in which they wish to<br />

be considered at one (1) or both trials. Consideration will<br />
