A Word from Our BC!
Hello from the Horned Frog
Battalion! We are well into the
semester with many events
coming up after the break. Our
spring Joint Field Training Exercise
is taking place the weekend of
April 4 th through the 7 th .
We will join different 5 th
Brigade ROTC Battalions at Fort
Sill, OK where our cadets will go
through squad tactical training
exercises and land navigation
training. This event is crucial, as it
prepares our juniors for their
commission required training
event at Fort Lewis, WA this
summer. Additionally, the HFB will
have its Annual Award Ceremony
Thursday, April 11. Friends and
family are welcome and
encouraged to attend and
celebrate each cadet’s hard work
and effort throughout the 2012-
2013 school year.
Our year will come to a close at
our annual Military Ball honoring
the commissioning seniors. Senior
families will receive an invitation
to this event and are welcome to
attend and honor their son or
daughter’s contribution to the
battalion.
There are a lot of great events
happening in the HFB. I know our
cadets will continue to work hard
and put forth 100 percent effort
and end this semester as strongly
as we started…Horned Frogs Lead
the Way!
Always
Striving to be
CULP & Project GO
Every summer cadets are given the opportunity
to travel abroad and become immersed in cultural
awareness training. Cadets apply for this experience
through The Cultural Understanding and Language
Proficiency Program or Project Global Office. This
year the Horned Frog Battalion will be sending nine
cadets!
Trudy Conner
The HFB would like to
give a special THANK YOU
to Trudy Conner of TCU
Financial Aid!
Trudy began working
for TCU in 2006 after she
graduated from Baylor
University.
Her main contributions
to our program are
coordinating with MAJ
Eddie Smith to ensure the
cadets receive their
financial aid. That
includes the room and
board grant and any
other funding needed. If a
cadet is on a three year
scholarship, Trudy
arranges the activity
grant and other academic
scholarships to help the
cadet pay for that fourth
year.
The Horned Frog
Battalion appreciates
everything you do in
helping to support our
program and cadets!
New Offices & Cadet Lounge
4
Last fall the Army
ROTC program
relocated their
offices and cadet
lounge from Winton
Scott to the Rickel
building.
Many cadets and
faculty members
were excited about
this move, especially
Joyce Clay who has
worked in the
Winton Scott offices
for the past 16 years
as the program’s
human resources
technician. “All our
offices are closer
together which
makes it more
convenient,” Clay
says, and “the
amount of space is
about the same, but
all the furnishings are
so new!”
Many also find this
new location
convenient as it’s
within the same
building as TCU
Campus Recreation.
In the old location,
the offices and cadet
lounge were all
connected by a maze
of hallways. At times
it would become
crowded and noisy
with cadets and
cadre coming in and
out.
Now, the office
suites are all at one
end of the hall and
the cadet lounge is at
the other. Cadet
Tyler Press adjusted
to the new lounge
well. “I actually come
here a lot more now
and get a lot more
work done,” he said.
The new space
has made it much
easier for cadets to
come in and study,
hang out, and even
get more work outs
in!

says team captain CDT
left are the playoffs.
The Army ROTC Whiffle Ball team made the
of fun trying,” said CDT Sean Carson.
TCU ROTC: TODAY
AND YESTERDAY
I am a 1969 Viet Nam Era
graduate of TCU and the
Army ROTC program. I
received my commission as a
2 nd Lieutenant on 14 July
1969 at Fort Sill Oklahoma.
My two years of active duty
were spent at Fort Gordon,
GA and Fort Sam Houston,
TX. I recently took a nostalgic
trip down memory lane
while looking at the TCU
ROTC website and reading
some of the Battalion
Bulletins.
I am amazed at how much
more advanced the ROTC
program of today is
compared to the program I
went through from 1965-
1969. Today’s cadets have
many more opportunities for
training and experiences
prior to going on active duty
as a young Lieutenant.
The cadets of my era were
subject to the draft and were
issued the old M-1 rifles from
the armory. The M-16 was
relatively new and was
previously used by the
Special Forces as the AR-15.
My “Summer Camp” (now
called LDAC) was six weeks
long. The TCU Cadets of 1969
attended Summer Camp
during June/July at Fort Sill,
Oklahoma, where we lived in
12-man tents at Camp Eagle
on the Fort Sill Reservation.
Our monthly stipend during
our Junior/Senior years was
$100 per month. Some of
the
sophisticated
communications equipment
we used in training and on
active duty literally stood five
feet tall rather than the hand
held radios, telephones, and
laptops available today.
Needless to say, it was a
whole different world.
My Army experience
helped train me for a 30-year
career as a Department of
the Army Civilian at Fort Sam
Houston, TX. My last 22
years were with
Headquarters,
U.S.
Army Medical Command
where I advised and trained
many NCOs, Junior/Senior
Officers and a few General
Officers on their Labor
Relations responsibilities
when dealing with Army
Civilian employees. Career
Officers will not always be in
troop units and will find
themselves commanding
troops as well as supervising
civilian employees. That
fact/subject was not taught
in the ROTC of my day and I
doubt that it is today.
Cadets, I salute your
initiative and wish you well
in future Army service,
whether it be two years or a
long career. It is an
experience that will serve
you well.
