From Salerno, an excursion leads to<br />
Pompeii, the Roman city both destroyed and<br />
preserved by the eruption <strong>of</strong> Mount Vesuvius<br />
in a.d. 79. No other place so completely<br />
captures the character <strong>of</strong> life in the early<br />
Roman Empire. Tour highlights include the<br />
Forum, the Temples <strong>of</strong> Apollo and Jupiter,<br />
and the Stabian Baths, the best-preserved<br />
and most complete in Pompeii. Alernatively,<br />
visit Ravello, a medieval hill-town with<br />
stellar views, and Amalfi, an 11 th -century<br />

NAXOS BAY<br />
Taormina, a small town on the east coast <strong>of</strong><br />
the island <strong>of</strong> Sicily, <strong>of</strong>fers stunning views out<br />
to sea and <strong>of</strong> the cone <strong>of</strong> Mount Etna, the<br />
largest active volcano in Europe. A Greek<br />
colony was founded here in the 8 th -century<br />
b.c. that prospered here throughout the<br />
Hellenistic and Roman periods. Today, this<br />
area draws visitors to its pristine, warmwatered<br />
beaches. Visit the Greek theater,<br />
which <strong>of</strong>fers dramatic views <strong>of</strong> Etna and<br />
the Sicilian coastline, and amble among<br />
Taormina’s quaint streets and gardens.<br />
Alternatively, enjoy a relaxing afternoon<br />
sunning and swimming on the beautiful<br />

KATAKOLON, Greece<br />
Travel to Olympia, an ancient sanctuary<br />
dedicated to Zeus and one <strong>of</strong> four sites <strong>of</strong><br />
the Panhellenic (Olympic) games. Discover<br />
the ancient ruins, situated in a beautiful<br />
spot north <strong>of</strong> the Alfeios River and Mount<br />
Kronos, including the temples <strong>of</strong> Hera and<br />
Zeus, the Council House, and the Treasuries.<br />
In the Stadium, Young Explorers may run<br />
a race following in the steps <strong>of</strong> ancient<br />

Tuesday, July 28<br />
GYTHEION | MYSTRA or DIROS |<br />
GYTHEION | KOTRONAS BAY<br />
From Gytheion, adults depart for Mystra,<br />
a ruined Byzantine city sheltered in a cleft<br />
Young Explorers sailing aboard Corinthian II<br />
<strong>of</strong> Mount Taygetos. Its ghostly abandoned<br />
buildings and churches contain remarkable<br />
medieval frescoes and fine stonework.<br />
Meanwhile, Young Explorers get to discover<br />
by gondola the haunting stalactite caves <strong>of</strong><br />
Diros. The afternoon is at leisure to explore<br />
the small, charming town <strong>of</strong> Gytheion.<br />
Before dinner, swim <strong>of</strong>f the ship’s stern in<br />

RETHYMNON | KNOSSOS or IM-<br />
BROS GORGE | RETHYMNON, Crete<br />
Arrive in Crete, the island that was home<br />
to the Minoans, Europe’s earliest developed<br />
civilization. From lovely Rethymnon,<br />
one <strong>of</strong> Crete’s quaintest towns, travel to<br />
Knossos to explore the fabled Minoan<br />
Palace, a maze <strong>of</strong> corridors, stairways,<br />
and chambers decorated with frescoes<br />
illuminating life as it was 4,000 years ago.<br />
It is also home to the labyrinth <strong>of</strong> the<br />
legendary Minotaur. Then spend the rest<br />
