Association of Professional Landscape Designers President’s message Happy summer! I hope your design businesses are thriving and that you are enjoying your lives. What a difference a year makes. The world is changing quickly. Compare life today with life last summer: There is more awareness about the fragile health of our planet and the need for a more sustainable approach at all levels of society. So what does that mean to APLD today? As our association grows, we recognize the need for a unified effort for our environment in our industry, too. Are we willing to be accountable for protecting the welfare of all life? We, as landscape designers, are fortunate that our work encompasses so much beauty. We have the ability to be at the forefront of doing this work in a way that encourages the miracle of life. Let us go beyond green washing, or using the word green only as plant material, and take a true sustainable approach in everything we do. We have choices in what we buy, how we live, what actions we take...and, of course, how we design our gardens. Are we making choices that will allow our children to inherent a healthy world? Or are we content to just live for today and just ourselves? Do any of us want history to say that we knew how damaging our current actions were to our health and the health of our planet, and yet did nothing? Or are we prepared to take this challenge? APLD is making the choice to take responsibility for environmental health in every way possible. However, we need every member to make this commitment individually in order for it to have lasting significance. APLD’s commitment to sustainability has the whole board energized. I hope you find inspiration in this special issue of The Designer. FROM THE EDITOR Editor of The Designer and Chair of the Marketing and Communications Committee reports back to APLD members about results of the 2008 APLD membership survey, action taken in response to member input, and future strategies underway to maximize APLD value for members. I n many ways a successful approach to communication mirrors how landscape designers deliver results that meet, if not surpass, clients’ expectations: The first step is to understand the needs of the people who will be using the space. The Designer is one of several ways APLD connects with membership. Each communication vehicle is being repositioned to better serve your needs. To make the quarterly publication even stronger, the first step the APLD marketing and public relations committee took was to learn what APLD members want from their membership. Here is what we learned: The top three reasons members have joined APLD are to grow their business, to network and to grow professionally. In response to your feedback, this issue marks the debut of a redesigned landscape, so to speak, to meet the needs that you have identified as being important to you. To help grow landscape design-related companies, two new regularly occurring sections have been introduced to The Designer: Growing Your Business, with tips on better managing and developing your landscape design company; and, What’s New, a look at new landscape design products, issues, technologies, resources, and legislation. Special inserts for landscape designers to share with prospective and present clients will be included in some issues of The Designer. Copies of these inserts will be available online in the consumer section of apld.org, which is being relaunched in time for the 2009 APLD conference. To help readers grow their network, each issue of The Designer will provide more information about the volunteers who contribute to this publication, so you can get to know these dynamic people and their work. For students, a new regular feature has been added to inspire our next generation of landscape designers: An award-winning landscape designer’s account of how he or she made the transition from student to successful landscape designer. Each of the four issues of The Designer will have a special feature. This issue takes a look at how landscape design can protect the environment and introduces APLD’s new water management guidelines. The next issue, which comes out in the fall, highlights landscape design excellence. Readers will have an opportunity to view awardwinning work from this year’s prestigious APLD landscape design annual awards program. Once planted, a garden will continue to grow. Successful publications are no different. To understand how your needs are evolving and to adapt The Designer to meet these needs, readers are invited to share their comments with us. Space permitting, some of these comments will be printed in a new Letters to the Editor section to share the feedback with other readers. Before encouraging you to pour through this new issue of The Designer, please join me in taking this opportunity to thank the members of the marketing and public relations committee, who have been put in many hours working on The Designer and several other initiatives this year.
