Scott Hokunson and Susan M<strong>or</strong>rison both have articles <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> March/April issue <strong>of</strong> F<strong>in</strong>e Garden<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

While Scott demonstrates his expertise by shar<strong>in</strong>g his “Regional Plant Picks f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> N<strong>or</strong><strong>the</strong>ast,”<br />

Susan tackles a broader geography <strong>in</strong> an article titled “Plant This, Not That.” Susan po<strong>in</strong>ts out that<br />

Scott deserves extra credit, say<strong>in</strong>g “When I sent him an SOS, Scott was gracious enough to provide<br />

suggestions f<strong>or</strong> some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cold wea<strong>the</strong>r plant choices <strong>in</strong> my article. Know<strong>in</strong>g I could count on my<br />

netw<strong>or</strong>k <strong>of</strong> <strong>APLD</strong> friends gave me <strong>the</strong> confidence to tackle a larger writ<strong>in</strong>g assignment.”<br />

Nigel Roll<strong>in</strong>gs has two gardens that are featured <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> book New Y<strong>or</strong>k City Gardens. Nigel’s 2006 <strong>APLD</strong> Landscape<br />

Design Awards entry that received a Silver Award—Rish Residence—will be published <strong>in</strong> March 2011 <strong>in</strong> Better Homes<br />

and Gardens. Great job, Nigel!<br />

Member and PA/DE Chapter board member and founder, Maria Hasenecz, President <strong>of</strong> Livable Landscapes Inc, was<br />

recently <strong>in</strong>terviewed f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> article ‘Creative ways to add a bit <strong>of</strong> pizzazz to <strong>you</strong>r front yard’ <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> January 21 st<br />

Philadelphia Inquirer Home and Design section. The article expl<strong>or</strong>ed various ways to add <strong>in</strong>terest to <strong>the</strong> typical hum<br />

drum foundation plant<strong>in</strong>gs; Hasenecz was <strong>one</strong> <strong>of</strong> a handful <strong>of</strong> experts <strong>in</strong>terviewed. Photographs <strong>of</strong> her private garden<br />

<strong>APLD</strong> member Carrie Dubberley was <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dallas Home<br />

Improvement February issue. Also, Ellen Johnston, <strong>APLD</strong> has <strong>been</strong><br />

featured with a bef<strong>or</strong>e and after pr<strong>of</strong>ile <strong>of</strong> <strong>one</strong> <strong>of</strong> her landscapes. Way to<br />

go, ladies!


Thanks to Kathleen Hass<strong>in</strong>ger <strong>of</strong> Garden Media Group (<strong>APLD</strong>’s PR Firm), an article<br />

about a courtyard project <strong>APLD</strong> member Susan Gw<strong>or</strong>ek, GCLP designed and <strong>in</strong>stalled<br />

was published <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> March issue <strong>of</strong> Atlanta Home Improvement Magaz<strong>in</strong>e. This is<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir Landscape Planner issue. This same project won a Dist<strong>in</strong>ction award f<strong>or</strong> small<br />

landscape <strong>in</strong>stallation from <strong>the</strong> Metro Atlanta Landscape and Turf Association. Susan<br />

says that this is <strong>the</strong> first time her w<strong>or</strong>k has <strong>been</strong> <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> a publication, so she’s<br />

Alma Hecht, <strong>APLD</strong>, lives <strong>in</strong> a great little cottage <strong>in</strong> San Francisco that was just written up on <strong>the</strong> Mo<strong>the</strong>r Earth <strong>News</strong><br />

to answer garden<strong>in</strong>g questions <strong>in</strong> a weekly column <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cleveland Pla<strong>in</strong> Dealer. Sabrena is <strong>the</strong><br />

only pr<strong>of</strong>essional landscape designer on this newly f<strong>or</strong>med panel <strong>of</strong> garden experts known as <strong>the</strong><br />

"Ground Crew.” O<strong>the</strong>r members <strong>in</strong>clude Rob McCartney from <strong>the</strong> Cleveland Metroparks Zoo,<br />

Wendy M. K<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> River Road Designs, and current <strong>APLD</strong> secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tucson Az. district, has a design featured <strong>in</strong><br />

Tucson Lifestyle Home and Garden magaz<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> June issue on pages 38-41.<br />

Vanessa Gardner Nagel, <strong>APLD</strong>, is <strong>the</strong> owner <strong>of</strong> Seasons Garden Design LLC and <strong>the</strong> Education Chair f<strong>or</strong> <strong>APLD</strong>’s board.<br />

Her garden design f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> National College <strong>of</strong> Natural Medic<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> P<strong>or</strong>tland, Oregon was just featured <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Oregonian<br />

on June 24, 2011. The garden is entitled ‘The M<strong>in</strong> Zidell Heal<strong>in</strong>g Garden’ after <strong>the</strong> Zidell family matriarch and <strong>the</strong> don<strong>or</strong>s<br />

who began <strong>the</strong> garden. The garden will serve as an outdo<strong>or</strong> classroom f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> college, an oasis <strong>of</strong> calm f<strong>or</strong> cl<strong>in</strong>ic patients<br />

and local residents, and a botanical garden f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> public. The garden’s design marries <strong>the</strong> two modalities <strong>of</strong> Classical<br />

Ch<strong>in</strong>ese Medic<strong>in</strong>e and Naturopathic Medic<strong>in</strong>e and conta<strong>in</strong>s an <strong>or</strong>ig<strong>in</strong>al labyr<strong>in</strong>th based on <strong>the</strong> Feng Shui mystic knot. At<br />

its center is a pebble mosaic illustrat<strong>in</strong>g a hawth<strong>or</strong>n leaf and berries, an herb common to both heal<strong>in</strong>g modalities. The<br />

garden also conta<strong>in</strong>s a pavilion known as <strong>the</strong> Sokenbicha Tea Pavilion f<strong>or</strong> its don<strong>or</strong> and a sculpture donated by a Ch<strong>in</strong>ese<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>essman. Next year <strong>the</strong> fanciful art nouveau-<strong>in</strong>spired arb<strong>or</strong> will be an addition and later a greenhouse. The garden is<br />

open to <strong>the</strong> public. Read about this wonderful and unique garden here.<br />

The Cleveland Pla<strong>in</strong> Dealer just published an article about <strong>the</strong> Bhushan garden designed by <strong>APLD</strong> President Bobbie<br />

Schwartz, F<strong>APLD</strong>. Check out <strong>the</strong> article titled Xeriscape gardens are low-ma<strong>in</strong>tenance, low-water landscapes.<br />

<strong>APLD</strong> Ge<strong>or</strong>gia-Carol<strong>in</strong>as Chapter President, Susan Gw<strong>or</strong>ek, GCLP, was <strong>in</strong>terviewed this summer f<strong>or</strong> an article <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Atlanta Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Chronicle. Check out <strong>the</strong> article titled How to Choose landscaper with know-how, resources. Susan did a<br />

great job promot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>APLD</strong> and herself, and most <strong>of</strong> her advice ended up be<strong>in</strong>g highlighted <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Top Tips column <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

article.
