What to Watch For<br />

1 st Stage:<br />

;Symptoms show<br />

up 3 to 12<br />

weeks after<br />

having sex.<br />

;A painless,<br />

reddish-brown<br />

sore or sores on<br />

the mouth, sex<br />

organs, breasts<br />

or fingers.<br />

;Sores last 1-5<br />

weeks.<br />

;Sores go away,<br />

but remains<br />

syphilis.<br />

How Do You Get<br />

This STI?<br />

Spread during<br />

vaginal, anal and<br />

oral sex with<br />

someone who<br />

has syphilis.<br />

What Happens if You<br />

Do Not Get Treated?<br />

;You can give<br />

syphilis to your<br />

sexual partner(s).<br />

;A mother with<br />

syphilis can give it<br />

to her baby during<br />

pregnancy or have<br />

a miscarriage.<br />

;Can cause heart<br />

disease, brain<br />

damage, blindness<br />

and death.<br />

VAGINITIS<br />

2 nd Stage:<br />

;Symptoms show<br />

up 1 week to 6<br />

months after<br />

sore heals.<br />

;A rash<br />

anywhere on the<br />

body.<br />

;Flu-like feelings.<br />

;Rash and flulike<br />

feelings go<br />

away, but you<br />

still have<br />

syphilis.<br />

• Some women<br />

have no<br />

symptoms.<br />

• Itching, burning<br />

or pain in the<br />

vagina.<br />

• More discharge<br />

from the vagina<br />

than normal.<br />

• Discharge<br />

smells and/or<br />

looks different.<br />

Can be spread<br />

during vaginal,<br />

anal and oral<br />

sex. Men can<br />

carry vaginitis<br />

infections without<br />

symptoms.<br />

;You can give<br />

vaginitis infections<br />

to your sexual<br />

partner(s).<br />

;Uncomfortable<br />

symptoms will<br />

continue.<br />

;Men can get<br />

infections in the<br />

penis, prostate<br />

gland or urethra.<br />
