32. OF HISTORICAL INTEREST I. ISDALS OF THS PKcXjQRJiD telR X>HD ViPRLD ViaR PLKIOD 1. Blucher Star (Blucherstern) This decoration, a special fom of the Iron Gross, was also founded in 1813. It v/as ^.mrded with the Great Cross of the Iron Cross. This highest of decorations consists of a star of goldon rays, in the center of which reposes the Iron Cross, The year ll l813" or "191V 1 , respectively, is inscribed at tho bottom of tho cross. Since its foundation, it bus boun awarded only twice. Prince 3lticht;r received it first in 1C15 for his victory at 3elle .dlliance. Its second holder is FielcLnarshal von Hindonburg for his accomplishments during the World w^r. It is Yirorn v/ithout a ribbon fastened to the breast. (Plate XVT-125) 2. R>ur Lo Merite This decoration is older than the Iron Cross, having bean instituted in 1740 ôy Frederick the Great. Originally it was eligible not only to soldiers for bravery on tho battlefield, but also to statesmen, scientists, etc. for acconplishmants not connected with vox. In January 1810, King Friedrich mfilhelm decreed that the award of this decoration bo confined to soldiers only for acts of extraordinary bravery on the battlefield. Only officers were eligible to receive it. There are four grades of this decoration: aj Pour L« Merite (lov/ect grade) b) Pour Le -^rit* with Oak Leaves c) G-r'Sat Cross d) Great Cross with Oak Loaves The Pour Le &erite (lowest grade) is worn fc.stonod to th« breast v.lthout a riboon. Tho Pour Le Merit© with Oak Loaves is suspended from the nock by a broad whito-black-white ribbon having very narrow edges. The other two gradeii are also suspended from the neck, and ar© accouipanied by a four-pointod Goldon Star, worn on the breast.
