ARE THERE MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY
FRIENDLY OPTIONS WHEN BUYING
AND USING HOUSEHOLD
CHEMICALS?
• Buy environmentally friendly products.
• Only buy what you need and read the labels
first to avoid highly toxic products.
• Share spare chemicals with neighbours,
friends or community groups
to ensure products are
being used efficiently.
Find safe substitutes. For example
many household kitchen products
such as vinegar, bicarb soda,
lemon juice and eucalyptus oil
can clean just as well as the
more toxic varieties.
WHAT IS HOUSEHOLD
HAZARDOUS WASTE?
Household hazardous waste are chemicals
toxic, corrosive, flammable or reactive properties.
Examples include household cleaning products,
aerosol sprays, automotive supplies
(including oil and petrol), paints
and thinners,
batteries,
photographic
pesticides.
HOW DO I DISPOSE OF
HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE?
If household hazardous waste is not stored or
disposed of properly it can potentially cause harm
not only to people but to the environment.
Please remember the following points:
• Never pour chemicals down the sink,
stormwater drain or onto the ground.
• Do not put hazardous materials out with
your household rubbish.
• Reuse or recycle where possible.
• Take unwanted medicines to your
nearest pharmacy for safe disposal.
• Take unwanted chemicals to your
nearest Household Hazardous Waste
drop off facility or contact the
Environment Protect Agency
(EPA) through Canberra Connect
13 22 81 for advice on disposal.
• Find a contractor in the ‘Waste
Reduction and Disposal’ section
of the yellow pages who specialises
in the collection of hazardous waste in your area.
