Consultation on Orthodox Ecclesiology

A Consultation on Orthodox Ecclesiology was convened at St George’s House, Windsor Castle, from 7th to
9th December 2009, by Dr Geoffrey Rowell, Emeritus Fellow, Keble College, Oxford; Professor Sven-Erik
Brodd, Deputy Vice Rector and Professor of Ecclesiology, Uppsala, and Dr Christine Hall, Research Fellow
in Ecclesiology, Faculty of Theology, Uppsala, in consultation with Dr Rowan Williams, FBA, Archbishop of
Canterbury, Metropolitan Kallistos of Diokleia and other Orthodox scholars.
Acknowledging the growing importance of Orthodox ecclesiology in many parts of the world, the aim of the
Consultation was to explore a wide range of ecclesiological topics that are of current concern and interest
to the Orthodox Church, both in its ecclesial life and in its ecumenical relations and to identify openings for
exchange of scholarship and for future research projects. Impetus for this came initially from the Faculty
of Theology of the University of Uppsala, where a platform to support a number of areas of ecclesiological
research is being put in place, and which contributed generously to the costs of the Consultation.
Participation was organised in association with members of the Editorial Board of the International Journal
for the Study of the Christian Church (IJSCC) and at the joint initiative and invitation of the convenors. Support
funding was generously provided by Taylor and Francis, Publishers of IJSCC; the Olaus Petri Foundation,
Faculty of Theology, Uppsala, and a number of organisations, trusts and individuals in UK and elsewhere.

Outcome of the Consultation
Discussion on the papers presented was complemented by a very useful and enthusiastic exchange
of ideas, in small groups and in a plenary session, pooling knowledge of academic research already
being undertaken in Orthodox Ecclesiology, identifying priority areas, including those which had
arisen from the papers given, and discussing what kind of structures might be put in place to
continue a research programme. Further events and research collaboration are currently being
planned. The full set of papers, edited and amended in the light of discussion at Windsor, will be
published in a forthcoming issue of IJSCC.
