MESSAGE from the CEO Chairman’s Round Table As the YMCA celebrates 150 years of service to the Greater Cleveland community, it is an honor and opportunity of a lifetime to assume the role of president and chief executive officer of such an historic organization.As a newcomer to the Cleveland community, I am continually amazed at the depth of the YCMA of Greater Cleveland’s history and its commitment to the national movement as it is revealed to me in conversations with life-long employees and members, community leaders and staff. A special thank you to the more than 75 individuals and businesses of the Chairman’s Round Table, a group made up of those who donated gifts of $1,000 to the Strong Kids Campaign.Their names will be displayed on YMCA banners in local branches throughout the year. While I have joined the Cleveland YMCA family at a time of great challenge, I also see this as a time of immense opportunity.We successfully opened the Geauga YMCA in February with close to 2,500 new members, reached the 59 percent benchmark ($6 million) for the Lakewood capital campaign and closed out our 2004 Strong Kids Campaign in April by exceeding our goal and raising more than $413,000. These and other accomplishments lay the foundation for future success. Our volunteers and staff have the opportunity to take this foundation and build upon it to continue the legacy of the YMCA in our Cleveland community. I ask all members, volunteers and staff to join me in building the YMCA of the Future. Getting Your Family FIT While Having FUN in the SUN By Mike Merk, Executive Director, Program Development Studies show that only 25 percent of adults and less than 50 percent of youth reach the national recommended levels of physical activity. It’s time for a little spring cleaning of the body! Children are six times more likely to be active if both parents are physically active.You can make a big impact on your children by being a role model for staying active.The upcoming warmer months provide a perfect time to make your family’s health a priority. Make Fitness a Family Affair Make healthy eating habits and regular exercise a part of your family‘s life. Plan family activities that provide the opportunity for exercise and enjoyment such as family walks or bike rides in the neighborhood.You can also explore the outstanding Metro parks in our area.Take turns selecting a different activity each time. Active Vacations Plan your vacations in locations where you and your family will have ample opportunities to be active such as SLIP, SLAP & SLOP THIS SUMMER When you spend time outside with your family this summer, be extra careful to minimize your sun exposure. SLIP on a shirt, SLAP on a hat and SLOP on the sunscreen! walking on the beach, hikes in the mountains or bike rides on the boardwalk. Family Olympics Commemorate the 2004 Summer Olympic Games by having your own backyard fitness festival. Go for the gold with fun athletic challenges utilizing everyday toys such as hulahoops, Frisbees, jump ropes and water balloons. Be creative! You’re It! Bring out the kid in you by joining your children in a game of tag, capture the flag, kick the can, or ghost in the graveyard. Green Thumbs for Everyone Do the yard work together.The entire family can help plant flowers, weed the garden, mow the grass and spread mulch.When you’re finished, volunteer to help an elderly neighbor or two. Don’t Forget the “Play”Ground Take a trip to the neighborhood playground and spend time together mastering the monkey bars, teetering on the teeter-totter or wrestling the rope ladder. And mom or dad, don’t just sit on the benches! Splish, Splash Turn the swimming pool into an aquatic adventure land. Have swimming races, an underwater treasure hunt or a challenging game of Marco Polo. Healthy Kids Day Over 200 kids took part in the 2nd annual Healthy Kids Day Basketball Clinic at Gund Arena on Saturday, April 10. Participants were divided into age groups for scrimmages on the Cavaliers basketball court and clinic activities in the practice courts. The National Basketball Academy organized the skills sessions and activities with support from local YMCA youth basketball coordinators. Cleveland Browns Visit Phoenix School March 10 – Downtown YMCA Phoenix School March 17 – West Side YMCA Phoenix School Several players from the Cleveland Browns Football Team visited students enrolled in the YMCA’s Phoenix program, an alternative to expulsion program for students in grades 6-12. The players shared personal stories and provided motivation for the kids to stay in school and make the right choices. Grand Opening Celebration at the new Geauga YMCA Close to 1,000 Geauga County residents gathered on Feb. 29 for the grand opening celebration of the YMCA of Greater Cleveland’s first new facility in over 30 years, the Geauga YMCA. Activities for the day included facility tours, class demonstrations, a youth basketball clinic sponsored by the National Basketball Academy, a special guest appearance by the Cleveland Indians’ mascot Slider, kids’ games and face painting. The ribbon cutting ceremony was conducted by Matt Dolan with assistance from Keith Tompkins and Vince Slusarz from Kinetico, Paul and Chuck Miller, Carol Dolan Hill and son Chester, Katie Dolan Lloyd and daughter Jen.
