Strong Kids
Campaign
Tops Goal
Thanks to the hard work and
dedication by members,
volunteers and staff, the YMCA of
Greater Cleveland exceeded the
2004 Strong Kids Campaign goal!
The more than $413,000 raised during the campaign will
ensure that children in every community have the
opportunity to take advantage of YMCA programs that
reinforce the values of caring, honesty, respect and
responsibility.
The money raised from the Strong Kids Campaign will
support programs in each of the 14 branches in the Greater
Cleveland area and provide scholarships for those who
might otherwise not be able to afford membership. It is the
policy of the YMCA that no person be denied membership
or program participation by reason of inability to pay fees.
Stephen Buente, senior vice president and group executive
for The Eaton Corporation, spearheaded the associationwide
campaign. Steve encouraged new levels of giving for
the Board of Trustees and led the campaign by securing a
$32,000 grant from The Eaton Corporation Charitable
Foundation to fund two of the YMCA’s programs for teens,
Teen Court and Black Achievers.
Gifts are still being accepted for the Strong Kids Campaign.
Strong Kids Campaign Provides
Opportunity for Change
A GIFT OF
$100
enables children to develop
sportsmanship and character in
seasonal youth sports leagues.
“At age 14, I was without direction. I was considered to be a
juvenile delinquent with a low grade point average, until I stepped
foot into the Downtown YMCA. Sam Woodfolk, the YMCA Youth
Sports Director, assigned me to volunteer as a youth instructor
working with children. To me, working as a youth instructor is one
way to keep our youth off the streets and out of trouble. Setting
examples and being a role model helps to encourage children to be
their best. I would like to give a special thanks to Sam Woodfolk
and my co-workers, because it is with their support that I can proudly
say I am an honor roll student at East Technical High School and will
be attending college this summer. With the help and support of the
YMCA, my life has changed – I found a new direction.”
Christopher Shanks
A GIFT OF
$250
provides a child with a full week of
outdoor education at the YMCA’s
residence camp.
In 2003, Centerville Mills YMCA Camp awarded $25,000 in
scholarship to more than 70 families whose kids would have
otherwise missed out on the experience. Thanks to these scholarships,
one set of grandparents was able to send their granddaughter,
Jordan, to camp this past summer despite financial hardships.
Jordan, who suffers from a severe learning disability, found great
success in the fun, social setting.
A GIFT OF
$500
assists a single parent by providing
six weeks of YMCA Child Care.
When their father became terminally ill with lung cancer, two young
children were in desperate need of before- and after-school child care.
With the children’s mother also being ill, the YMCA of Greater
Cleveland was able to step in and provide the essential child care
thanks to the scholarship finances raised through the Strong Kids
Campaign.
In addition, because of scholarship assistance, a single mother of
two boys can now keep her job and medical benefits with the
reassurance that her children are properly cared for in the YMCA
Child Care program. Due to recent budget cuts in subsidized child
care funding, she was faced with the decision to either quit her job
or leave her boys, one of whom suffers from severe asthma, at home
alone with no child care. The YMCA of Greater Cleveland was able
to provide her with scholarship assistance so that she did not have
MESSAGE
from the
CEO
Chairman’s
Round Table
As the YMCA celebrates 150 years of service to the Greater
Cleveland community, it is an honor and opportunity of a
lifetime to assume the role of president and chief
executive officer of such an historic organization. As a
newcomer to the Cleveland community, I am continually
amazed at the depth of the YCMA of Greater Cleveland’s
history and its commitment to the national movement as it
is revealed to me in conversations with life-long employees
and members, community leaders and staff.
A special thank you
to the more than 75 individuals and businesses
of the Chairman’s Round Table, a group made
up of those who donated gifts of $1,000 to the
Strong Kids Campaign.Their names will be
displayed on YMCA banners in local branches
throughout the year.
While I have joined the Cleveland YMCA family at a time of
great challenge, I also see this as a time of immense
opportunity. We successfully opened the Geauga YMCA in
February with close to 2,500 new members, reached the
59 percent benchmark ($6 million) for the Lakewood
capital campaign and closed out our 2004 Strong Kids
Campaign in April by exceeding our goal and raising more
than $413,000.
These and other accomplishments lay the foundation for
future success. Our volunteers and staff have the
opportunity to take this foundation and build upon it to
continue the legacy of the YMCA in our Cleveland
community.
I ask all members, volunteers and
staff to join me in building the
YMCA of the Future.
Scholarship Testimonial
“
I have been a member at the Downtown YMCA through the
scholarship-funding program for over 10 years. The program
has allowed me to achieve self-esteem and keep my physical
ailments to a minimum by losing 80 pounds. My son, Michael,
has been attending the YMCA 3-4 days a week for two years
and he’s lost 70 pounds. We would not have been able
”
to
accomplish these goals and continue to reach for higher
be active if both parents are physically
active. You can make a big impact on
your children by being a role model
for staying active.The upcoming
warmer months provide a perfect time
to make your family’s health a priority.
THE
EXPERT
Summer Water Safety
By Katie Laurich, Euclid Family YMCA Program Director
Y
Arts
Day
As the temperature outside continues
to climb and the school year winds
to a close, kids and families are
gearing up for a summer of fun in the
great outdoors.That means hundreds
of families will head to local
community pools, nearby beaches or
backyard pools.
The U.S. National Safety Council
reports that drowning is the third
leading cause of death among
children under 5 years of age and the
second leading cause of death among
children ages 5-14.
The YMCA of Greater Cleveland
recommends several important
precautionary measures to ensure
safety around water:
• Always supervise children. Never
leave a child near the water alone for
any reason. Children can
drown in less than three
inches of water.
• Establish pool rules
and enforce them.
• Do not rely on
inflatable toys and
armbands.They have been
known to have fast leaks and can
deflate unexpectedly.
• Swim or supervise swimming only
when sober and not on any medication
that may cause drowsiness.
• Teach children never to go into any
pool without adult supervision, even
at the homes of friends and relatives.
• Be prepared. Have close by a first
aid kit and a long pole or reaching
line. Keep emergency numbers handy
and get trained in CPR and/or first aid.
• Make sure all divers use caution.
Never dive in if you can’t see the
bottom or if the water depth is too
shallow.
• Never swim when lightening or
thunder is present, even at an indoor
facility. Pools and other large bodies
of water attract lightening even when
enclosed.
• Make sure all pools in which your
child swims are supervised by adults
who know the rules, can swim and
are prepared to handle emergencies.
• Enroll your child in a swim lessons
program so that he or she will know
the basics when it comes to being
safe in and around the water.
Teaching Safety & Values
By Katie Laurich, Euclid Family YMCA Program Director
With the warmer weather
approaching, it’s important that we
take extra precaution to prepare our
children for the fun days at the beach
and pool.
The YMCA of Greater Cleveland’s Y
Swim Lessons is a great way to teach
your children basic swimming and
rescue skills, while learning the
lifelong benefits of swimming.The
YMCA strives to go beyond the basic
swim lesson to focus on stroke
development, personal safety,
personal growth and water games.
The programs are taught in a caring,
student-centered environment with
low student-to-teacher ratios.
Lesson plans are designed around
each child’s age and developmental
abilities, with safety being the highest
priority. Because children reach
milestones quickly, they build selfconfidence
and stay interested in
swimming for longer time periods.
Y Swim Lessons also promote family
togetherness through Family
Huddles, handouts designed to be
completed by the swim lesson
participant and his/her parent.The
skills children learn in class are
reinforced through these Family
Huddle activities and other parent
education materials.
Unique to the YMCA, the programs
also stress character values of caring,
honesty, respect and responsibility
into every lesson.Through modeling
and questioning, children are taught
how to take these
values beyond the
pool and into their
everyday lives.
In the Cleveland
area, boating safety
has become an
important part of Y
Swim Lessons as
more people are
heading out to Lake
Erie each summer.
The program strives
to teach the
community the necessary boating
safety knowledge in conjunction with
swimming.
The YMCA of Greater Cleveland
provides a safe, fun and organized
environment where infants, children
and adults can learn to swim year
round.Visit your local branch for
more information.
The YMCA first began teaching
