150 Words or Fewer - William Groot
“He shoots, he scores!” Famous words from a Canadian icon, Foster Hewitt, on Hockey Night in Canada. Last Saturday, the
TD Students team soundly defeated the TD Alumni squad 7 to 0, at another one of TD’s 50th Anniversary events: Hockey
Night in Woodbridge.
Why a hockey game?
As Christians, we are called, challenged even, to use our whole beings in service to and worship of our Creator. That
includes physical activities. Our culture reveres sports to the point of excess. Yet sports – played the right way – allow
students opportunities to express themselves and honour God (like they do in music, drama, shop, and academics). In addition,
students learn about collaboration and interdependence as part of a team. Finally, it’s fun.
And, that’s why there was a hockey game.
P.S. In Edsby, some teachers have turned off the feature that displays students’ percentage grades. However, all assignments
are and will continue to be available.
50th Anniversary Events: Don’t miss out!
Spring Concert: April 30 Presentations Day and Former Teachers’ Lunch: May 31
Open House and Evening Gala: June 1 Alumni Plays, The Farmer Show and Drawer Boy: June 20 to 22
Praise & Petition
- A. Vanderkooy/M. Laswick
Rachael Weening along with chaperones Miraya Groot, Peter Groot, Erica Racanelli, Brad Kooy, William VandeWier and
Nick Weening are leaving for the Dominican Republic tomorrow, February 21. Marg Laswick and Joel Westerhof will be
leaving for Belize with 13 students on March 4. We wish for them a strong sense of God’s presence and leading as they
live, learn and work together within a variety of communities.
Grade 10 Parent Night
Course selections, college, university, apprenticeship, scholarships.. the journey towards post-secondary education can
be complicated, with information overload and no clear answers in terms of what to do next. Come to our annual Grade 10
Parent /Student Night on February 21 at 7:00 pm and learn how you, as a parent, can supplement what your child
is learning in their careers course and support their search for post-secondary options. There will be an overview of
course selections for Grade 11 and 12. Grade 10 students are strongly encouraged to attend.
Notes from the Board
- Ruth Ann Schuringa
As a new board member, I am always amazed at the variety of topics discussed at each monthly board meeting. Our February
meeting highlighted the good financial situation at TD right now, with positive projections for new families in September
2013 as well. The school is continuously delving into project-based learning and has just given select Gr. 10 & 11 students
a tablet for their school work, as a pilot project. These are all good signs of a thriving educational place!
At this time of year the Contract Committee is busy with staff contract negotiations, which require some longer discussions
that are always rewarding. Praise God for good board-staff relationships.
The Board is tackling the tough issue surrounding CEAF and the CRA this month. An OACS-led Town Hall meeting for parents
was held on Saturday, Feb. 16. There are still more questions than answers but pertinent information will be forwarded
to parents as needed. Please pray for wisdom in this situation.
We continue to be thankful for God’s faithfulness in providing 50 years of Christ-centered education at TD. Those who
attended the Alumni-Student hockey game on Saturday were entertained (although the score was a bit lop-sided.) Next
big anniversary event: Spring Concert on Tuesday, April 30 @ the Richmond Hill Performing Arts Center, featuring performances
by present TD students and alumni. You won’t want to miss it!
Music News
- K. Hayward
blouses, sweaters). Black dress shoes are also needed, ie. no running shoes.
The groups will return by 4:00 p.m.
Athletics
- M. Heinbuch
Our winter season is wrapping up. The Junior and Senior Boys Basketball team’s YRAA season came to an end last
week, on Thursday, as both teams suffered upset losses in the quarter finals of the YRAA play-offs. Special thanks to Mr.
Sjaarda and Mr. Bentum for coaching the junior and senior teams, respectively. The juniors play their final tournament
on Friday and Saturday in Hamilton.
The Girls Junior Tier 2 Volleyball team finished first in their division this year - earning a “bye” into yesterday’s YRAA
play-off tournament, hosted at TDCH. At the tournament the girls played very well and won their semi-final match. The
team now plays for the YRAA Tier 2 Championship on Friday, at E.S.C. Renaissance sy 3:30 p.m.
The Girls Junior Tier 1 Volleyball team also had their YRAA play-off tournament yesterday at Sacred Heart CHS. The
girls struggled and failed to qualify for the semi-final game. Special thanks to Coach Weening for her work this season.
The Senior Girls Volleyball play their YRAA play-off tournament today, at St. Jean de Brebeuf. Depending on how the
girls do, they could qualify for the YRAA Championship game, on Friday, February 22, at E.S.C. Renaissance. Game
time is at 8:00pm and there is an admittance fee. Once the YRAA play-offs are complete for the senior team, they will
begin final preparations for the 2013 OFSAA Championship, in Lakefield, ON., from March 4-6. As the YRAA representative
for Single A schools, TDCH will be completing against schools from all over the province. We wish Coach Dengerink
and the team all the best!
Badminton team tryouts have already begun. Dan Allard, a community volunteer for over ten years, is once again returning
to assist Mr. Godber and Mrs Dengerink with this year’s Junior and Senior teams. They hope to have the teams
chosen in the next two weeks. The season starts right after March Break.
Track and Field sign-ups began this week. Last year was our first appearance at OCSSAA Track & Field in over a decade.
We placed third at last year’s tournament - success we hope to build on this year. There are over 12 events that
students can sign-up for, from sprinting and jogging to throwing and jumping. Practices will start after March Break with
the OCSSAA Track & Field meet in early May. Mr. Heinbuch and Mr. Sjaarda will be coaching the team again. If there
are any parents with experience or expertise in track or field events, please email athletics@tdchristian.ca.
Girls Soccer had its first tryout last week. The next tryout will be after March Break. There is a solid group of players
returning from last year’s team, but with twelve players graduating, there are some large holes to fill. After the first tryout
last week, Coach Heinbuch is pleased with the new soccer talent in grades nine and ten.
Boys Soccer tryouts will begin after March Break. Coach Zondervan is excited to be back for a second year.
Senior Ultimate Frisbee tryouts wrapped-up this week. Team practices will begin after March Break. Junior Ultimate Frisbee
tryouts will begin after March Break. Coach Kooy is returning to help coach again this year. He and Coach Weening
will be co-coaching this year’s Junior and Senior teams, as Ms Weening is away in the Dominican Republic until April 18.
