FAST logo evolves as team grows
After 10 great years as a team, the
coaches and board of directors
decided the FAST logo needed to
catch up with the team’s expansion.
As the team continues to emerge on
the regional and national stage, the
team’s leadership felt it was important
to differentiate FAST from several
other clubs around the country that
also use the acronym “FAST.”
FAST places 2 nd at Division I Championship
by Jim Halliburton
Congratulations to the 94 FAST
Division I swimmers on another great
championship meet performance. CSP
won a very close meet with FAST
placing second, Rockwood third and
Parkway fourth.
FAST won 31 individual events
compared to Rockwood with13,
Parkway with 7 and CSP with 3.
FAST won a total of 8 relays
compared to Rockwood with 9,
Parkway with 4 and CSP with 1.
As you can see from the results, CSP
was able to win the meet with their
depth, as they had 115 swimmers
making Division I cuts compared to
FAST having 94 swimmers and
Rockwood 75.
With the inclusion of the Gateway
Arch, the new logo unmistakably
links the team to the St. Louis
region. The logo also has a clean
appearance, making it easy to display
on swim caps and team clothing.
The logo made its first appearance
on the t-shirts worn by Division I
swimmers last weekend, and there
will be an apparel order shortly for
all team members.
Senior and Senior Prep update
by Maggie Kroemer
Columbia Last Chance Meet
A handful of swimmers from the Senior and Senior Prep groups traveled to the
University of Missouri to race at the Tiger Invite Last Chance Meet. This meet
served as a final tune-up before the championship portion of the season. These
swimmers took advantage of swimming in one of the best pools in the country and
had several great swims.
The Mizzou Aquatic Center was host
to the Columbia Last Chance Meet.
Jake Gauvain had an outstanding meet, swimming best times in all of his races and
obtaining two new Division 1 cuts in the 200 free and 200 back. Other swimmers
who had new BB times were Jillian Bommarito (50free), Elena Coleman (400 IM,
500 free) and Mark Franz (200 free, 200 breast, 100 breast). Cole Giandinoto
acheived a new A time in the 200 free, while Jack Wessell made a new AAA time in
the 200 back.

Division II Meet
Many Senior and Senior Prep swimmers
had an outstanding meet at the Division
II meet. Some swimmers used this meet
as an opportunity to acquire additional
Division I cuts, while others already had
their cuts and used this meet as a tune-up
before Division I.
There were 20 new Division I cuts from
swimmers in these groups. Those who
made new cuts were Connor Flack (100
High School Prep update
by Cooper Lovera
“Sydney Allen and
MJ Topp had stand-out
swims for the High
School Prep group.”
Coach Lovera
February started with the Division II meet and ended with the Division I
championship. Sydney Allen was at both representing High School Prep, and had
best times at both. She started the Division II meet with a first-time swim in the
200 IM, and achieved a BB time to begin the meet on the right foot! She went on
to drop 2 seconds in her 100 free and 5 seconds in her 200 breast during prelims,
qualifying for finals in the 200 breast in the process. Later that evening in finals,
she cut another 3 seconds in the 200 breast (over 8 seconds dropped total) and a
little over a half second more in the 100 free. Later on at Division I, Sydney swam
the 200 breast again as well as the 50 free. She was right at her time from Division
II in the 200 breast, and finished off by dropping over a half second in the 50 free,
getting under 29 seconds for the first time. Great job overall, Sydney! Looking
forward, March will start off immediately with the Senior Championship meet, at
which MJ Topp will be hoping to improve upon his great first swims from our
home meet at the beginning of the year. MJ has been training very hard, and his
hopes are high for more best times at his second meet with FAST. Best of luck to
MJ, and keep swimming FAST!!
National and National Prep face a month of
championship meets
by Ian Cross
Congratulations to Nick Alexander
for winning the outstanding
swimmer award at Division I
Championships. Alexander is the
first Ozark swimmer to win the MVP
award back-to-back at the Ozark
Long Course Championship and at
the Division I Championship.
The end of February started what is to
be a four-week gauntlet of swimming
known as the short- course
championship season for the National
and National Prep Groups. Division I
Champs, Senior Champs, Sectionals
and Junior Nationals are all conducted
on consecutive weekends from Feb.
22 until the conclusion on March 16.
Starting it off last weekend was
Division 1 Champs, where eight
members of the two groups competed
and helped our team to a tough and
well-deserved second-place finish.
Michael Franz, Evie Pfeifer, Shelby
Duessel, TJ Halliburton, Amanda
Dreyer, Libby Dorsey, Nick
Alexander and Austin Mayer all
competed and swam exceptionally
well. For Dorsey, Franz, Dreyer and
Halliburton, it was their shave and
taper meet. Mayer won four
individual events, including a blazing
1:46.6 200 free while not being rested
yet. Shelby Duessel narrowly missed
her junior national cut in the 50 free,
and Evie Pfeifer won two individual
events as she is gearing up for
Sectionals and Junior Nationals.
As the championship season moves
forward to the second week of
competition, it is important that all of
the swimmers keep a loose and
relaxed attitude at practice every day,
as well as at the meets. They are all
showing signs of having a ton of
energy, and Jim and I are very happy
with the speed and intensity that we
are training with right now. The
swimmers must understand that this
should be the most enjoyable time of
the season. They have put in a lot of

FAST-Dispatch
National & National Prep continued
time, effort, sweat and undoubtedly
some tears, into this short course
season. They had to deal with my
constant yelling and intensity all
winter long. The technical issues that
we worked on for the last six months
now give way to race strategy, tempo
and percentage of effort. I am at my
most relaxed on deck this time of year
because I know how well we are going
to swim, and so should all of the
athletes. The hard work is done, and
now it is time to reward ourselves by
getting up and racing our best. We still
need to get plenty of rest and keep the
intensity up in workout, but we are
geared up to swim very well. The
swimmers are rallying behind each
other, and getting very close as a team.
If that continues, we will race great, as
one unbreakable unit. To paraphrase
the late, great Al Davis, “Just Swim
Baby.”
FAST-Caruthersville
by Spence Royer
FAST Caruthersville is entering its sixth week of existence and continues to show growth and expansion.
Coach Royer has had a consistent stream of new inquiries and tryouts each week and is excited about the
future prospects for the squad. During the first five weeks, the emphasis has been on the four competitive
strokes and starts, turns and touches. Considering that many of the Caruthersville swimmers are brand new
to the sport, their progression has been strong.
The Caruthersville squad is excited about the upcoming Intra Squad meet on March 16. An Intra Squad
meet is the perfect introduction for athletes new to the sport. Recently, the Caruthersville squad had a suitand
fin-fitting night and the order from B&B Sports will be coming in this week. The pool is now filled with
yellow and green caps and the FAST presence is on display via car decals etc.
The City of Caruthersville continues to be a strong supporter of the FAST team. Recently, the backstroke
flags have been replaced with yellow and green pennants. In addition, two pool lights that needed to be
repaired have been received and will be installed soon. Also, the Colorado timing system has been
refurbished and will be shipped back to the pool soon. The next step with the timing system will be for a
technician to troubleshoot all of the components. Once this is accomplished, FAST will be ready to host
meets in the Boot heel.
Coach Royer continues to stay busy with building the FAST program and also developing lifeguard, WSI,
and swim lesson operations for the city. According to Coach Royer, the swim lesson operation will be
critical for future growth of the swim team. The entire lifeguard staff in Caruthersville will be WSI certified
by March 24 with the kick-off of swim lessons this spring.

Age Group update
by Derek Shipp
Age Group Prep
Winter finally found us in February, but that didn’t
cool down the progress of Age Group Prep in the
pool. We have been continuing to work on freestyle
and backstroke flip turns each day in preparation for
our next meet performances. The work paid off early
in the month at the Columbia meet on Super Bowl
Sunday. Kaitlyn Crancer and Nicholas Wingerter each
competed in the 100 backstroke and did three
backstroke flipturns!
The following weekend, we had about 20 swimmers
in the Division II Meet that was held at two locations.
This was a prelim/final meet, so we recommended
that most of our swimmers in Age Group Prep set
their sights on the 8 & Under Championship or our
own Intrasquad meet in March. That said, we did
have several swimmers make it to finals at the
Division II meet – Kaitlyn Crancer, Reagan Martin,
Delaney O’Neill, Doug Portner, Kayla Weik and
Nicholas Wingerter! Delaney also dropped 10
seconds in her 100 backstroke to qualify for the
Division I Championships! So, while the Division II
meet was not a focus meet for much of our group, we
did see a lot of good things. Unfortunately, we also
continued to have disqualifications that took away
some really big time drops. Strokes have largely
looked much better, but mistakes like pushing off on
our stomach on backstroke and one-handed touches
in fly and breast should not be happening at this point
in the season.
We will continue to add work on starts and turns to
each practice in preparation for the 8 & Under
Championship and our Intrasquad meet on March 13,
where we should see the best performances of the
year!
Age Group 1
After a fairly quiet month in
January, February was packed with
meets for Age Group 1 and great
performances, too. Practice
attendance has been up for many
of our swimmers, either because of
the new year or trying to get ready
for our big meets (or both). In any
case, practices have been a lot of
fun. We’ve continued to do turn
work at least a couple times per
week and re-emphasized our
streamlines off the wall. It is safe to
say that February was a great
month for Age Group 1.
We had a few swimmers go to the
meet in Columbia the first week of
February. Swimmers could only
swim three events each day, so it
was mostly a meet to stay sharp
heading into Championships, but
Lexi Martin and Joe Watson picked
up their first “BB” times and
Sophia McLeod picked up two
more, so it was a good way to start
the month.
March Trivia Question
What is the closest swim
race in Olympic history that
did not end up in a tie?

FAST-Dispatch
The Division II meet was the next weekend, and most of the group competed in the prelim/final meet. The
goal of the meet is to make finals and get new BB times. Mission accomplished! We had 20 Age Group 1
swimmers compete in finals and achieve the following new BB times: Lauren Bailey – 50 free, 50 fly, 100 IM;
Emily Carlson – 50 free, 50 back, 100 breast, 100 IM; Kylie Chitwood – 50 breast; Molly Dorsey – 200 free,
50 back, 100 back, 200 IM; Grace Dutch – 100 free, 200 free, 100 fly; Isabelle Kohler – 100 free, 200 free, 50
fly, 100 IM; Lexi Martin – 100 breast; Sophia McLeod – 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 100 back, 100 breast, 100
fly; Aspen Shipp – 50 back, 100 back; Seth Steinbrueck – 50 fly; Michael Streb – 200 free, 100 back, 100 fly;
Jack Villa – 100 breast, 100 IM; Joe Watson – 50 back, 50 fly, 200 IM.
Two weeks later, we had the Division I Championships at the St. Peters RecPlex. If you just qualified for the
meet at Division II, the challenge was to do better than you did two weeks before. If you came in with cuts
from earlier in the season, the challenge was to score points for this team championship. We did a pretty
good job on both accounts. Lauren Bailey, Molly Dorsey, Seth Steinbrueck, Michael Streb and Joe Watson
were all able to improve on their qualifying performances from Division II. In addition, we saw Caleb Bahr,
Michael Streb, Jack Villa, Madigan White and Brooke Zimmerman competing in finals! Congratulations to
Caleb Bahr for his part in two first-place relays for the 10 & Under boys and Brooke Zimmerman for her 7 th
place finish in the 100 IM and a new AA time!
Now that the short -ourse meets are done for a while. We had some fun days and have begun to re-tool our
strokes for long-course swimming. Remember to sign up for long-course meets early as many of them fill up
quickly.
Age Group 2
After long months of hard work, the season seems to wrap up very quickly and then it’s over. That is what
the month of February was. The month is short enough on its own, but for Age Group 2, it seemed like one
long meet and then it was time to get ready for long course.
We started our path to the Championships with the meet in Columbia. This meet was mainly a meet to stay
sharp for Division I if you were fully qualified for that meet. We had a few good swims and had time to fix
things before Championships. Everyone was right on their best times or a little under, but it gave us a good
idea where we were heading into the next three weeks.
Two of the next three weeks, the group was split based on whether we were getting ready for Division I or
Division II. The group did a good job of focusing on getting ready for their own meet and not worrying
about what the other group was doing. By splitting our focus, we were able to compete very well at both the
Division II and Division I meets.
Division II – Awesome results! The group swam 86% best times, but with some swimmers getting their best
time twice in the same event by swimming in prelims and finals, it seemed like even more than that.
Speaking of finals, they were packed with AG2 swimmers. It was not unusual to see five of our 11-12 boys
in the same heat of finals. Congratulations to Henry Volkmann for winning the 100 Breast and 100 free with
new A times and to Jake Sigman for winning high point for the 11-12 boys age group.

Age Group 3
While February is still early in the new year, it is near the end of the short-course season. It is time for a
long (swim) year of practice to culminate in our biggest age group meet of the year – Division I
Championships. During the month of February, we continued to work on kicking, improve our
streamlines and touch up turns and starts, but the majority of the preparation was done during the
previous months. A few of our swimmers also prepared for Championships by attending the Tiger
Invitational in Columbia. This was a good tune-up meet about three weeks out from Champs. It gave us a
good look at what we needed to focus on during the last weeks of the season. Most people were right on
their best times, but Maddie Pearl did jump up and get her first sectional cut in the 100 backstroke
(1:00.83) and Morgan Ribaudo competed for the first time in the 13-14 age group.
The following week, we also had swimmers in the Division II meet. As now about half of the group is 13
& Over, we had a combination of swimmers competing a full-schedule and some picking up additional
events for the Division I Champs. Results were largely positive with Tyler Lewis achieving five new BB
times and AJ Kohler dropping from a B to an A in the 100 IM in one day! The results at Division II
showed we should be ready to do great things at the Division I Champs.
Division I was definitely a great meet for Age Group 3. While we have had some age ups since our
November Champs, both Maddie Pearl and Jack Wever were able to score in multiple events in the 13-14
age group. And while Joe Jellinek missed a month with a broken arm, he came back and swam with grit
and got four new A times! However, the swimmer of the meet had to be Karisa Franz, who not only won
all seven of her individual events, but achieved six new AAAA times in the process. Here is a complete list
of new time standards for the group: Karisa Franz – AAAA – 100 free, 200 free, 100 back, 100 breast,
100 fly, 200 IM; Ryan Groszek – A – 100 back, 200 IM; Joe Jellinek – A – 50 free, 100 breast, 50 fly, 100
IM; AJ Kohler – A – 200 IM; Maddie Pearl – AAA and Sectional Cut – 200 backstroke; Haley Rey – AA
– 50 back, 200 IM; Jack Wever – A – 200 back, 200 breast, 400 IM, AA – 100 back.
Now that champs are over, we will be making some changes to the group, but will work on stroke
technique and kicking to get ready for long-course season. We should have a good number of swimmers
at Zones in August!
The Age Group 3 Swimmer of the Meet for the
Division I Championship is Karisa Franz. Franz
won all seven of her individual events and
achieved six new AAAA times in the process.

Trivia Answer for March
Sweden's Gunnar Larsson beat USA's Tim McKee in the 400 free by 2/1,000th of a second.
Note: Until 1960, people measured swimming times to the 10th of a second. They used to have
3 timers and use the middle time of the 3, or average the 3 times. But there were a lot of ties,
and a lot of controversy over bad timing or unfair timing. Between 1961 and 1972, swimming
was timed by an electric timing system to the 1,000 th or 10,000 th of a second. In 1972, at the
NCAA, a swimmer got beat in the 400 IM by 3/10,000 th of a second, and then, in the 1972
Olympics, a swimmer won the silver medal by 2/1,000 th of a second. Swimming thought that
this was unfair for a swimmer to lose a race by so little, so for the last 30 years, swimming
changed to always measured times to the 100 th of a second.
Congratulations to Nick Alexander for winning the outstanding swimmer award at the Division I
Championships. Nick is the first Ozark swimmer to win the MVP award back to back at the Ozark Long
course champs and at the Division I Championship.
