of Kaunertal 

Regardless if you prefer to spend your holiday doing winter sports, 

visiting cultural sites or simply enjoying the marvelous surroundings, 

Kaunertal valley is the right place to come. This brochure aims to 

inspire you to take advantage of our region’s countless activities, 

as well as to inform you of upcoming events arranged by 

the tourism office, Nature Park Kaunergrat and our 

other partners. 

We wish you pleasant and adventurous 

days in Kaunertal valley. 

Here the winter shows its sunny side … Experience a varied winter 

vacation in one of Tyrol‘s most impressive ski regions. Kauns, Kaunerberg 

and Kaunertal are members of the Naturpark Kaunergrat association. 

KAUNERTAL (1.287 m) 

The six hamlets Nufels, Platz, Vergötschen, Unterhäuser, 

Feichten and Grasse add up to one of the most beautiful 

valley villages in Tyrol – Kaunertal. Its namesake, the 

glacier area at the foot of Weißseespitze, guarantees 

enough snow for all kinds of winter sports from fall to 

late spring. Aside from the fascinating skiing and snowboarding 

opportunities, we offer many other attractive 

winter activities. 

KAUNS (1.050 m) 

The resort village Kauns has an idyllic location above the 

Kauner and Inn valleys. The atmosphere is calm, relaxing 

and has plenty of country charm. With many major ski 

resorts nearby, the opportunities for a varied winter 

vacation are endless. Also, take the opportunity to 

explore the numerous hiking trails leading you through 

enchanted winter landscapes. 

FENDELS (1.352 m) 

Fendels is located 1 356 m above sea level and has 

fantastic panoramic views. Here you can enjoy traditional 

winter atmosphere high above every-day bustle. During 

the winter, Fendels is a family-oriented skiers’ paradise 

with 16 piste kilometer (with easy and more difficult 

slopes) and a 4,5 kilometer long sledding slope. Night 

Skiing and Night Sledding (every Thursday) are thrills you 

should not miss.

KAUNERBERG (1.270 – 1.600 m) 

The village of Kaunerberg is a scattered settlement 

located at the mouth of the sunny Kaunertal valley. 

Wonderful hiking trails invite you to experience just how 

lovely nature can present itself during the winter. Crosscountry 

skiers need only to take a few steps from the 

“Gachen Blick” onto the famous “Hubertus” run. Downhill 

skiers have major ski resorts just a few kilometers away.

The House in Nature Park Kaunergrat opened its 

doors in 2007. It is an additional symbol for our 

collected vision: to preserve the amazing 

environment around Kaunergrat the best we can for 

coming generations. The restaurant has a sunny 

rooftop patio with a breathtaking view, as well 

as great food. A visit here is the perfect 

conclusion to an unforgettable 

experience at the Nature 

Park Kaunergrat. 

Locals and guests alike can enjoy the unique winter landscape in Nature 

Park Kaunergrat. Together with mountain guides, biologists, hunters 

and farmers we set out to discover the incomparable magic of winter 

in the Alps. Regardless of age or interests, the winter program has 

something for everyone! 

The Nature Park House Kaunergrat at the ”Gacher Blick“ is the gateway between 

the Kaunertal, Pitztal and Inntal valleys, and also the service center for 

visitors interested in nature and culture of our region. 

Use the Nature Park House as a starting point to gather special information 

about the region or gain some tips or helpful suggestions for other activities 

for your holiday.

Winter program 2011/12 

Winter adventures for junior scouts 

Attention kids! Want to find out what a real ranger does and explore his or her adventurous winter chores at 

the Kaunergrat nature park? We follow the professional ranger for an afternoon, tracking wild animals to 

learn more about their lives, snowshoeing through the forest and much more. Experience the exciting Alpine 

winter forest safely under the ranger’s watchful eyes. 

Schedule and fees: On request, from 5 participants (min. 6 yrs) 

Time: approx. 3 h 

Meeting point: Nature Park House Kaunergrat at Gachenblick 

winter hiking trail – Harber Wiesen 

The Nature Park House is the ideal starting point for exploring the surroundings of Piller Sattel by foot. A 

well kept trail takes you directly to the Harber Wiesen (meadows), where you can enjoy the view of the 

snow-capped Aifnerspitze peak. 

Start and goal: at the Nature Park House, easy hike 

Length: approx. 3 km 

The complete Nature Park Kaunergrat winter program is 

available at the Tourism Offices. 

wildlife in the winter forest … Animal feeding 

Experience close up how the ranger cares for the animals during winter. We hike with him to Piller Moor, 

help him fill the feeding stations and learn about the shy residents of the Alpine forest.

discover the nature park by snowshoeing 

Our skilled and knowledgeable mountaineering guides take you through varied winter terrain, showing off 

the spectacular beauty of this region. Along the way you learn more about the fascinating survival and adaptation 

strategies of local plants and animals. Great fun for the whole family and an excellent opportunity 

to experience Alpine nature up close.

Through the Pillerwald by a traditional sledge 

In former times farmers used these sledges to bring the hay down to the valley. Nowadays you use it for a 

winterfun activity. After going up by a tractor, we sled down to the valley with the old traditional sledge! 

Fun ist guaranteed.

The Advent fair at the Nature Park House is genuine, plain and cozy. The winter-romantic ambiance 

sets the mood as you shop for handmade crafts and specialties from the Nature Park region. 

Spiritual Christmas music from 2 to 5 p.m.

are attractive destinations for everyone who likes to ski and 

snowboard. Not far away from Kaunertal you will find further more 

attractive skiing areas with alltogether more than 550 km slopes.

The 8-seat gondola lift at Kaunertal Glacier takes 

you up to 3108-m altitude in less than five minutes. 

The lift starts at the parking lot at the end of 

the Glacier Road at 2750-m altitude. 

Already during the ride up you can enjoy the 

majestic scenery of the Kaunertal glacier world 

and of the Weißseespitze (3518 m). After arriving 

at the summit station you immediately see the 

glorious panoramic “three-country” view. Actually, you don’t just see the three 

countries, you are also right on the border between Austria and Italy. The Ortler 

peak (3905 m) on the Italian side is easy recognizable, as well as the Bernina ridge 

with the Piz Bernina (4069 m) on Swiss territory.

Sport meets recuperation! Cross-country skiing is endurance training, slow muscle training and a 

recreative excursion in the snowy mountains, all at the same time. The cross-country instructor supports 

you from your current skill level to excellence. The 25-km long trail network offers plenty of variation 

for beginner and intermediate skiers. The cross-country skiing day easily becomes the highlight of the 

holiday thanks to the amazing panoramic views and the camaraderie with instructor and other skiers.

Let’s all become champions! It’s easy: with 

nice and responsible ski instructors, the 

best learning-aid gear, and loads of new 

friends the little ones feel safe and learn

Bambini Ski school (3–5 yrs) 

Bibi the mascot can’t wait to play with your children while 

they make their first attempts skiing. Bibiland was 

made only for the purpose of making an ideal place to play, 

ski and discover lots of fun things. Fun, variation and safety 

always take center stage. Due to the physique of small 

children, Bambini courses can only be booked as half 

day courses (mornings).

Join the scene! The courses are subdivided in to basic, intermediate and advanced courses with one goal 

in common: to get that free feeling of effortless gliding through the snow while experiencing safe adventures. 

Beginners have a separate practice area for the first attempts, and advanced riders can strut their 

stuff at the Snowpark. Private instruction, special freestyle and racing courses are available on request.

Cross-country skiing is a healthy and peaceful winter activity. The 

region around the Kaunertal valley offers a spectacular network of 

cross-country skiing runs in the valley as well as the Hubertus run up 

by Nature Park House at Gachen Blick. 

The Nature Park House was built on Gachen Blick, one of the most outstanding 

sites of the region, and it has already become the landmark of 

the Nature Park. Here is the starting point for hiking trails and crosscountry 

runs through wonderful untouched and protected Alpine 

nature.

peaceful winter forests, as well as snow-covered 

fields. The clean Alpine air is a part of the winter

Hike only the signposted winter hiking trails. 

Don’t litter – throw your trash away at home. 

Don’t hike the cross-country runs. 

Keep your dog(s) leashed at all times. 

We kindly ask all dog owners to pick up after your dogs. 

(Dog waste bag dispensers and disposal bins are located 

outside Kaunertal Center in Feichten)

1. Schnadiger Weiher to Kaunerberg 

This run is a true insider’s tip for a romantic winter afternoon. Start at the parking lot just before 

Schnadiger Weiher and hike upwards along the snow-covered tree tops until you reach 

approximately 1800 m altitude. 

Length 2 km Access by foot 

Start 

Pass the Wirtshaus Wiesejaggl, turn right after 50 meters (chapel) 

direction of "Schnadiger Weiher". Turn left at the fork. 

2. Falkaunsalm 

The run is perfectly kept, has a sunny location and offers a splendid view of the craggy peaks 

surrounding Kaunertal. 


Start 

Pass Nufels the direction of "Kaltenbrunn". Before the church keep to 

right. The street ends direcly at the starting point.

Get on your sled and swish down through the beautiful Tyrolean pine forest. Illuminated sledding 

run, open every day until approx.11 p.m.!

4. Fendels 

A very special adventure for the whole family ist the perfect sledding run in Fendels. 

The chair lift in Fendels is the most convienient way to reach the starting point. 

Tip: Thursday nights are special because of the night skiing and night sledding in Fendels. Try it out! 

Thursday from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. 

The sledding run has been awarded the Seal of Approval.

Once a week, guests and locals gather in Kauns and Fendels

Kaunertal valley is also well known for its varied and beautiful touring routes. 

The course program covers: practicing how to safely plan ski tour routes; 

checking the equipment like the boots, touring skis, skins, avalanche transceiver 

and supplies; evaluating situations and calculating risks; choosing the 

safe route up and down the mountain in various conditions and steep terrain. 

The weekend courses are on request with a minimum of 4 participants.

Prerequisite: No scaredy cats! 

Basic course: The three-day basic course is an introduction and thereby the foundation for 

further activities. 

Objective: The participant (according to fitness level) should be able to climb one rope lenght on 

a 70-80 degree waterfall alone. 

Advanced: These courses are appropriate for climbers with prior ice experience and graduates of the 

basic course. The goal is to gain experience and increase skill and confidence. 

Focus: Climbing technique, strategic climbing, rope technique, use of mobile safety gear, self and 

partner rescue. 

Objective: To independently ascend an up to 90 degree steep waterfall. 

Special course: Polishing the skills of ice and mixed climbers. Difficult routes are thoroughly 

discussed (strategies, techniques and safety), planned and climbed. Individual questions or problems 

are discussed and, if necessary, solved practically. 

Private tours: On request we also arrange individual summer as well as winter tours according to 

taste and skill level.

With the high number 

of steep icefalls, the upper Inn 

valley, and in particular Kaunertal 

valley, offer a horn of plenty for ice 

climbers. Even though almost 30 

winters have come and gone since the first 

icefall was conquered in this region, it still 

counts as an insider tip. It’s almost unbelievable 

that not more climbers have discovered the 

fact that our region offers more easy and 

medium routes than almost any other place in the 

Alps. Short approaches (most less than 15 min.) 

drilled platforms and mostly easy ascents make 

climbing these deep-cut frozen waterfalls in to an 

amazing experience. Depending on temperatures and 

weather conditions there are also great ice formations 

for more diffi cult and extreme climbs. The routes “Der 

Zwirn” in Kaunertal, “Lalinea” by the Renk waterfalls and 

“Das Problem” in Hochfinstermünz are household 

names in the climbing world, and definitely counts to 

the very best ice routes of Austria.

Pilgrimage church Kaltenbrunn, Kaunertal 

The event that marked the begin of pilgrimages to Kaltenbrunn happened in the 

12th century, according to the legend. A couple of shepherds found a large rock, 

with a statue of Virgin Mary on it. Rye and wheat was growing around the rock, 

but the grazing animals didn’t touch it. No one will probably ever know where the 

statue came from, but just next to the rock a well sprang and the place was named 

Kaltenbrunn. The earliest public records of “Kalten Brunnen” mention the place of 

pilgrimage in the year 1285. A fire destroyed the Shrine of Our Lady and the recluse 

in the year 1438, but the Miraculous Image of Virgin Mary was spared. Kaltenbrunn 

is one of Tyrol’s oldest pilgrimage destinations, and the many Votive images bare 

witness to answered prayers. The church Kaltenbrunn is the parish church for the 

souls in the Kaltenbrunn parish, and religious center for the entire region. 

The baroque pilgrimage church is located at an altitude of 1.260 m on a steep cliff 

just at the entrance to Kaunertal valley.

Fortress Berneck, Kauns 

The fortress of Berneck thrones proudly high 

above the entrance to Kaunertal valley. The oldest 

documentation of this structure is from a record 

dating back to the year of 1225, where it was 

mentioned as “Hegeno de Berneggo”. There are 

signs of pre-Christian settlements on this rock 

outcrop, mostly in the form of pottery findings. 

Historians assume that Berneck was built to serve 

as an administrative fortress for the Piller byway 

of the Via Claudia Augusta transit route. The Swiss 

nobleman Hans Wilhelm von Mühlingen bought 

the fortress in 1435 after the masters of Berneck’s family line ended. The fortress 

was renovated and changed during his lifetime, and was turned into a late Gothicstyle 

residence. After von Mühlingen died, the ownership changed hands several 

times. The last additions were made under Emperor Maximilian I at the end of the 

15th century. Starting at the end of the Middle Ages, Berneck slowly fell into ruins. 

The Hörmann family bought the fortress in 1976, and they have since lovingly 

restored the structure piece by piece. The castle has a mighty tower to the west, 

and three courtyards dividing the area into three sections. There is a high curtain 

wall on the north side, witness of the skilled masonry of the time. The Gothic oriel 

above the entrance counts to one of the oldest in Tyrol, as well as the “Gothic parlor” 

that since 2007 yet again shines in past splendor due to detailed renovations. 

The chapel, dedicated to the Holy Bartholomew, contains significant late Gothic 

frescoes, especially the altar fresco depicting St. John. A gallery with breathtaking 

views of the valley below runs along the south side on top of the 130-m vertical 

rock. Please note: closed in winter!

Cultural heritage valley museum Kaunertal 

The Valley Museum has exhibits showing the enormous diligence, devoutness 

and hard labor of our ancestors. It also shows the economic boost of the mining 

boom in the 16th century, as well as the cradle of tourism beginning of the 19th 

century. Other objects witness to the skillful handicraft of the local people, and 

other show off the famous sons of our valley. Stroll through the rooms and get an 

overview of the social, commercial and cultural history and present of the people 

in this high Alp valley. In prehistoric times, Celts, Rhaeti and Romans exclusively 

used Kaunertal valley as grazing land. Many village and hamlet names point 

to this. A permanent settlement was first documented as of the 11th century. 

Mountaineering became important for the region during the second half of the 

19th century. The European mountaineering elite met in Kaunertal. The Gepatschhaus 

lodge was built in 1873 and is thereby one of the oldest Alpine lodges 

still existing! 

The museum also houses information about the silver, copper and sulfur mines, 

hunting and forestry tools and equipment, and authentic old parlor from a nearby 

farm, a collection of historical kitchen ware, a smoke chamber, farming and 

handicraft tools and equipment. The clock maker Josef Jäger from Kappl made 

the church tower clocks for the parish church in Feichten as well as for the little 

chapel in Nufels. The turbine from the first power station in Kaunertal emphasizes 

the amazing technical development. Three Kaunertal artists left for the “big world” 

and became successful and famous: Melchior Hefele (1716–1794), Johann Gfall 

(1725 – approx. 1800) and Franz Anton Zauner (1746–1822).

Grand piano museum Nufels 

The museum is built in the shape of a classic grand piano. Anton Wille – organist, 

wood carver and farmer – passionately collects historic grand pianos and renovates 

them to their former glory. His instruments are on display in the grand piano 

house, where also many concert and events take place. Wille’s second passion is 

art, and his carving results in unique wooden objects. It is easy to fall for these 

pieces of art, which literally radiates light! Anton Wille said once about the Swiss 

Stone Pine wood: “It’s just like me… needs long to grow, survives almost anything, 

and is still very soft.”
