The <strong>Western</strong> <strong>Australia</strong>n Visitor Centre in Perth<br />
is one of the participating employers in the<br />
traineeship program, welcoming Emma Bropho<br />
in 2005. After completing her two-year<br />
placement, Emma was offered a permanent<br />
position, and is looking forward to putting her<br />
new skills to work in areas such as events.<br />
“Doing my traineeship has allowed me to learn<br />
a lot of skills and information about the tourism<br />
industry. I’ve also been able to see a bit of WA<br />
with trips to Broome, Margaret River and the<br />
Pinnacles.<br />

and it’s a really fun atmosphere.”<br />

Where can I work?<br />
<strong>Indigenous</strong> <strong>Tourism</strong> <strong>Traineeship</strong>:<br />
The <strong>Indigenous</strong> <strong>Tourism</strong> <strong>Traineeship</strong> is an exciting<br />
new opportunity for those interested in the tourism<br />
and hospitality industry, offering training and work<br />
placements in tourism.<br />
Program participants can work in some of the most<br />
exciting tourism establishments in <strong>Western</strong> <strong>Australia</strong><br />

The skills you gain could lead to the job you’ve always<br />
wanted. From working in one of Perth’s top hotels,<br />
to working with the animals at Perth Zoo or helping<br />
visitors find their way to WA’s most popular attractions,<br />
the <strong>Indigenous</strong> <strong>Tourism</strong> <strong>Traineeship</strong> is a great way to<br />
get the start you need.<br />
Who can apply?<br />
The <strong>Indigenous</strong> <strong>Tourism</strong> <strong>Traineeship</strong> is open to<br />
<strong>Indigenous</strong> <strong>Australia</strong>ns with an interest in tourism.<br />
The traineeship is open to people of all ages and<br />
abilities, from high school students wanting to get<br />
started in the industry to mature workers looking to<br />
try something new.<br />
What am I entitled to?<br />
As a trainee, you will be matched with a suitable<br />
tourism or hospitality employer and will earn full<br />
or part-time wages (pay rates vary between<br />
employers). You will also be eligible to receive<br />
pre-employment training and a mentor to support<br />
you in your work placement.<br />
How long is the <strong>Traineeship</strong>?<br />
The <strong>Indigenous</strong> <strong>Tourism</strong> <strong>Traineeship</strong> is usually the<br />
equivalent of a full-time, two-year placement with the<br />
participating organisation.<br />

The newest recruit at the WA Visitor Centre is<br />
Alisha Spurgeon, who began her traineeship<br />
two months ago. Alisha provides information,<br />
brochures and maps to visitors, as well as<br />
studying <strong>Tourism</strong> Visitor Information and<br />
Servicing part-time at TAFE.<br />
“Working in the centre is good fun;<br />
I’m learning a lot about WA and<br />
it’s great to talk to visitors from<br />
around the world.<br />
“I would definitely<br />
recommend a traineeship<br />
to other people. You are<br />
provided with plenty of<br />
on-the-job training and<br />
support and it really helps to<br />
build your confidence.”<br />
