A major feature of Highbury City of 

Portsmouth Centre (HCPC), situated 

in the heart of Portsmouth, is that 

training takes place in real-life work 

environments. Facilities at HCPC 

include industry-standard kitchens, a 

training restaurant, open to the public, a 

simulated aeroplane cabin, dentistry and 

healthcare suites and a nursery. 

The College’s Library service has a 

dedicated area for higher education 

students, who have access to 35,000 

printed titles, e-books, magazines, CDroms 

and DVDs. You will also benefit 

from wireless technology for personal 

laptops, free access to the internet 

including web-based email, advice on 

how to research and make the most of 

information resources, and the latest

Accommodation 

The College has its own on-site Halls 

of Residence with 75 study bedrooms 

used by international and higher 

education students. The cost per week 

is £75 (2011/12 rates) and students 

have commented very favourably 

on the size and quality of the rooms.

Highbury’s higher education courses are ideal 

for anyone who wants to gain a degree-level 

qualification locally, contain their debt and enhance 

their career prospects. A range of full- and parttime 

courses is available, including Foundation 

Degrees, HNC and HND Diplomas and professional 

qualifications. 

Qualifications at a glance 

Foundation Degrees 

Foundation Degrees are vocational higher education qualifications 

that combine academic and work-based learning. They can be 

studied full- or part-time and are designed with the help of employers. 

Foundation Degrees are equivalent to the first two years of an Honours 

Degree and can be taken as a stand-alone qualification or upon 

completion you can ‘top up’ to the final year of an Honours Degree. 

Entry requirements: You will normally be over 18 years and have 

successfully passed a relevant course at FE Level 3 (BTEC, A Level, 

Access to HE) with a pass/merit profile, and have the appropriate 

technical ability in writing, speaking and reading English. The typical offer 

for A Level applicants is 120 UCAS tariff points. The College welcomes 

applications from mature students without these qualifications who 

may benefit from an HE programme of study (subject to interview). 

HNC and HND Diplomas 

HNC Diplomas are studied over one year, making them ideal for anyone 

who is unable to attend a full‐time course. HNC Diplomas are highly 

valued by employers and can often lead directly to employment. If 

completed with high grades the HNC Diploma can be ‘topped up’ to 

an HND Diploma, which can lead to the third year of a degree. 

Entry requirements: You should have either qualifications and/or 

experience that are considered to give a reasonable chance of success 

on the course, or an appropriate National Certificate or National Diploma. 

You will need to possess a good standard of English and Mathematics. 

Professional qualifications 

Professional courses are studied part-time and include National 

Vocational Qualifications (NVQs), the Certificate in Education (CTLLS) 

and Professional Certificate in Education (DTLLS) and professional 

development qualifications related to specific industries. Most professional 

qualifications take between one and two years to complete. 

Entry requirements: Requirements for professional qualifications vary 

depending on the course, although you will be expected to possess a good 

standard of literacy and numeracy. To take a university level NVQ you will 

generally be employed at a managerial or supervisory position in the workplace.

Natalie Beadsworth 

Natalie Beadsworth took a Higher National 

Certificate in Mechanical Engineering at Highbury 

College as part of her Advanced Apprenticeship with 

the satellite technology company EADS Astrium. 

I took the course part-time, which allowed me to 

obtain hands-on experience at Astrium where I’ve 

been learning about everything from calculating how 

much it costs to launch a satellite to learning about the chemicals 

used to send it into space. 

The course itself was a mix of practical work and assignments that 

gave me the theoretical background I needed to develop my skills in 

the workplace. 

Ayo Adegboye 

Ayo Adegboye came to Highbury because he 

wanted to take a Foundation Degree in Computer 

Networking at a local college. 

The Foundation Degree in Computer Networking 

was the perfect course for me as it gave me a lot of 

hands-on experience, especially in the Cisco Academy 

lab, which has been really valuable. I liked the fact 

that I could study close to home and I found that the staff at Highbury 

were very helpful and encouraged me to aim high. 

While I was at Highbury I was offered work experience updating the 

College website and plasma screens. This helped to improve my 

knowledge and also boosted my confidence in dealing with people on 

the phone and in person. 

I graduated from Highbury in 2010 and moved on to Portsmouth 

University to take the third year of a BSc (Hons) in Computer Network 

Management and Design. 

I feel that the Foundation Degree I achieved at Highbury will help me 

as it has given me so much practical experience alongside the theory. 

Brendan Sole 

Brendan Sole progressed to a Foundation Degree in 

Travel & Tourism Management at Highbury College 

after taking a Level 3 Resort Rep course. 

I chose Highbury because it was the only college in 

the area that offered a Travel & Tourism course at 

degree level. The course was fantastic because it was 

so practical – I knew I was actually learning the skills 

I’d need in the workplace. 

A major part of my course was a 22-week work placement. I chose to 

do this at the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth. This led to me obtaining 

a full-time position as Banqueting Manager at the Spinnaker, which 

I’m really enjoying. 

I’m also topping up my Foundation Degree to a BA (Hons) Hospitality 

Management with Tourism at the University of Portsmouth. It’s been 

great to obtain a degree level qualification locally and it’s even better 

that my course helped me to find a good job. 

In the time my friends at school have taken to do their degrees, I’ve 

managed to go into education and get what I need from it, work for a 

brilliant company and get so much experience in different areas. And 

I’m not in debt. 

Sarah-Jane Rogers 

Alexandra Sage 

Sarah-Jane is a Corporal in the Queen Alexandra’s 

Royal Army Nursing Corps (QARANC) and 

already had a Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong 

Learning Sector (PTLLS) qualification so was 

able to go straight on to the second year of the 

Certificate in Further and Higher Education. 

I’ve found studying at Highbury really useful. In 

the Army we have a specific way of doing things 

but the Cert Ed has provided me with a fresh perspective, which 

is more student-centred and enables trainees to think more for 

themselves. Taking the Cert Ed has given me a real taste for teaching 

and learning. Once I’ve finished my period of military service I’d 

like to study for an English Degree and teach in a primary school. 

Alexandra Sage originally read history at University 

College London, and later gained a diploma in law 

at the London College of Law and practised as a 

solicitor for seven years before she decided it was 

time to pursue her passion for writing and enrolled 

on the 20 week fast-track journalism course at 

Highbury College. 

The journalism course at Highbury is accredited by 

the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) and has an 

excellent reputation. The course covered the essentials of journalism 

including news writing and shorthand as well as newer aspects like 

‘blogging’ and writing for the Internet. 

The highlights for me were achieving 100 words per minute in 

shorthand, and 95% in the exam on central government earning 

me the Oxford University Press Public Affairs Award, which I was 

presented with at the NCTJ’s annual public affairs seminar in London 

in September 2010. 

The journalism course was very intense and extremely challenging but 

I enjoyed it immensely. I cannot believe how much I learned over such 

a short space of time.

Portsmouth is a vibrant city and has much to offer in 

terms of entertainment and culture. There are plenty 

of bars and clubs, as well as numerous opportunities 

for shopping and entertainment. 

Music and nightlife 

The city’s music scene is thriving, with 

many live music venues. Big name 

bands and other touring attractions 

play at the Portsmouth Guildhall. 

Independent acts and comedy can be 

enjoyed at the Wedgewood Rooms in 

Southsea. Guildhall Walk is the place to 

go clubbing and Gunwharf Quays is a 

popular spot for nightlife. You will find a 

diverse range of restaurants and pubs 

in the Albert Road and Palmerston Road 

areas of Southsea. 

Culture and history 

Portsmouth is the current headquarters 

of the British Navy, and has a huge 

harbour packed with naval craft of every 

imaginable type, from Tudor warships 

and 19th-century gunboats to Second 

World War submarines and modern 

aircraft carriers. One of its most famous 

attractions is the Historic Dockyard, 

home to the world famous warships 

HMS Victory and the remains of King 

Henry VIII’s favourite ship The Mary Rose. 

Shopping 

There are some great shopping areas 

in Portsmouth, including Gunwharf 

Quays, the city’s landmark waterfront 

development, which has over 

65 designer outlet stores, as well 

as bars, restaurants and a cinema. 

Southsea’s Palmerston Road has 

a wide range of shops, including 

independent outlets, department 

stores and high street names. 

Spinnaker Tower 

In 2004 the city skyline was 

transformed by the iconic 

170 metre‐high Spinnaker Tower. From 

the Crow’s Nest at its top you have 

stunning views of Portsmouth Harbour, 

the south coast and the Isle of Wight. 

Sport and leisure 

Portsmouth has much to offer sports 

enthusiasts. There are plenty of 

opportunities to learn sailing, yachting, 

powerboating, windsurfing, canoeing 

and kayaking. Portsmouth is also an 

ideal destination for football enthusiasts 

as it is home to Portsmouth Football 

Club (PFC) proud winners of the 2008 

FA Cup. PFC is known for its great 

atmosphere and passionate fans. 

Further afield 

Portsmouth’s location, in southern 

England, is ideal for easy access – 

being only 100km (60 miles) from 

London and half an hour from the 

nearest international airport. Mainland 

Europe is within easy reach by ferry, 

as Portsmouth is one of Britain’s 

best-connected ports. Closer to home, 

Brighton, Winchester and the Isle of 

Wight are nearby. 

Portsmouth is also on the doorstep 

of the South Downs National Park, 

which has a beautiful landscape, 

diverse wildlife and a fascinating 

cultural heritage. Nearby is England’s 

Jurassic Coast, 150km (95 miles) of 

wild beaches, sheer cliffs and stunning 

rock formations. This UNESCO World 

Heritage site is famous for its geology

Student Loans 

Loans for full-time students 

When you’re studying a higher education course at college or university you’ll have two main costs – 

tuition fees and living costs. But don’t panic! Most students don’t have to pay anything up front and are 

eligible for government-funded loans and grants administered by the Student Loans Company (SLC). 

As well as student loans, it may be possible to get additional bursaries and maintenance grants (which 

you do not need to repay). Additional support is also available for students with children or those who 

have a disability. 

Once you’ve graduated you may worry that you’ve got an enormous debt hanging over you. Again, 

there’s no need to panic. You don’t have to repay a penny until you get a job and are earning more than 

£21,000 a year. 

All courses identified as being full time are eligible for a tuition fee loan. 

Loans for part-time students 

If you wish to study part-time you can now apply for a tuition fee loan, provided your course is at least 

25% of an equivalent full-time course (eg four years instead of one year full time). You will have to start 

repaying your loan after four years even if you are still studying. Part-time students cannot apply for 

maintenance loans.

All English students starting a higher education course in 2012 will apply for a loan through the online
