In 1960, the facility’s ownership passed from the United States government to the state of Arkansas to serve as a rehabilitation center for Arkansans living with disabilities. During the ceremony, Governor Beebe was joined by state Senator Terry Smith, state Senator Steve Faris, state Representative Mike Burris, state Representative Bill Sample, state Representative Rick Saunders, state Representative Gene Shelby, Hot Springs Mayor Mike Bush, Department of Workforce Education Director William L. “Bill” Walker, Jr., DWE Division of Arkansas Rehabilitation Services Commissioner Robert Treviño and Hot Springs Rehabilitation Center Administrator Barbara McBeth- Lewis. “It’s an honor to have the Hot Springs Rehabilitation Center named to the National Register of Historic Places, but we’re still making history here everyday,” Walker said. “Through the services and programs offered at the Center, Arkansans with disabilities are getting a chance to learn the skills they will need to get a good job and, ultimately, live independently. These students will soon be writing their own history.
