ANincrease undergraduate enrolment,
increased financial aid and a greater
number of awards distributed to our students
marked a year of growth for the Registrar’s
Office. Our undergraduate student
body now numbers 3,884, the largest undergraduate
enrolment in the Faculty’s history;
full-time graduate enrolment is 1,280.
With 1,083 first year students enrolled this
year, we exceeded our target. Admissions staff
generate all the Faculty’s admission correspondence.
We also boast one of the country’s
first on-line Student Profile Forms; it allows
our Admissions Committee to consider our
candidates’ broader interests, in addition to
the rigorous, required courses. State-of-theart
technology enables us to deal with approximately
7,000 applications, 19,000 telephone
inquiries and over 12,000 e-mail queries
annually from Ontario and around the world.

We enrolled the
largest undergraduate class
in the Faculty’s history:
3,884 students.
The office distributed about $7 million in
student loans and $2.2 million in grants and
bursaries to undergraduates in 2000-01. In
addition, students were awarded $1.3 million
in scholarships and awards, a substantial
increase over previous years. We are grateful
to individual and corporate donors for their
much-needed assistance.
The Summer Mentorship Program, now
in its seventh year, hosted 40 high school
students, selected from over 100 applicants
in the greater Toronto area. The five-week
enrichment program, co-ordinated by Chemical
undergraduate, Ms. Muna Muasher,
allowed students to earn high school credits
for participating in research, projects and
lectures under professorial supervision.
Our International Student Exchange
program is flourishing, with six of our students
sent to Singapore, France, Israel, and
England this year. We are hosting 12 students
from overseas.
The Registrar’s Office provides an ongoing
advisory role to the UofT student chapter
of WISE (Women in Science and Engineering).
WISE activities in the past year
included a mentorship program, a workshop
hosted by Wired Women Toronto, school
outreach, and tours of the Hospital for Sick
Children and Lucent Technologies Canada.
I would like to thank all the staff in the
Registrar’s Office for an extremely productive
year.
