Strategic Growth
Awards to faculty, fruitful collaborative
research, increased demand for both
graduate and undergraduate programs
and innovation highlighted a productive
year in the Department of Mechanical
and Industrial Engineering.
The Department is especially proud of the
Faculty Teaching Award conferred on Professor
A.N. Sinclair, who teaches Dynamics
to 180 second-year Industrial and Mechanical
Engineering students. Another significant
award was Professor Ross Ethier’s Canada
Research Chair in Computational Technologies,
in support of his research using computational
modelling of blood flow patterns
in coronary arteries. The Premier’s Research
Excellence Award given to Professor Chul
Park will assist his investigation into manufacturing
processes for microcellular plastics.
The Centre for Advanced Coating Technology
which involves Professors Javad
Mostaghimi (Director), Sanjeev Chandra
and Thomas Coyle (MSE), moved into a
renovated laboratory space with equipment
funded by the Canada Foundation for Innovation
and the Ontario Innovation Trust.
MIE researchers also featured prominently in
the newly funded Network of Centres of
Excellence – AUTO21 – investigating issues
relevant to the automobile of the 21 st century.
With an allocation from the University’s
Academic Priorities Fund, MIE appointed
Dr. Chi-Guhn Lee as Assistant Professor
in logistics, a strategic growth area in the
Department. The Department is grateful for
the major donation from six faculty alumni
who work at Celestica, which established the
Celestica Alumni Chair in Advanced Manufacturing
Logistics. This magnificent gift will
enable us to create a new senior position to
expand our activities in this field.

option in ME attracted 107 third and
fourth-year students. The curriculum was
well received by peer universities at a
Canadian Society of Mechanical Engineers
forum on Mechatronics Education. A new
Advisory Board of IT industry leaders is contributing
to curriculum development of the
new Information Engineering program that
will be created from the current option in
IE.
The framework for a new Collaborative
Graduate Program in Knowledge Media
Design was established. Together with MIE,
the Departments of Computer Science and
Psychology and the Faculties of Information
Studies and Architecture, Landscape and
Design, are involved in an effort to enhance
graduate studies in web-based human-computer
interaction. The new Masters Degree
Program in Design and Manufacturing,
offered jointly with three other universities
through the Advanced Design and
Manufacturing Institute was launched. Its
courses are delivered in a unique, intensive
modular format to facilitate access to engineers
working in industry.
Our aim is to enhance our capacity
for future innovation and growth through
the recruitment of exceptional faculty members.
These positions, supported by the
Access To Opportunities Program, the Academic
Priorities Fund, donations and the
Canada Research Chairs program, will further
strengthen our considerable research
and teaching capabilities.
