FACILITY RENTALS<br />

Many of the Athletics Centre’s state-of-the-art indoor<br />

and outdoor facilities are available to rent at a competitive<br />

price. Such facilities include the gymnasium,<br />

Justin Chiu Stadium, fitness studios, beach volleyball<br />

courts, outdoor playing fields, Allan Marshall Pool, and<br />

more.<br />

Athletics Centre members have access to two types of lockers:<br />

Day-use lockers are available in the women’s, men’s and family/<br />

accessible change rooms free of charge and available on a first<br />

come, first served basis. The contents of day-use lockers must be<br />

removed daily by facility closing time. Locks and contents will be<br />

removed from any lockers that are not cleared out at the end of<br />

each day by facility closing time.<br />

Rental lockers can be rented by community, alumni, and <strong>Trent</strong><br />

staff/faculty members. These lockers can only be rented for the<br />

duration of your athletic membership and must be cleared out<br />

by the expiry date of the locker rental. Members must supply<br />

their own locks. Locks and contents will be removed from any<br />

inappropriately occupied locker.<br />

FITNESS AND LIFESTYLE CENTRE<br />

STATE-OF-THE-ART FITNESS CENTRE<br />

The AC boasts a new 12,000 sq. ft. cardio loft and weight room.<br />

Our bright, modern fitness centre is filled with state-of-the-art<br />

strength and cardio equipment, including 60 pieces of cardio<br />

equipment. From elliptical trainers and bikes to treadmills,<br />

rowing machines, and even a Jacob’s Ladder, we have it all. The<br />

cardio loft also boasts a large stretching area complete with<br />

medicine balls, body bars, hand weights, mats and stability balls.<br />

In the weight room you have access to everything from machine<br />

weights to free weights. While working out, you can listen<br />

to music, tune in to the flat screen televisions or take in the<br />

picturesque views of the Otonabee River from two levels.<br />

appointment with one of our certified personal trainers for a<br />

free fitness consultation. During this session a personal trainer<br />

will work with you to determine your individual fitness needs<br />

and goals to design a plan to help you reach those goals.<br />

Orientation to the cardio and weight equipment will help ensure<br />

that you understand how to use the equipment safely and<br />

effectively. At any time, our fitness attendants are available<br />

to answer questions or provide instruction on how to use the<br />

GROUP FITNESS<br />

As an AC member you have full access to a wide-range of group<br />

fitness classes. From yoga and Pilates to bootcamp and group<br />

cycling, our classes are designed to suit all fitness levels. Each<br />

class is taught by a certified, experienced, caring and encouraging<br />

fitness professional. Group fitness participants are ensured a safe<br />

yet fun class designed to meet your fitness needs and goals.<br />

All group fitness classes are free for community members. <strong>Trent</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> students can participate in all group fitness classes by<br />

purchasing a group fitness pass for $30 per term.<br />

Drop-in fitness classes are 45-55 minutes in length unless<br />

otherwise specified. Group fitness classes run on a first-come,<br />

first-served basis. With the exception of Zumba and Cyclefit, there<br />

is no need to sign-up, just drop in and try a class today!<br />

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS<br />

BALLET BOOTCAMP<br />

Add a twist to ballet! Take ballet technique and combine it with<br />

yoga, pilates, and muscle toning exercises to burn calories and<br />

strengthen your whole body. Enjoy a routine with amazing music<br />

that will motivate you to quickly and safely reshape and elongate<br />

muscles. No dance experience required.<br />

BOOTCAMP<br />

With alternating segments of aerobic and muscle conditioning,<br />

this high-energy class will push you to new limits. This is a highintensity<br />

workout designed to challenge your whole body.<br />

CIRCUIT CHALLENGE<br />

A total body workout using functional exercises to strengthen<br />

and tone all muscle groups. You will move from station to station<br />

and perform a variety of drills using equipment like dumbbells,<br />

weighted bars, bands or your own body weight in traditional<br />

strengthening exercises like push-ups, squats and planks.<br />

CYCLEFIT<br />

From beginner to advanced, this high-energy and vigorous<br />

aerobic conditioning class will challenge you using a variety of<br />

cycling drills to burn calories and keep your muscles in shape.<br />

This is a great way to get all the benefits of outdoor cycling<br />

indoors. Definitely one of the best cardio activities out there!<br />

DANCE CONDITIONING<br />

This class focuses on strengthening and lengthening muscles<br />

through a series of exercises on the floor, at the barre and across<br />

the studio. Imagery and mind-body conditioning will be used<br />

to balance muscles, build relaxed flexibility, coordination and<br />

alignment.<br />

KICKBOXING<br />

Kickboxing blends athletic drills with martial arts to create an<br />

intense cardiovascular workout. The main portion of the class<br />

involves combinations of punches and kicks that are usually<br />

repeated multiple times to ensure mastery.<br />

ON THE BALL<br />

Focusing on core stability and strengthing, you will use<br />

the stability ball to perform exercises to improve strength<br />

in your abs and back. Improving your core stability through<br />

exercises performed on the ball will help to improve your overall<br />

balance and posture.<br />

SCULPT N’ BURN<br />

A class geared to a variety of fitness levels, this is a great<br />

workout that combines aerobic and muscle conditioning using<br />

weights and dynamic exercises to tone and strengthen your<br />

whole body.<br />

SIMPLY STRENGTH AND TONE<br />

A beginner level strength and muscle conditioning class<br />

using a combination of dumbbells, weighted bars, body<br />

combination of multidirectional movements, this workout will<br />

Three workouts in one! Designed to challenge you, this<br />

workout will have you sweating through 20 minutes of<br />

cardio, 20 minutes of muscle strengthening and conditioning<br />

followed by 20 minutes of stretching and core strengthening.<br />

ZUMBA<br />

Ditch the traditional workout and join the party! Zumba classes<br />

feature exotic rhythms set to high-energy Latin and international<br />

beats. Before participants know it, they’re getting fit and their<br />

energy levels are soaring.<br />

ZUMBA GOLD<br />

Zumba Gold takes the Zumba formula and modifies<br />

the moves and pacing to suit the needs of beginner<br />

Zumba enthusiasts, those who are just starting their journey to<br />

a fit and healthy lifestyle, and the active older participant, while<br />

keeping all the elements the Zumba Fitness-Party is known for:<br />

zesty Latin music, like salsa, merengue, cumbia and reggaeton;<br />

exhilarating, easy-to-follow moves; and the invigorating, party-like<br />

atmosphere!<br />

anyone looking to find balance in their workouts.<br />

moves to strengthen your core stabilizing muscles.<br />

PILATES YOGA BLEND<br />

Taking the best of both worlds, this class will combine<br />

the flexibility and release of yoga postures with the<br />

intense muscle isolation and strengthening of pilates. Using<br />

the yoga postures to open and release the spine, joints and<br />

muscles, the pilates sequences will target core strength, improve<br />

major joint mobility and strength, and achieve better movement<br />

HOOP YOGA<br />

Yoga with a twist! Experience all the things that yoga has to<br />

offer while hula-hooping. This class is designed so participants<br />

can work at their own pace while focusing on their core body<br />

strength.<br />

HATHA YOGA<br />

Hatha yoga is a form of yoga that focuses on specific postures<br />

and breathing exercises to relieve stress, relax and rejuvenate.<br />

FLOW YOGA<br />

Flow Yoga takes familiar yoga poses and sequences them<br />

together to create a fluid yoga practice that integrates breath and<br />

movement.<br />

GROUP FITNESS CLASSES FOR 50+<br />

All group fitness classes for 50+ members are FREE with<br />

your membership. Non-members can join any fitness class<br />

with the purchase of a day pass.<br />

PILATES FOR SENIORS<br />

With a focus on core strength, this gentle full body toning<br />

and conditioning class for seniors features stretching and<br />

breathing techniques to help relax and rejuvenate the body,<br />

mind and spirit.<br />

FIT SENIORS<br />

Designed for the active senior, this exciting program gets you<br />

out of the fitness studio and combines sculling in the rowing<br />

tank, weightlifting circuits, boot camp-style classes, outdoor<br />

nature walks, gentle modified track workouts, wall climbing,<br />

low-impact dance, cardio and flexibility exercises to create<br />

complete and well-balanced training sessions.<br />

SENIORS STRETCH/YOGA<br />

This program combines gentle stretches and strengthening<br />

exercises to improve balance, coordination and overall health.<br />

Modifications are offered throughout with special concern for<br />

each participant. All exercises can be performed sitting in a<br />

chair or holding on to a stability bar.<br />

SENIORS STRENGTH<br />

A class geared to seniors to help<br />

strengthen the muscles in the body.<br />

Exercises are performed in the fitness<br />

centre and are appropriate for all<br />

fitness levels. Learn how to lift weights<br />

and enjoy meeting others in a group<br />

setting. Great for those with or without<br />

weight training experience. Everyone will be encouraged to<br />

work at their own pace.<br />

AQUAFIT<br />

Our dynamic Aquafit program is open to both members and<br />

non-members. We offer a wide variety of classes throughout<br />

the week. Please check the Group Fitness Schedule for specific<br />

days and times. Classes are included in your membership. Nonmembers<br />

can participate in any of our land- and water-based<br />

fitness classes by purchasing a day pass.<br />

AQUAFIT<br />

Regardless of your fitness level, you can get a great workout<br />

in the water. Your instructor will offer plenty of modifications<br />

to increase or decrease the difficulty of the moves, and you’re<br />

always free to go at your own pace. Using a flotation belt will help<br />

you stay afloat, or you can go without to really keep your heart<br />

pumping throughout the class.<br />

AQUA ZUMBA<br />

This class combines the benefits of an Aquafit class with the<br />

fun and energy of a Zumba class. Get a fun and beneficial work<br />

out performing Zumba specific dance moves in the water while<br />

listening to the upbeat and inspiration Latin inspired music.<br />

DEEP WATER AQUAFIT (with shallow water option)<br />

This low-impact class is held in the deep end of the pool.<br />

Participants use a variety of buoyancy devices to help strengthen<br />

core muscles and bring temporary relief from muscular and joint<br />

pain.<br />

BABY & ME AQUAFIT<br />

(ages 4 – 18 months)<br />

Baby & Me Aquafit is a 45-minute<br />

class for parents and babies to enjoy<br />

together. It is designed to give mom or dad a workout while<br />

splashing around having fun with your baby. This is a great<br />

opportunity to dedicate some activity to your day while giving<br />

your baby an introduction to the water.<br />

This class will use both the large pool and warm therapy pool.<br />

AQUATICS continued<br />

AQUATICS<br />

The Allan Marshall Pool in the Athletics Centre at the <strong>Trent</strong><br />

Community Sport & Recreation Centre offers instructional<br />

swimming, leadership training, recreational swim times, lane<br />

swimming and fitness programs.<br />

ACCESSIBILITY/SPECIAL NEEDS<br />

• The <strong>Trent</strong> <strong>University</strong> Allan Marshall Pool is located on the<br />

ground level of the AC. The pool features an accessibility lift<br />

and direct access to and from the family/accessible change<br />

room.<br />

• If your child has a special need, we can assist in placing<br />

them in the appropriate level. Private swimming lessons<br />

are available for children who have special needs requiring<br />

individualized instruction or physical support. Contact the<br />

Aquatic Supervisor at (705) 748-1432 for<br />

more details.<br />

AC SWIM TEST POLICY<br />

In order to utilize the deep end, including diving board and<br />

Tarzan Rope during Public Swims, individuals must successfully<br />

complete the Swim Test. Individuals are only permitted<br />

to attempt the Swim Test once per swim. Those who are<br />

unsuccessful in completing the Swim Test are encouraged to<br />

practice and attempt again on another day.<br />

The Swim Test involves:<br />

• a foot first jump into the pool off the deep end wall<br />

• a safe recovery to the surface<br />

• a 25-metre unassisted front swim (uninterrupted and<br />

consistent the full distance) to the shallow end wall<br />

Pool Rules<br />

Please abide by the following rules when using the Allan<br />

Marshall Pool:<br />

• Appropriate bathing attire is required.<br />

• All individuals who are not toilet trained must wear a<br />

swim diaper when entering the pools.<br />

• All swimmers must shower with soap and water before<br />

entering the aquatic area.<br />

• No food, drink or gum is permitted in the aquatic<br />

area (non-breakable containers containing water is<br />

permitted).<br />

• No outdoor footwear or strollers permitted in the<br />

aquatic area.<br />

• Individuals with open wounds or communicable<br />

diseases are not permitted in the pools.<br />

• No spitting or spouting the pool water.<br />

• No running on the pool deck.<br />

• The AC does not permit the use of outside equipment<br />

such as inflatable toys, water wings, floating swimsuits,<br />

and PFDs in the pools. Goggles, swim caps, flippers, and<br />

hand paddles are permitted. Please contact the Aquatic<br />

Supervisor at (705) 748-1432 if you would like to inquire<br />

if a particular piece of equipment is permissible in the<br />

pools.<br />

Please note: Lifeguards will stop swimmers mid-way through a<br />

Swim Test attempt if they become weak or tired.<br />

Not sure what’s right for you? Book a FREE screening!<br />

A Personal Record Card or Screening Slip must be presented at registration in order to guarantee<br />

appropriate level placement. Individuals should be screened if:<br />

• He/she is new to our facility or to swim lessons<br />

• He/she is new to Red Cross programs<br />

• He/she has not recently been in lessons<br />

Your child need not be screened if enrolling in Starfish/Duck or Sea Turtle Parented Programs.<br />

Adults need not be screened for adult lessons. Any person unsure of his/her level should call the<br />

Aquatics Office at the AC at (705) 748-1432 to arrange a screening appointment.<br />

A screening should be arranged and completed well in advance of registration day.<br />

The AC offers Private Lessons (maximum one per class) and<br />

Semi-Private Lessons (maximum three per class). These options<br />

are well suited for all ages and swimming abilities.<br />

Private Lessons are designed for swimmers who need more<br />

individualized teaching, or who are having difficulty with specific<br />

strokes, skills or techniques. These lessons are tailored to suit the<br />

swimmer, and will focus on areas specific to the individual.<br />

Participants with similar swimming abilities are ideal candidates<br />

for Semi-Private Lessons. In order to register for Semi-Private<br />

Lessons, all participants must be present at the time of<br />

registration. If you are interested in participating in Swimming<br />

Lessons with one or two others, please contact the Aquatic<br />

Supervisor by calling (705) 748-1432.<br />

WARM THERAPY POOL<br />

Much more than a therapeutic hot tub,<br />

the new state-of-the-art Swimex therapy<br />

pool in the AC is the only one of its kind in<br />

the region. In the resistance pool, a powerful<br />

and consistent current is created to provide<br />

resistance for swimming,<br />

exercise or therapy.<br />

The therapy pool can be accessed by AC members in two ways.<br />

DROP-IN GENERAL USE<br />

The therapy pool is open to members on a drop-in basis for<br />

general enjoyment. The current will not be available at this time.<br />

Check pool schedule for available times.<br />

BOOKINGS<br />

Members can book the therapy pool for 20-minute periods in<br />

order to use the current for walking, running, or swimming while<br />

experiencing the benefit of warm water.<br />

and cold injuries, bone and joint injuries, abdominal and chest<br />

We’re more than sports! The <strong>Trent</strong> Summer Sports Camp<br />

(TSSC) offers a unique and energetic summer experience<br />

of fun and friendship. We are an accredited day camp<br />

and a member of the Ontario Camping Association. Since<br />

1993, we have been a leader in providing traditional and<br />

innovative camp activities, caring leadership, and meaningful<br />

experiences to grow as individuals and teams.<br />

Registration for all new families opens on March 1, 2013.<br />

SPRING SCHOOL MINI-CAMPS PROGRAM<br />

Our spring school mini-camps are offered to elementary school children in<br />

grades three through six, and feature a full-day of indoor and outdoor activities<br />

to encourage skill development and healthy lifestyles. Teachers and classes can<br />

choose modules which complement their current school activities and the interests<br />

of the students. Module options include use of the swimming pool, climbing wall,<br />

gymnasium and surrounding fields and forests. The camps are available in May and<br />

June of 2013.<br />

RED CROSS SWIM SPORTS<br />

Red Cross Swim Sports offers many ways to have fun, stay fit,<br />

and be active in the water. Program focuses on a variety of<br />

aquatic recreational sports such as: Diving, Innertube Water<br />

Polo, Swim Workout, Underwater Hockey. Students will spend<br />

two weeks on each activity, exploring and developing their skills,<br />

while working to achieve their personal fitness goals.<br />

habits and build confidence and self-esteem. Upon completion<br />

of the Fit Teen program, participants between 12 and 15 years of<br />

age can use the equipment in the cardio and weight room when<br />

experiencing less fatigue, having better mood and a better<br />

quality of life. These classes are reserved for people who have<br />

experienced cancer. No previous yoga experience is necessary.<br />

Individuals wishing to participate in yogaTHRIVE must register for<br />

the program and have a doctor’s approval. YogaThrive is limited<br />

ROWFIT<br />

Looking for something different for your fitness? Try rowing!<br />

Gather your friends or register on your own to row on a<br />

weekly basis in our premier tank. The first night will start with<br />

an orientation to learn proper rowing technique, blade work<br />

and an introduction to sweeping. You will build on those skills<br />

as one of our qualified rowing coaches guides you through a<br />

series of rowing workouts over the following nine weeks of<br />

the session. Participating in this program allows you access to<br />

the tank during our regular operating hours too. Some weeks<br />

will conclude with an info session presented by experts and<br />

professionals from the local rowing community.<br />

through an orientation in the tank. The orientation will cover<br />

proper rowing technique, blade work as well as introduction to<br />

both sweeping and sculling. This is a one-time orientation and<br />

after successfully completing the orientation, participants can<br />

access the tank to practice new skills, knowledge and abilities<br />

sport. Dragon boating simply put, is a boat of 20 paddlers,<br />

line faster than their competition. Come experience the next<br />

level in Dragon boat training with an 10-week session in the<br />

paddling tank with a Certified National Level Dragon Boat coach<br />

who will guide and instruct you in all elements of the Dragon<br />

boat stroke, emphasizing power, speed, synchronization and<br />

GENERAL POLICIES<br />

AC WAITLISTS<br />

Individuals are strongly encouraged to place themselves on the<br />

waitlist for specific programs that are at capacity. The AC utilizes<br />

the waitlists to schedule additional lessons or classes when<br />

possible, or to contact individuals when spaces become available<br />

in high demand programs.<br />

CLASS TRANSFERS<br />

There are no fees to transfer a participant from one class to<br />

another in the same session. Any difference in cost as a result<br />

of the transfer is charged, and there are no refunds of fees for<br />

transferring to a lower priced class. No transfers take place after<br />

the second lesson.<br />

CANCELLATIONS<br />

The <strong>Trent</strong> Athletics Centre reserves the right to cancel or transfer<br />

classes due to insufficient registration. Should classes be<br />

cancelled due to power failure, weather, pool fouling, etc., the<br />

department will schedule extra instructors during the final weeks<br />

of the session where possible to help ensure program quality.<br />

We cannot schedule makeup classes due to time and space<br />

restrictions.<br />

WITHDRAWALS & REFUND POLICY<br />

• Up to five business days prior to first class: Refund issued,<br />

less $15 administration fee<br />

• Less than 5 business days prior to first class: Refund issued<br />

only with medical certificate, less $15 administration fee<br />

• After first class: Pro-rated refund issued with a medical<br />

certificate. $15 administration fee applies<br />

• One day clinics, exam fees, recertification courses, or<br />

materials: No refund<br />

MEMBERSHIP CARDS<br />

All members must swipe in whenever they enter the AC.<br />

Members are required to have their cards with them at all times<br />

while using the facilities and wear wristbands in all group fitness<br />

classes.<br />

PAYMENT OPTIONS<br />

Payment in person can be made by cash, cheque, debit, VISA<br />

or MasterCard. VISA, MasterCard and American Express are<br />

accepted online.<br />

Pre-Authorized Payments – Monthly pre-authorized bank<br />

payments may be made on one-year and six-month<br />

memberships. Following completion of a one-year term,<br />

memberships will continue to renew on a monthly basis.<br />

HST<br />

All fitness memberships, personal training, and registered<br />

programs are subject to H.S.T. Fitness memberships or<br />

programs for individuals 14 years and under are HST exempt.<br />

MEMBERSHIP CANCELLATION<br />

You may cancel your membership any time after your<br />

membership term has been completed. Cancellation requests<br />

MEMBERSHIP HOLD<br />

A membership may be put on hold once during a 12-month<br />

will be applied for each month the membership is on hold. The<br />

membership term must be completed once the membership is<br />

reactivated.<br />

Memberships<br />

All community memberships can be arranged in person at the<br />

Member Services Desk at the <strong>Trent</strong> Athletics Centre.<br />

Registered Programs<br />

Registration for all programs opens March 11, 2013<br />

Registration for all aquatics and registered community fitness<br />

programs will take place on a first-come, first-served basis and<br />

can be arranged in person or online.<br />

IN PERSON<br />

In-person registration starts at 8:30 am.<br />

You must have a Family membership which includes your<br />

children to receive the member rate for children’s programs.<br />

ONLINE<br />

Online registration is available at www.trentu.ca/athletics<br />

PAYMENT OPTIONS<br />

Payment in full must accompany all registrations. Payment in<br />

person can be made by cash, cheque, debit, VISA or MasterCard.<br />

VISA, MasterCard and American Express are accepted online.<br />

PROGRAM CANCELLATION<br />

Program refunds are available up to 7 days before a program<br />

start date and an administration fee of $15 will be applied.<br />

Program refund requests after the program start date must be<br />

accompanied by a medical certificate and will be subject to the<br />

$15 administration fee and will be pro-rated according to the<br />

program fees.<br />
