Safeguarding Children Learning tools for young people Safer Derbyshire website has a selection of packs and DVD’s with worksheets for teachers and youth club/volunteer workers to utilise. Information packs and films on consequences of underage drinking, seeing a person’s ability, crimestopper’s Fearless campaign and anti-social behaviour. The latest addition to the collection is from the Comenius Regio Project where Pingle School in South Derbyshire and Rudskolan School in Karlstad, Sweden collaborated to encourage pro-social behaviour, and engage young people to consider the development of a ‘safer school’. Counter Terrorism WRAP Training Two WRAP (Workshop to Raise Awareness of Prevent) training sessions have been held at County Hall. The first was held on 17 May 2012 and the second on 6 July 2012. A total of 57 people attended from various partner agencies including Police, Fire and Ambulance Service, County and District Council officers, third sector workers and social landlords. The workshop is aimed at frontline public sector workers to give them an introduction to Prevent which is part of the Governments counter terrorism strategy Contest and is concerned with supporting and protecting those people that might be susceptible to radicalisation, ensuring that individuals are diverted away before any crime is committed. Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service A portable fire suppression system demonstration was hosted at Chesterfield Fire Station in July for key individuals from the housing industry. It acts independently making it ideal for living environments catering for the elderly, infirm and the less able-bodied. The systems can be easily moved from location to location, protects up to 20 square metres, water damage is minimised and gentle water mist action reduces trauma for people. A Carbon Monoxide awareness campaign has been launched over the summer to make people aware of the dangers when camping or in a caravan. Messages include information on how to dispose of barbeques and maintaining gas stoves, as well as symptom checker information. Derby and Derbyshire Road Safety Partnership The motorcycle campaign running until September is well underway with several new routes being prioritised. These routes now have temporary signs to highlight the dangers and also increased police enforcement. A summer Drink Drive campaign is in progress with adverts telling people to contact Crimestoppers if they have information about anyone suspected of drinking and driving. A multi-agency event in Swadlincote was held in July to highlight the dangers of drinking and driving to local residents. An event aimed at Young Drivers was held in Buxton to educate drivers under twenty five about the risks they face on our roads. Last year 17% of the crashes in Derby and Derbyshire which resulted in a death or serious injury involved a young car driver. Employers are invited to an event hosted by Balfour Beatty in Derby in September to encourage management of work related road safety, as this can have a positive impact on business performance as well as saving lives. Staff Changes Marie Billyeald has left the Community Safety Unit and now works in the Adult Care Department as the Service Manager for Prevention. Marie will continue to have links to community safety through this role. Max Shah from the Safer South Derbyshire Partnership was seconded as the Anti- Social Behaviour Officer. He has now returned to his post in housing. Chris Hutton has left Erewash Community Safety Partnership to take a role at Staffordshire County Council. Garry Staples, Partnership Sergeant for Derbyshire Dales and High Peak, is retiring at the end of July, with Sergeant Stephen Johnson filling the position. Julie Hay, Partnership Officer for Amber Valley is retiring at the end of July with Sergeant Les Rawson replacing her and maintaining his role at Chesterfield. Partnership Sergeants across all Community Safety Partnerships now Line Manage the Persons Susceptible to Harm teams in their area, bringing closer links with the Community Safety Partnerships, vulnerable people and safeguarding. Training Update During 2011/2012, Derbyshire County Council’s Community Safety Unit have provided over 50 Learning and Development opportunities for a total of 1,394 delegates.
