starscoop Something’s Fishy There’s been a lot of hype about the health benefits of Omega-3 fatty acids found mainly in fish. But before digging into a daily dose of tuna, consider this word of caution. Actress Daphne Zuniga recently discovered that she was suffering from mercury poisoning—something that she attributed to her diet, heavy on fish. “Every time I ordered grilled fish I thought I was making a healthy choice,” said the actress in a recent interview. Zuniga began having symptoms that included memory loss and muscle aches, and tests revealed she had twice the normal amounts or mercury in her body. “Fortunately, I’ve been spared some other symptoms of mercury toxicity, including problems with hearing, coordination, heart function, miscarriage and digestion.” Over the past several months, Zuniga reduced her symptoms by undergoing detoxification treatment. Since pollution causes mercury and other toxins to accumulate in fish, Zuniga urges women to press legislators to reduce mercury emissions from power plants. California now requires that restaurants, supermarkets and tuna companies warn customers that shark, tuna and swordfish contain mercury. According to Health Canada, women of childbearing age and children should not eat fish with high levels of mercury. Pregnant women need to be especially careful about eating fish tainted with mercury because their unborn children are at risk for learning disabilities, motor skill impairment and lowered intelligence. Avoid: tuna, shark, swordfish, tilefish, king mackerel and marlin.
