Ray
Universal Studios Home Entertainment
If you’re wondering what all the Oscar buzz is about,
check out Jamie Foxx’s stunning performance as Ray
Charles in this loaded DVD release, containing both the
theatrical version of
the film and a
director’s cut with
more than 25 minutes
of new material.
Also included
are a pair of
extended musical
p erformances,
some 14 deleted
scenes, the requisite
director’s commentary
track and a
behind-the-scenes
featurette showing
the legendary Ray
Charles helping
Foxx find his character. About the only thing missing is a
Foxx commentary track, which unfortunately even the
two-disc limited edition disc doesn’t contain. What it
does contain is an in-depth interview with director Taylor
Hackford about the struggle to make the movie, a 28-
page behind-the-scenes photo-journal and seven more
musical performances (although a soundtrack CD of
Charles’s music would have been appreciated).
The Martin Scorsese Film Collection
MGM Home Entertainment
Sadly, Martin Scorsese has never won an Oscar. When
he was nominated for Raging Bull—one l of the greatest
films ever made and the highlight of this collection—he
lost to Robert Redford for Ordinary People. Ironically, he
might lose this year to Clint Eastwood—who made a
boxing movie. Even so, listening to director Martin
Scorsese on any of the commentary tracks in this collection
is like a master class in film appreciation. That these
discs—Raging Bull, New York, New York, the lesserknown
Boxcar Bertha and the concert doc The Last
Waltz
—are loaded
with extras only
makes this even more
necessary for the serious
cinephile. Among
the highlights: The
two-disc Raging Bull
Special Edition also
has commentracks
with screenwriter Paul
Schrader and boxer
Jake LaMotta (whom
Robert De Niro plays
in the film), and no
fewer than six behind-the-scenes featurettes, while The
Last Waltz
Special Edition includes amazing footage of
The Band, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchell, Neil
Young and others.
