Bibliography
Description
The papyri in the family archive of Horos, son of Patous Jr. are written in demotic and still
largely unpublished. It is difficult therefore to say anything definitive about the archive as a
whole. For this reason we start from a table where we have collected the data as far as we
could find them, mainly from the website of the Michigan papyrus collection 1 .
Inv. no. Type of contract Date Party 1 Party 2
4526.A1 marriage 1 199, Jan. 10 Patous jr. Nebuotis
4526.A2 marriage 2 199, Jan. 10 Patous jr. Nebuotis
4526.C1 sale of half house 186, Dec. 8 Patous jr. Tikas d. of Teos
4526.C2 cession of half house 186, Dec. 8 Patous jr. Tikas d. of Teos
4200 agreement concerning
a house
186, Dec. 19 [Tikas d. of Teos] Paneith jr.
4526.B1 loan 184, 24 Feb. Tikas d. of Teos Horos s. of
Patous jr.
4526.B2 sale of half house ? 184, 24 Feb. Tikas d. of Teos [Horos s. of
Patous jr.]
4207 cession of half house? 184, 24 Feb. [Tikas] d. of Teos [Horos s. of
Patous jr.]
The family stemma can be reconstructed as follows :
Patous x Eseremphis
Psammetichos x Taarmotnis
Patous jr. x Nebuotis
Tikas x Petearmotnis Horos
As can be seen from the table above there are probably only four transactions in the archive,
most documented by double or even triple documents .
1) In 199 Patous jr., a servant of Hathor mistress of Aphroditopolis, and Nebuotis marry
(4526).
2) Thirteen years later Patous jr. sells half a house in Philadelpheia to the woman Tikas.
3) In 184 BC the same Tikas gives as security for a loan the same half house to the farmer
Horos. Apparently the mortgage is immediately turned over into a sale.
The house changes owners within the family. This becomes clear in stage 3, where
Petearmotnis, the husband of Tikos, confirms the deed of his wife. He is a son of Patous jr.
(and inherited his title "servant of Hathor mistress of Aphroditopolis" and so is the other
party Horos, who has no title except "farmer".
It is likely that the archive ended up in the hands of Horos son of Patous jr. : he is now the
owner of the house and therefore also of the title-deeds concerning the house. It is,
moreover, normal that he also keeps the marriage contract of his mother Nebuotis.
