Abstract. Traditional medicine occupies <strong>an</strong> import<strong>an</strong>t place in the<br />

healthcare systems of developing countries. The people in<br />

developing countries depend on traditional medicine, because it<br />

is cheaper <strong>an</strong>d more accessible th<strong>an</strong> orthodox medicine. Epilepsy<br />

is <strong>an</strong> import<strong>an</strong>t health problem. Epilepsy is a chronic disorder<br />

characterized by recurrent seizures. Various pharmacologic <strong>an</strong>d<br />

surgical options are available, including different formulations for<br />

its treatment. There are number of drugs available for epilepsy in<br />

modern therapy. But the major disadv<strong>an</strong>tages being faced are their<br />

chronic side effects. Herbal drugs are acting at target side having<br />

same mech<strong>an</strong>ism of action <strong>as</strong> that of synthetic drugs. In this paper<br />

authors have discussed the potentials of import<strong>an</strong>t <strong><strong>an</strong>ti</strong>-<strong>epileptic</strong><br />

<strong>pl<strong>an</strong>ts</strong> which help the scientist for further research.<br />

Introduction<br />

Epilepsy is a disorder that is being viewed <strong>as</strong> a symptom of disturbed<br />

electrical activity in the brain. It is a collection of m<strong>an</strong>y different types<br />

of seizures that vary widely in severity, cause, consequence, appear<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>an</strong>d<br />

m<strong>an</strong>agement. Epilepsy implies a periodic recurrence of seizures with or<br />

without convulsions. There are around 20 to 70 new c<strong>as</strong>es of epilepsy per<br />

100,000 people per year [1]. A mental or neurological disorder encomp<strong>as</strong>ses<br />

broad r<strong>an</strong>ge of conditions that result in dysfunction of brain, spinal cord <strong>an</strong>d<br />

nerves. In this modern era, epilepsy is the most frequent neurodegenerative<br />

dise<strong>as</strong>e [2]. There are m<strong>an</strong>y cl<strong>as</strong>ses of <strong><strong>an</strong>ti</strong>-<strong>epileptic</strong>s that are of clinical<br />

usefulness with good prognosis for controlling seizures in most patients [3].<br />

Despite this, m<strong>an</strong>y patients have seizures that are not adequately m<strong>an</strong>aged by<br />

the established <strong><strong>an</strong>ti</strong><strong>epileptic</strong> drugs [4]. Moreover, the high incidence of<br />

adverse effects from the use of established <strong><strong>an</strong>ti</strong><strong>epileptic</strong> drugs is also a source<br />

of widespread concern in patients who use them chronically. There are m<strong>an</strong>y<br />

mech<strong>an</strong>isms by which seizures c<strong>an</strong> develop in either normal or pathologic<br />

brains. Three common mech<strong>an</strong>isms include:<br />

1. Diminition of inhibitory mech<strong>an</strong>ism (especially synaptic inhibition due<br />

to GABA).<br />

2. Enh<strong>an</strong>cement of the excitatory synaptic mech<strong>an</strong>ism (especially those<br />

mediated by NMDA).<br />

3. Enh<strong>an</strong>cement of endogenous neuronal burst firing (usually by enh<strong>an</strong>cing<br />

voltage dependent calcium currents).<br />

Different forms of hum<strong>an</strong> epilepsy may be ca<strong>used</strong> by <strong>an</strong>y one or<br />

combination of the above said mech<strong>an</strong>isms [5,6]. Both in vivo <strong>an</strong>d in vitro<br />

models are available for the evaluation of <strong><strong>an</strong>ti</strong> <strong>epileptic</strong> activities of drugs. In<br />

the in vivo methods, <strong>an</strong>imals are <strong>used</strong> for the demonstration of <strong>an</strong> injury by<br />

exogenous agents of <strong>epileptic</strong> seizure on the brain with its physiological<br />

signific<strong>an</strong>ce. In vitro models are employed to elucidate specific <strong>as</strong>pects of the<br />

mech<strong>an</strong>isms of injury. In vivo <strong>an</strong>imal models have been categorized by<br />

external agents <strong>an</strong>d chemical agents that initiate the <strong>epileptic</strong> seizures, for<br />

e.g., maximal electro shock (MES) induced epilepsy, pentylenetetrazol<br />

(PTZ) induced epilepsy, picrotoxin (PTX) induced epilepsy <strong>an</strong>d also other<br />

chemical agents like isoniazid, biccuculine (BCL), strychnine (STZ),<br />

4- aminopyridine, kainic acid induced epilepsy models also kindled rat<br />

seizures. Mech<strong>an</strong>ical methods like epilepsy induced by focal lesion, <strong>an</strong>d<br />

genetic <strong>an</strong>imal models of epilepsy, audiogenic models of epilepsy are<br />

available methods to screen the <strong><strong>an</strong>ti</strong><strong>epileptic</strong> activities of drugs [7-8].<br />

The alternative drug therapy for the m<strong>an</strong>agement of this dise<strong>as</strong>e c<strong>an</strong> be by<br />

the use of medicinal <strong>pl<strong>an</strong>ts</strong> <strong>an</strong>d their active principles having little or<br />

without side effects. The list of <strong>pl<strong>an</strong>ts</strong> having <strong><strong>an</strong>ti</strong>-<strong>epileptic</strong> activity is listed<br />

in table 1.

Conclusion<br />

Herbal <strong>pl<strong>an</strong>ts</strong> are well known <strong>an</strong>d have potential source of curing<br />

aliments from the time of immemorial. The health care systems are going to<br />

become more <strong>an</strong>d more expensive therefore, we have to develop technologies<br />

to essentially introduce <strong>an</strong>d integrate herbal medicine system in our health<br />

care. This c<strong>an</strong> be possible only through the development of st<strong>an</strong>dardized<br />

herbal products. So here we summarize the import<strong>an</strong>t <strong><strong>an</strong>ti</strong>-<strong>epileptic</strong> <strong>pl<strong>an</strong>ts</strong><br />

with more efficacy <strong>an</strong>d lesser side effects.<br />
