Corporate Responsibility
“We build a better future.”
Hilti. Outperform. Outlast.

“We can only enjoy long-term financial success if we take our
corporate responsibilities, in terms of society, economy and
the environment, seriously.”
Bo Risberg, Chief Executive Officer, Hilti Corporation

Corporate responsibility.
The goal of our corporate strategy is to generate sustainable
profitable growth. This also includes taking responsibility in
areas affected by our business activities. Corporate responsibility
is therefore an integral part of our business model.
Our core purpose states “we build a better future”. This stands
for our traditionally high sense of responsibility towards our
team members, customers, partners and suppliers, society and
the environment. The social and corporate responsibility goes
back to the company’s founder, Professor Martin Hilti. Today,
an interdisciplinary team creates the framework for strategic
sustainability management in all areas.
• Our corporate culture ensures that all team members show
a high sense of responsibility. Our values of integrity, courage,
teamwork and commitment are the foundation for the
daily actions of our employees.
• Rules of behavior for our team members and suppliers
around the world are maintained in our code of conduct.
These rules regulate fair and cooperative interaction among
all our company’s interest groups and are continuously
monitored to ensure they are observed.
• Company-wide standards for all business processes ensure
that we always meet, or exceed, the legal regulations
of the countries in which we operate. This applies to all areas
of corporate responsibility.
• We actively participate in international efforts aimed at
improving ethical, social and ecological standards in business
life. As a partner in agreements such as the UN Global
Compact, the Partnering Against Corruption Initiative or the
UN Caring for Climate initiative, our goal is to positively influence
the economy with our values in mind.
“Hilti made it possible for me to have a career – from receptionist
to account manager to product manager. At Hilti, one feels like a
member of a family where everyone helps each other.”
Simone Barlow, Product Manager, Hilti South Africa

Where potential meets opportunity.
Team members
Hilti’s financial success is accompanied by the strong personal
growth of our team members. We continuously invest in
their ongoing development by providing them broad opportunities
for a career in a successful worldwide company. Our
employees have the possibility to learn across functional and
geographical borders, to get to know different countries and
cultures and to embark on a career as an expert.
• We regularly take part in various studies assessing the
attractiveness of employers. The results show that we
are viewed as an attractive employer around the globe.
This fact strengthens our resolve to continue to rank
among the best employers.

• All of the company’s shares are held by the Martin Hilti
Family Trust. The Trust has a long-term interest and guarantees
the company independence and stability. This allows
us to concentrate fully on the continuity of our corporate
strategy and to offer our team members long-term career
opportunities.
• One of the main tasks of team leaders is guiding the personal
development of team members through structured
processes. A diverse offering of development and promotion
opportunities allow us to fill roughly 80 percent of our
management positions from within the company.
• We live our corporate culture. Each year we invest more
than 35,000 working days in special corporate culture
workshops, ensuring that we develop in this area and that
our team members are prepared for new challenges. This
is what we call “Our Culture Journey”.
“The Hilti team strongly supports our safety experts in setting up safer
and highly productive job sites. This is what we call a constructive
partnership.”
Philippe Chemel, Health & Safety Manager at Spie SA (France), a Hilti customer

A leader in productivity and safety.
User health and safety
Construction professionals know that only a safe construction
site is a productive one. For this reason we offer our customers
appropriate solutions for added safety and productivity in all
phases of their construction projects. Our products and user
training also actively contribute to health protection and
accident prevention.
We continue to invest in new technologies aimed at protecting
the health and safety of the user. We also offer sensible alternative
methods that aid, for example, in reducing the negative
influences of vibration, dust or noise. To expand our leadership
position in this regard we have established competence
centers, among other activities, on topics such as dust and
vibration reduction and ergonomics.
• Our innovations to reduce dust and vibration both increase
user safety as well as the life expectancy of the tool. In terms
of dust reduction this means a better working environment,
fewer breaks, less clean-up time and longer tool usage. Together
this generates added productivity.
• We have launched numerous patented systems for our tools
that also allow users to work longer and with added safety on
renovation and demolition projects. The many outstanding
examples include Active Torque Control (ATC), whereby the
tool’s motor cuts out in a fraction of a second if the drill bit
becomes stuck, Active Vibration Reduction (AVR) and powerful
Dust Removal Systems (DRS) that directly, effectively help
remove dust from the working environment.
• Ergonomic solutions, such as our extension systems for screwfastening
and direct-fastening technology, accelerate operation.
Improved handling makes it easier on the user, enhancing
safety on the construction site.
Combined with comprehensive user health and safety consulting
services, these solutions help reduce stresses and burdens
on the construction site. This also represents additional support
for employers, allowing them to often exceed local user safety
requirements.
Additional productivity through
reduced dust levels provided by
Hilti dust removal systems (DRS):
“Thanks to the support of the ‘Housing for all’ project I was able to
Help to self-help.
Society
“As a successful business family and powerful corporate group
we want to make a contribution towards the development of
society. Our goal is not merely to support people in difficult
circumstances, but to help them lead a life of independence,”
explains Michael Hilti, Member of the Board of Directors of the
Hilti Corporation and President of the Hilti Foundation Board.
Jointly financed by the Martin Hilti Family Trust and the Hilti
Group, the Hilti Foundation supports selected projects worldwide
in the following areas:
• Education and training
• Art and culture
• Social development
The aspiration of sustainability and responsible corporate
action is clearly formulated in all Foundation projects. This is
why the promotion of innovative ideas and projects benefitting
society is the clear focus of the Hilti Foundation’s activities.
The Hilti Group’s core purpose of “we build a better future,”
forms the basis for supporting education and cultural diversity
as well as ensuring that “help to self-help” provides the starting
point for a better life over the long term.
Social commitment
Education and training
Education is a basic human right. The cultural identity both of
the individual and society as a whole stem from education, which
is also the prerequisite for peaceful co-existence. Beyond this,
basic education also promotes self-determination and responsibility.
This is also a goal of Hilti Foundation projects, such as a
school project we have started in Kenya that makes high-quality,
affordable education possible for members of poor families. The
Hilti Foundation also has a strong commitment to developing the
International School Rheintal, which is responsible for schooling
more than 130 students from 24 nations, and greatly contributes
to making the Rhine Valley an attractive place for qualified
foreign manpower.
Social development
Social commitment is a basic prerequisite for living together in
a society. The Hilti Foundation’s social commitment focuses
on improving the circumstances of disadvantaged people by
providing help to engender self-help. Support centers on social
projects in threshold countries, such as Ashoka’s “Housing for
all” initiative in Brazil. This project helps people living in poor
conditions to gain better, affordable housing. We also support a
solar cell project in Ethiopia. Here, the focus is on a sustainable,
self-supporting solar business that offers training, sales and
after-sales services, creating added value at the local level.
Art and culture
We place a great deal of emphasis on cultivating a lively dialog
with the artists we support in the area of art and culture.
This helps encourage their wealth of ideas, their courage and
development. Our support of culture is also designed to have
a positive effect on social interaction among people. The Hilti
Foundation is currently focusing on two projects. We support
marine archaeologist Franck Goddio in his undersea excavations
in the port of Alexandria. The Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra
has become renown throughout the world. The Hilti Foundation
provides first-class concert instruments and other support to
this organization.
“The pleasant indoor climate in the production area is noticed by
everyone. We are all proud of our environmentally-correct workplace.”
Jasmin Heigl, Production Assistant, Hilti Thüringen, Austria

Yes, we care!
The environment
Our process management system contains all business pro c-
esses and is valid worldwide. It has also created a framework
for environmental topics that allows us to comprehensively
meet the demands of our corporate responsibilities. We want
to continue to improve the quality of our products, services
and processes throughout the company, and this includes the
topic of the environment. It goes without saying that this also
embraces meeting the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 international
quality and environmental standards.
Our environmental commitment includes both ecological and
economic perspectives. The knowledge that we acquire in this
area will increasingly be used to develop new and innovative
business fields. We are convinced that sustainable growth can
only be achieved if we systematically incorporate the environment
in our daily business.
• When developing our processes we set ecological-oriented
guidelines as the foundation for the careful selection of
wrecyclable materials, including the usage of environmentally-friendly
materials in product packaging.
• In 2007 we signed the UN Caring for Climate initiative. This
initiative is dedicated to improving the environment and primarily
focuses on climate change. By signing the initiative we
are obligated to increase our energy efficiency while reducing
our CO 2
emissions relative to business development. All
corporate decisions are made after a thorough evaluation of
the influence they will have on the environment.
• For example: the construction of an 11,000 square meter
production and logistics hall at our plant in Thüringen,
Austria targeted the use of existing sources for heating and
cooling the new facility. Instead of using gas-fired boilers
and electric-powered cooling units, existing waste heat is
deployed for both cooling and warming via an ecological
energy-sharing system.
• We have a comprehensive supplier audit management
system to ensure that the ecological and social standards
defined in our code of conduct are also maintained by
our suppliers.
CO 2
emissions per employee:
“Hilti’s code of conduct contains all the values necessary to create
a solid basis for a reliable and long-term partnership. We are proud
that these values have become an integral part of our organization.”
Mun Kong Hoe, General Manager of Lemtronics Sdn Bhd (Malaysia), a Hilti supplier

Responsible, respectful action
in all corporate processes.
Business ethics
Integrity is one of our four corporate values. Our ethical standards,
valid worldwide, are correspondingly high and apply to all
team members as well as to our suppliers and partners. Clear
guidelines call for mutual openness, honesty and tolerance.

Our standards not only correspond to legal national guidelines,
they are also based on responsible behavior in all corporate
processes and they respect cultural differences. The regulations
are mandated in the Code of Conduct for Team Members and
the Code of Conduct for Suppliers.

On the basis of our corporate culture and in the spirit of our
values, we want to positively influence corporate deeds and
behavior beyond the corporate sphere. This is why we actively
participate in these significant international initiatives:
• In 2004 we became a signatory to the Partnering Against
Corruption Initiative at the World Economic Forum in Davos,
Switzerland. This is aimed at introducing anti-corruption
measures in the construction industry worldwide.
• In 2006 we joined the UN Global Compact. It is also clearly
positioned against corruption. This worldwide agreement,
under the sponsorship of the United Nations, obligates companies
to maintain certain social and ecological standards.
