As a forum for free creative exchange, Revolt Magazine stands behind the formation of a humane, progressive and artistically expressive society. Revolt Magazine draws its inspiration from West Chelsea based artist Scotto Mycklebust, whose desire to reflect on the changing contemporary sociopolitical landscape and rebuke the rigid status quo fueled the creation of our premier issue. We drew our inaugural creative matter from an unfinished magazine cover Mycklebust found in his archived files (Frontpage, 2003). Adopting the iconic fist of Mycklebust’s first draft - a cross-cultural symbol of revolt and a mobilized, creatively conscientious public - the new cover, christened Revolt Magazine 2012, materialized. Discussion of the arts, particularly in criticism, usually errs toward conciliation. While this is wonderful in terms of creating a genial and supportive atmosphere among critics and patrons, unfortunately it doesn’t provide any kind of argument for art as a social tool. If we want visual art to hold an immediately vital place IN THIS ISSUE: 6 Today’s Fashion 8 The Occupy Aesthetic 11 Eat This Mlack Busic 21 Occupy: The Unlikely Protester 25 Interview - Ultra Violet 28 Anonymous 32 Op Ed - “Occupation: Symbolize” in our culture, we need to lift it out of its esoteric confines, out of museums and auction houses, and place it in the hands of the people that need it most. In the end, we must turn away from trivial discussion and turn towards argument, where art is not an elitist historical tradition but a radical means of showing us the way forward. Reflecting back on the global Occupy Wall Street protests of Fall 2011, we have aimed to address the aesthetic implications of the movement and become an arbiter of change at the crossroads of art and activism. But, just as the protesters of Occupy Wall Street refuse to accept the confining limits of a specific platform, so we eschew any specific agenda. Our only dedication is to belief -- belief in art, belief in progress, and, most importantly, belief in progress through art. Through trusting art as a socially effective device, we can trust society to express itself more intelligently and constructively. We hope that you are inspired by our publication and the explosive, occasionally radical contents herein. Let it be a catalyst to your own freedom of creative production. Revolt against that which binds you. Scotto Mycklebust REVOLT ARTISTS MUSEUM MISSION STATEMENT Through a diverse array of journalistic styles - investigative, academic, interview, opinion - and stunning visuals, REVOLT Magazine aims to ensure that art never loses its profundity. We urge our readers to join our mission, generating positive social change through creative production and informed cultural critique. www.revoltmagazine.org Copyright & Permissions Info: © copyright 2011 - 2012 Revolt Magazine.
