Tuesday morning included presentations on<br />

rootstock and variety evaluation. Invited speaker<br />

Dr. Hrotko from Hungary, informed the<br />

audience about the recent progress in cherry<br />

rootstock research. On Tuesday afternoon, a<br />

tour to the historical city of Nicea was organized<br />

and a technical visit to Atatürk Central<br />

Horticultural Research Institute took place to<br />

view the genetic materials of sweet cherry rootstocks<br />

and cultivars. These trips gave the participants<br />

the possibility to take a break from the<br />

intensive sessions.<br />

The first session presentations on Wednesday<br />

focused on plant physiology aspects of sweet<br />

cherries and were followed by a session on<br />

breeding and genetics of cherries. Invited<br />

speaker Dr. Kappel from Canada gave an overview<br />

on cherry breeding in the ‘New World’.<br />

Both poster discussion sessions were scheduled<br />

on Wednesday afternoon to give the participants<br />

the opportunity to meet and discuss their<br />

questions about the poster presentations with<br />

the presenting authors of the posters. The<br />

topics included in the first session on Thursday<br />

morning were related to irrigation and its effect<br />

on cherry quality. Invited speaker Dr. Lauri from<br />

France gave an integrated view on sweet<br />

cherry tree architecture, physiology and<br />

management. The first session of the Thursday<br />

afternoon meeting included presentations<br />

about the fruit cracking in sweet cherries and<br />

invited speaker Dr. Sekse from Norway informed<br />

the audience about some recent advances<br />

in fruit cracking in sweet cherries. The last session<br />

of Thursday included topics related to<br />

sweet cherry pest and disease management.<br />

Presentations about fruit quality and post harvest<br />

physiology of both sweet and sour cherries<br />

were introduced in the morning sessions of<br />

Friday.<br />

A pre-symposium tour included trips to visit the<br />

historical places in Istanbul. On the other hand,<br />

participants attending the post-symposium tour<br />

had a chance to see cherry orchards in the provinces<br />

of Canakkale and Izmir. Besides, they<br />

also visited the ancient cities of Troy and<br />

Ephesus and the Gallipoli district.<br />

In the business meeting of the ISHS Working<br />

Group on Cherry Production the participants<br />

voted to organize the 6th International Cherry<br />

Symposium in Chile in 2009. Dr. Atilla Eris from<br />

Turkey was elected as new Chair and Dr.<br />

Marlene Ayala from Chile as Vice Chair for the<br />

next term. Furthermore, the participants were<br />

informed about the deadlines and guidelines<br />

for preparation of the manuscripts for the<br />

Symposium proceedings, which will be<br />

published as a volume of <strong>Acta</strong> <strong>Horticulturae</strong>.<br />
