The Interact Youth Arts festival is back for the fifth year running 

and this time it’s bigger and better than ever before. Now on for 

10 Days, the extended programme for 2013 is both creative and 

imaginative, offering a huge range of activities for those aged 

12 – 21. 

The Youth Forum has worked extremely hard to make InterAct 

2013 as diverse as possible. Our selected theme is ‘Cultural 

Crossroads’ and we’ve tried to include other cultures throughout, 

from the Indian ‘Holi’ throwing on Sunday to the Japanese Ponyo 

screening on Tuesday. We’ve also tried to include different 

subcultures – so whether you’re a geek or a gleek, we’ve got you 

covered! 

Many thanks to all those who have helped with the Festival – our 

funders and sponsors, the Millennium Forum, Kate and Emma. 

But most of all, thank you to the Youth Forum whose ideas have 

formed the programme for this unforgettable festival.

‘Cultural Crossroads’, the Youth Forum’s selected theme for the 

fifth annual InterAct Festival, brings two things to mind. The first, 

I’m ashamed to say, is Britney Spears’s regrettable 2002 foray 

into road movies. The second is more interesting, and, I think, 

reflects the character of the festival as a whole. Put simply, it’s 

choices. 

In this momentous Derry-Londonderry City of Culture year, 

the ‘choice’ of workshops, masterclasses, gigs and screenings 

at InterAct has never been greater. Expanded to 10 days to 

accommodate our amazing acts, InterAct is delighted to welcome 

new partners Arts Ekta, the National Youth Orchestra, the Fresh 

Academy of Performing Arts, Magee Core and Hanger 18. Combined 

with our tried and tested ‘festival favourites’ (like Bounce’s DJ 

School and Janeen Whiteside’s photography), we are sure the 

sheer range of activities available – from gaming at the ‘Geek 

Night’ to singing with Fra Fee – will make for the most memorable 

festival yet. 

Choice, though, means something else to myself and the Youth 

Forum – the choice to engage. Paul Nolan’s latest Northern Irish 

Peace Monitoring Report has noted that whilst young people with 

disposable income have embraced a neutral, cosmopolitan arts 

scene, for those without these means, arts and culture represent 

‘just another form of social exclusion’. The 12 – 21 year olds 

that work closely with the Millennium Forum to create InterAct 

want everyone to be included. That’s why all our workshops and 

masterclasses are FREE, that’s why we have such a broad choice 

of events, and that’s why we’re here, year in, year out. 

So get stuck in. You’ve got a choice.

Become your own boss drawing comics and storyboards 

for Hollywood big shots – that’s got to be a dream job for the 

artistically inclined fanboy/fangirl. Meet artists who have done 

just that, PJ Holden (Judge Dredd, AD Comics) and Jonathan 

Cresswell (Game of Thrones, HBO) and learn how to create your 

very own strip! 

Starting with the basics, PJ and Jonathan will show you how to 

script, draw, storyboard and ink an original comic devised in situ. 

This is an intensive course for those with some experience of and 

a serious interest in art. For 14+ individuals doing Art GCSE 

(or alternative) only. 

Yes! 35mm Photography is back by popular demand! This twoday 

workshop will teach you how to use various functions of the 

camera: loading film, aperture, depth of field, shutter speed and 

light meter to capture creative and artistic black & white snaps. 

Participants will select, visit and capture a variety of locations 

within the City as part of this project. You will also develop your 

own film in the darkroom, printing a contact sheet, negatives and 

prints for exhibition in our InterAct showcase event!

Welcome aboard! Fresh from BBC Radio 1 involvement, BOUNCE is 

back for their fifth year with InterAct. Lead by Kwa Daniels, the 

Bounce Team will ensure you leave no dial unturned as you learn to 

mix up Rock to Hip Hop, Pop to House music using CD Decks, Record 

Decks and DJ Performance Technology to explore DJ Techniques. 

This year the workshops will focus on Song Selection & Stage Vibes 

using cdj’s and record decks with a special Controlerism session 

to keep you in the loop! You will put your newly acquired skills to 

the test by performing at the InterAct showcase event. Are you 

ready to move with the music makers & shakers? Good!! Very 

limited availability so organise yourself and your friends sharp! 

Wanna be in a band? Then get in on this gig. Wally of Cashier No9 

will mentor you throughout the week to write your own song 

and rehearse it for public performance. We need a drummer, 

bass guitarist, lead guitarist, keyboard player and a vocalist - no

include a new kind of group - a folk group. Like the Rock School, 

we’ll mentor you through the week for a public performance. We 

need a drummer, bass guitarist, lead guitarist and vocalist - no 

beginners please, you need to be able to play well and sing. If this

Do you want to join in with the U.K’s biggest, most exciting, 

completely teenage orchestra? InterAct is proud to announce 

that, as part of their Derry City of Culture residency, the 

percussion section of the National Youth Orchestra will be 

presenting a special creative workshop for local musicians. 

Whatever your musical background, be it bass guitar, oboe or 

triangle, bring your instrument and get hands-on with NYO, 

exploring a very different side to one of the most famous pieces 

of music of all time – Ode to Joy. 

This is a workshop for musicians with a serious interest in music.

Always a popular choice, stop-motion animation is a fun way 

to experience filmmaking with your own self-made plasticine 

characters. This animation workshop will give you the chance to 

develop a script, invent and sculpt characters, animate, edit, add 

sound and produce your very own Claymation film starring the

With his profile rapidly raising the roof, Strabane man Gerard i2 

is making a special appearance at the Glassworks as part of this 

year’s InterAct festival. With thousands of downloads and BBC 

Radio 1 airtime under his wing, Gerard i2 will deliver his Hip-Hop 

show in company with three other Hip-Hop artists and a DJ. 

This Hip-Hop and DJ combo will be heightened by a spectacular UV 

display that is set to filter through the glassworks and illuminate 

the night!

Stephen Carlin, local dancer and founder of Urban Shock Dance 

Company, will put you through your paces in Street Dance School 

2013. In these dance workshops you will learn a funky routine 

which will blend urban dance styles of street dance, hip-hop, 

street jazz, breaking and stepping. Throughout the workshops you 

will prepare to perform ‘with attitude’ on the Millennium Forum 

stage for the InterAct showcase event! 

Internationally acclaimed composer Conor Mitchell teams up with 

Sinéad Crossan, director of Fresh Academy of Performing Arts 

and choreographer Laura Doherty to deliver this exciting one off 

workshop in musical theatre. The team will lead participants in a 

fast paced session introducing a variety of techniques used by 

professional actors when training for musical theatre. 

Sinead will focus on the principles of acting, Conor will explore 

the voice in performance and Laura will choreograph a dance 

from a popular Musical Theatre production. So, if you wish to 

demonstrate your skills at the InterAct 2013 Showcase in acting, 

dancing and singing, then this is the workshop for you!

Magherafelt-born songstress Shauna Tohill is one of the most 

exciting artists to emerge from the Northern Irish music scene. 

Her unique brand of transparent, alternative pop – scored using 

strings, drums, percussion and keys – has an unusual purity that 

has brought Silhouette to screen and stage. 

Following the release of Silhouette’s infectious ‘Can’t Keep Up’ 

– used by the NI Tourism Board to promote Northern Ireland on 

television – and Silhouette’s appearance with Snow Patrol at the

conduct a masterclass on television producing. Together, the 

experienced team will show what goes into scripting, directing, 

acting and filming a TV series in this notoriously fast-paced and 

challenging industry.

The InterAct Festival is proud to announce a masterclass given by 

a renowned actor from the global sensation Game of Thrones. 

Filmed in beautiful County Antrim, Game of Thrones has been a 

huge boon to Northern Ireland, providing an army of residents 

with work and promoting the region throughout the world. With 

such a strong contingent of Northern Irish actors within the main 

cast too, Game of Thrones has also drawn on the extraordinary

Royal Academy of Music graduate Fra Fee is a valuable member 

of the musical theatre scene. Dungannon-born Fra has recently 

undertaken the role of Courfeyrac in the highly acclaimed 2012 

Tom Hooper adaption of Les Miserables, starring alongside Hugh 

Jackman as Jean Valjean and Russell Crowe as Javert. Fra’s 

involvement with Les Mis has seeped onto stage where he recently 

covered the roles of Marius and Enjolras at the Queen’s Theatre on 

the West End. Fra has also appeared as Schlomo (Fame, RTE tour), 

Billy Kostecki (Dirty Dancing, West End), Young Buddy (Follies, Opera 

Toulon) and Henrik Egerman (A Little Night Music, Yvonne Arnaud 

Theatre). His next appearance will be as Anthony in Sweeney Todd 

at the West Yorkshire Playhouse and Manchester Royal Exchange. 

A young Carl Fredrickson meets fellow young adventure-spirited
