EDITORIALLY SPEAKING
IN THE KNOw
froM perth to Ghana
AND A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE
For those of you a
little romantically
inclined, we wish you
a Happy Valentine’s
Day.
In this February edition of Sawubona we visit
Perth, Australia’s westernmost capital city,
where the sun shines almost all year round.
Beyond the tranquil Swan River and spacious
beaches of the Indian Ocean, Perth’s lively
inner city hums with nightlife, great shopping
and dining. You can cruise the Swan River
past parks and skyscrapers to the vineyards
in the Swan Valley. Of great interest too is the
old Fremantle Prison, western Australia’s only
World Heritage listed building.
From Perth we travel to Ghana,
West Africa.
The name Ghana means “Victorious
Warrior” and modern Ghana does present
to the visitor a victorious face, having
overcome many obstacles to form a dynamic,
boisterous and fast developing nation. But
the people are anything but warlike – friendly,
peaceful and tolerant, they welcome us into
their villages, markets and houses with the
cry: “Akwaaba! Welcome!”
Ghana has always been famous for
producing the finest cocoa beans in the world
and now the country also produces some of
the best chocolate to be found anywhere.
Returning home, we take a walk on the
wild side of the Eastern Cape province of
South Africa, which holds many rich and
varied interests for travellers. One of the
most compelling – dubbed an untamed
wilderness – is the magnificent Wild Coast.
This unique and unspoilt wilderness along
South Africa’s east coast offers unsurpassed
and memorable experiences of culture, history
and natural beauty to tourists searching off
the beaten track.
On page 94 you can read a fascinating
story about the Butterfly Route in KwaZulu-
Natal, an ecotourism-based project that
provides incentives to local communities to
preserve habitat in order to sustain local
butterfly populations.
As always, this edition of Sawubona is
packed with interesting articles and features.
For those of you a little romantically
inclined, we wish you a Happy Valentine’s Day.
Sit back, relax and enjoy your travels
with SAA.
Best,
