EMERGENCY EVACUATIONS
• In the event of an emergency evacuation, make sure
to follow the proper evacuation procedures. If you are
unsure of evacuation specifics, ask your RA or another
hall staff member to clarify.
• If you are a student with a physical disability during
an evacuation, make your way to an Area of Rescue
Assistance or Area of Refuge. If you are unable to
reach one of these areas, “defend in place” until
emergency rescue personnel can reach you.
Areas of Rescue Assistance/Refuge are clearly
marked and are typically located in stairwells
or areas immediately adjacent to stairwells.
• If you are with a friend with a physical disability during
an evacuation, do not attempt to carry him/her out of
the building.
OTHER HELPFUL TIPS
• Register your contact information with “UI-
Emergency” at http://emergency.illinois.edu to receive
messages about critical safety issues on campus.
• Never leave personal property (e.g., book bag, laptop
computers, etc.) unattended for any period of time.
Theft is the number one crime on campus.
• Drink responsibly—remember, your ability to respond
is diminished by over-consumption of alcohol.
Playing it safe
in the residence halls — Security is our number one priority in University Housing. Please let us know if you have a concern related to security.
WALKING AROUND CAMPUS
• Stay alert—call the police immediately to report
suspicious activity.
• Avoid walking alone at night. Travel in groups when
possible and always walk in well-lit, heavily traveled
areas.
• Learn where the campus emergency phones are
located and how to use them.
• Learn the best routes between your residence hall and
your classes, work, and activities.
• Take the safest route, not the fastest route. The safest
route is usually the best lit, most traveled one.
• Turn down your electronic devices. Excessive volume
or use of electronic devices (iPods, cell phones, etc.)
can distract you from a potential safety hazard.
• Carry a cell phone, whistle, or a personal alarm to
alert people that you need help.
• When you go out, let a friend or roommate know where
and with whom you’ll be and when you’ll be back.
KEYS AND iCARDS
• Students should keep their room door locked at all times.
• The room key and bathroom key is a primary means of
security for roommate(s) as well as room belongings.
• Each resident of the University residence halls is
issued access through their ID card, which will permit
entrance to the hall and the floor security door. The
i-card is used to gain access through security doors.
Security doors are cored to accept room keys if the
i-card system is down.
• Loaning a room key or access card to another person
or duplicating a room key is a violation of residence
hall and campus policy and may result in disciplinary
action. Keys or i-cards found in possession of someone
other than the designated resident will be confiscated.
AT HOME IN THE HALLS
• Non-residents must be escorted on individual floors at
all times.
• Doors and windows to your residence hall, apartment,
or home should be locked. Do not loan out your key or
access card.
• Security Guards staffed by University of Illinois police
do safety rounds in all University residence halls.
• Don’t prop exterior doors. If you find one open, close
it. These doors are locked 24 hours a day for your
protection.
• Do not leave your identification, wallets, checkbooks,
jewelry, cameras, and other valuables in open view.
• Program your phone’s speed dial memory with
emergency numbers.
• Record the serial numbers of valuable objects you
have in your room, home, or office. Engrave such
objects with your name or driver’s license number.
Engravers are available from the University residence
halls and the University Police.
• Do not allow people you do not know well to stay
overnight in your room, apartment, or home.
• If you notice a person attempting to gain entry to your
residence or attempting to look into your residence,
call the police.
Services offered by UIPD
EMERGENCY PHONES
These phones are connected directly to the University
Police Department and are monitored 24-hours a day, 7
days a week, including all holidays. The phones can be
used to request help, report a crime in progress, report
suspicious activities, request an escort, or for any other
type of emergency you may encounter. If you have any
questions about the use or location of an emergency
phone, call the University of Illinois Police at 217-333-
1216.
SAFEWALKS
SafeWalks is a courtesy service provided to University of
Illinois students so that they do not have to walk alone
within the campus area. People who are interested in a
SafeWalk should contact the University of Illinois Police
Student Patrol during their operating hours (9 p.m. to
2 a.m., Sunday through Thursday, and 9 p.m. to 3
a.m., Friday or Saturday). Contact UIPD or press an
emergency phone button and wait for the dispatcher.
Please give at least 20 minutes notice for the SafeWalk.
