Profile of Dr. Muhammad Mohiuddin
I come of a middle-class, educated family of Karachi. I was born on June 9, 1969 in
Thatta where my father was posted as cotton researcher in the department of Agriculture,
Government of Sindh. I am number seven of eight siblings and my father was an honest
government officer and the only breadwinner of the family; needless to say it was very
difficult for us to make both ends meet. In 1980 my only elder brother got a job in Saudia
Arabia, this additional source of income improved our financial position considerably;
however, I continued studying in government schools and based on my good scores in
Higher Secondary Certificate ( HSC) exams I got admission in the department of Electrical
Engineering, NED University in 1987.
My only repentance at NED is that I lost about two most valuable years of my life because of frequent closure of
the University due to political unrest either in the city or on the campus; as a result it took me about six years to finish a 4-
year BE degree course. In January 1994, after working for less than a year for the dealer of Caterpillar Inc. ( The USbased
earth moving equipment manufacturers) in Pakistan I proceeded to USA to do my MS in electrical engineering
from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. I faced some financial hardships in the beginning, but with some partial funding
from the government and my familial support I overcame those difficulties and later on got a Research Assistantship and
finished MS by June 1996. Immediately after finishing my MS I came back to Pakistan and worked as an engineering
faculty member in Hamdard University, Karachi Institute of IT and finally at Bahria University. In January 2007,
I received a scholarship from HEC under 10% overseas scholarship program and proceeded to Manchester, UK.
Going abroad for PhD has not been an easy decision for me as I had to leave behind my parents, who stayed with one of
my siblings as I left Pakistan with my wife and children.
Although we had some medical
doctors and engineers in the family, yet
I am the first in my family to have
received a doctorate in engineering.
During my stay in the UK I had the
opportunity to broaden not only my
technical horizon, but the living
experience in a true multi-cultural
society also gave me an excellent
social experience.
During both MS and PhD my
research work has been in the field of
III-V semiconductor electronics. During
PhD I focused on the RF
measurements and physical and
empirical device modeling of InP based
Heterojunction Bipolar Transistors (
HBTs) and High Electron Mobility
Transistors ( HEMTs). It is unfortunate
that due to the complexity of the subject
and the dearth of faculty members,
device electronics has been ignored in
the curricula of undergraduate and
graduate level electrical engineering
programs in Pakistan. I am very
