varieties including the delicately shaded ‘Raspberry Sundae’
pictured here. Other available varieties should include; ‘Felix
Supreme’, ‘Festiva Maxima’, ‘Kansas’, ‘Pink Parfait’, the beautiful
single white ‘Jan van Leeuwen’ , ‘Paul M. Wild’, ‘Shirley Temple’ and
the popular ‘Bowl of Beauty’ pictured on page 1.
Plus, this year Orchard is pleased to offer the incredible new ‘Itoh
Hybrids.’ These plants are the
result of crossing tree peonies,
which have woody stems, and
herbaceous peonies, which die
back to the ground in winter.
The result of this crossbreeding
is that Itoh peonies
have the flowers and foliage
of tree peonies but die back
each year like the herbaceous
peonies. The plant also tends
‘Raspberry Sundae’
to be hardier and smaller in
stature. Look for ‘Bartzella’ and ‘Kopper Kettle’… Fragrant, Stunning
and Unique!
Why not make this the year to add this most stunning and famous
member of the plant kingdom to your garden? As they say in China,
“Make room for the Prime Minister.”
Women’s Club will host
its 7th annual Lamorinda
garden tour, “Through
t h e G a r d e n G a t e , ”
Saturday, May 1st from
10am – 3pm, rain or shine. All proceeds from this year’s event will go to Farm 2 Kids,
a program from the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano.
Farm 2 Kids is a program that provides fresh produce to elementary schools by
partnering with afterschool programs. Through Farm 2 Kids, the Food Bank is able
to distribute 3-5 pounds of fresh produce to families who otherwise would not be
able to afford putting nutritious food on the table. This program currently serves 58
schools and over 6,500 children with weekly deliveries of fruits and vegetables and
that number is growing weekly.
The garden tour will showcase five Lamorinda gardens – 2 in Lafayette, 1 in Moraga,
and 2 in Orinda. In addition to stunning plant and hardscape elements, the tour will
feature many unique features that homeowners have weaved into their landscapes to
make them personal: fruit orchards and raised beds, sports courts, pools, an artificial
turf field (with automatic retractable ball catcher), bee hives, grapevines, old restored
barns, gazebos, and pool houses.
Tickets for the tour are available at Orchard Nursery in Lafayette, as well as through
http://www.moragajuniors.org and MJWC members. Tickets cost $30 per person
($25 tax-deductible) and gourmet box lunches can be pre-ordered for $10 each.
