One Stop for Answers With computer access and a library of books and videos, the new Women’s Health Resource Center at Morristown Memorial Hospital provides one convenient location for accurate and reliable health information. Whether you want to know more about mammograms, breastfeeding, entering menopause or talking to a teen about a sensitive health issue, you’ll find information you can trust at the Center. “We help patients and visitors navigate the system to locate the services and information they need,” explains Amy Gole, RNC, EdM, manager of parent education and the Women’s Health Resource Center for Morristown Memorial Hospital. “Our new center provides basic information, identifies helpful community programs and helps women make informed choices about care.” For more information, call the Women’s Health Resource Center help line at 973-971-4187. Under Construction If you’ve visited Morristown Memorial Hospital lately, you know big things are happening. Check out some of the projects currently underway: • Scheduled for completion in late 2008, the nearly 325,000-square-foot Gagnon Heart Hospital contains two buildings with six floors, state-of-the-art patient rooms, outpatient cardiac services and testing and support services. • A new parking garage with more than 1,000 parking spaces for employees of the Heart Hospital is set to open December 2006. • Expansion of the front hospital lobby and a new, covered drop-off area for protection from the elements will be available in early 2008. “This is probably the largest undertaking in the hospital’s history, and it’s exciting to be a part of it,” says Robert Peake, director of facilities and construction for Atlantic Health. “The community is growing, and we’re glad to expand to meet its growing needs.” well aware

This unique technology is targeting prostate cancer more accurately than ever before. developed By James Wong, MD, chair of radiation oncology for Morristown Memorial Hospital, and his friend and colleague, Minoru Uematsu, MD, the CT image-guided radiation treatment combines a CT scanner with a high-energy linear accelerator for precise localization of and radiation delivery to a tumor. “When Dr. Uematsu shared his concept with me, I thought it was brilliant,” says Dr. Wong. “We spent the next several years developing a prototype with Siemens Medical Solutions, which was introduced at Morristown Memorial in 2000. Since its introduction, we’ve seen amazing patient outcomes. I’d certainly be comfortable using this method to treat my family and friends.” How CT Image-Guided Radiation Treatment Works Traditionally, tumor location is identified with tattoo marks on the patient’s skin. These marks indicate where the radiation will be targeted. However, Dr. Wong has found many factors that can interfere with the accuracy of these marks in delivering radiation, including: In Support of You Whether you’ve recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer, are going through treatment or have a loved one living with the disease, you’re invited to the “Us Too” prostate cancer support group. It’s the largest group of its kind in the Northeast and has a dedicated onsite meeting space in the Peter B. Doherty Men’s Cancer Center at Morristown Memorial Hospital. Hosted on the first Tuesday of every month, the group provides an overview of prostate cancer, including nutrition, weight management and treatment options. Each meeting also features a guest speaker who has experienced prostate cancer. For more information or to register, call 1-877-666-1112. • the fullness of the bladder and/or rectum fluctuates and may change the prostate’s location • obesity and loose skin (common in older men) can shift the tattoo mark and reduce accuracy • the shape of the prostate changes as treatment progresses The CT image-guided radiation treatment technique can correct the above uncertainty because it scans the patient before each treatment with an in-room diagnostic CT scanner to locate (within a fraction of a millimeter) the exact location of the prostate. Now, the linear accelerator immediately begins delivering the radiation without moving the patient to another room and risking inaccurate delivery of radiation. Successful Outcomes “We’re successful in eliminating the uncertainty of the tumor movements in 100 percent of the cases treated by this method,” says Dr. Wong. “Additionally, we have seen a significant reduction of side effects such as diarrhea or rectal bleeding and damage to surrounding tissues.” Following the success of the treatment of prostate cancer, Dr. Wong and his team have expanded the use of CT imageguided radiation therapy to many other types of cancers, including the lung, brain and liver.
