#BringBackTheOnionBag
Well its been a while, but as The Mighty Dee reaches a point in its history when players
are arguing that it could quite possibly be the best Dee team of all time, it only seemed
fit to bring back a few institutions and traditions.
Benners, Wainers, Steveo and crew have been contacted and John has been sought out so
finally The Onion Bag is back!!!
We aim monthly to round up how our Super Hoops are getting on and how these new
crop of young players live up to the legends of old.
With all this in mind, this season as Dee Rangers enters into its 32 nd competitive full
season we held a special, first of many, pre-season friendly where current manager Ryan
Williams took his side out to challenge Benners’ Vets team.
A great day for all involved!

Dee Rangers; A History Lesson
With the birth of the new website (read all about it with Benners on page xx) there has
been some questions asked about the history of Chester’s longest serving Sunday
League team.
Who is the Top Goal Scorer? When were we formed? Who was in charge then and now?
Between Ryan and Benners they have been doing their best to find out the answers; the
first question was raised when the great date debate began.
“A quartet of players (Paul Spruce, Phil Thacker, Kerry Driver and Pete Chaloner)
hankered though to form their own Sunday League side. In 1980-81 season they
became aware that Sunday League side New Inn had slid into irreconcilable financial
difficulties.”
Eventually it was concluded, Dee Rangers dates back to its first full season in 1981/82. ..
We are proud to be written in the archives of Chester Sunday Football and are looking
forward to our 32 nd Season in the famous Blue and White.

Dee Rangers; A History Lesson
The Dee Rangers Highest ever score line…
After a 12-0 Home win this season against Saltney
Ferry many questions were raised. After much
research we have discovered that it doesn’t quite
reach the top of the mountain, despite being the
highest score line without reply Kerry Driver was
quick to tell us about a 16-4 victory against The
Westminster Hotel in 1982/83 season in which he
scored a hat-trick at the Roodee.
The Dee Rangers All Time Highest scorer…
With 141 Goals during his time in the Blue & White Hoops,
Si Brockley is crowned as The all time Dee
highest scorer.
A few have set their sights on the crown but it
will sure take some beating.

September Round Up
The 32 nd Dee Season kicked off this season started as the fixtures always seem to in
Section B – The new boys against the oldest team in the league.
After the pain of relegation last year Manager Ryan has been active in recruitment for
the season ahead. Taking on Axis United was the game we had all been waiting for…
Although nobody thought to tell Axis and they set out to ruin the Party.
The month went on to get better with five games throughout in both the league and the
Bill Gresty Cup.
The Mighty Dee started relatively strongly after a disappointing first week and everyone
is looking up as we head into October.
All individual match reports are posted on
the website at www.deerangers.co.uk but
we have also posted a list of just results as
Our Manager and Captain talk you
through how they have seen the opening
to the season…

September Round Up
How The Gaffa Sees It…
Last season was hard to take so the start of this season
couldn’t come quickly enough for me. It was my first
season in charge of the team and we really struggled but
we had a great group of lads that have stuck together
during the close season and we were ready to go again.
The game against Axis was a great atmosphere but the result didn’t suit, they wanted it
more and it didn’t make good watching. To lose to the newbies was not what we wanted,
but it sent us back thinking that this season wont be easy no matter how strong we are.
The game against Waverton was much more
like it, we turned up to fight and we made
short work of it with some great attacking
play and Crogg barely had to touch the ball.
We played great for a couple of weeks with
only a blip against waverton the second time
round. We finish the month in a good
position in both the league and the Bill
Gresty! Overall I think we look good!

September Round Up
The
Captains
Corner
At only 19 years
old Danny is one
of the youngest
players in the
team but after
three years with
the club manager
Ryan decided
that his attitude
and dedication
deserved to be
rewarded.
Having been
asked recently, he
claimed hat being
named captain
was the proudest
moment as a Dee
Player

Once a Hoop; Always a Hoop
Benners – Online
At the start of the season between the two managers
(First Team – Ryan & Vets Andy Bennion) challenged
one another to give The Mighty Dee Rangers the
website our great history deserves!
Benners used his knowledge of the club and his skills
acquired as a web designer, where Ryan writes match by
match reports and basically makes complicated requests
and keeps the Veteran busy.
We would like to take this opportunity in the brand new
version and first edition of The Onion Bag to welcome
you to the all new deerangers.co.uk

Once a Hoop; Always a Hoop
Benners - Online
www.blueskysportsconsultants.co.uk
A new venture for a Football & Cricket local legend.
Benners is using all of his experience to
help advise new clubs or new people
running a club for the first time. It is
something that comes naturally after over
20 years as a Dee Rangers and Dee manager
Ryan is already taking full advantage of the
skills available.
Great Work Benners!!
Player Focus
Over many illustrious years Dee Rangers has been very lucky to have some great
players, some Special Players and even some who could play football…
As everybody knows, everyone who plays Sunday league once “had trials” or “played for
England school-boys” but unfortunately lost all the photos, cant remember the name of
the training facility or “it was before the internet so there is no record of it” but The
Onion Bag will once a month bring you a special inside look at one or two players who
have an interesting story – whether they are any good at football or not…
“Rangers still play in their original blue and white hoops and
stick to the traditions of being a „good bunch of lads‟ who play
the game the right way.”
“The Badge:
1) The Real Ale tradition is still nominally around – homage is
always paid to real ale on team doos.
2) The general tradition of graduates and undergraduates
only, has on the whole been kept up – although Delgado‟s
HND in Bingo at “Wrexham University” is spurious at
best.
3) The 3rd element of our badge is a mystery”
Player Focus
This months Player Focus is all about the return home of Craig “Curly” Rogers
After three years away in America on a scholarship playing the beautiful game of Soccer
(whatever that is) Curly has come home.
He made his Dee Rangers debut four seasons ago, at the
age of 19, before moving to the States. In a season where
he played for close friends Hoole Rangers too.
As a youngster his hair caught all the headlines (obviously)
and his skills as a striker came second – maybe
that’s why he now claims to be a left back…
He couldn’t escape the Blue & White Hoops even over
the Atlantic

Player Focus: Craig Rogers
D.O.B. 22/02/1990 Age: 24
Where are you from?
Ellesmere Port
Where are you going?
The idea is to try and live the dream, I‟ve been away for
three years – the yanks have paid for my degree (thank you
very much by the way) and all I had to do was play
football for them. It was an easy choice but now I‟ve got
my degree I‟ve got a chance to keep playing – I am
heading over to Norway in November for a trial with a
pro-club. You never know what might happen in football
– but I hopefully will be earning a living from the game
sooner rather than later.
Why/How Dee Rangers?
Well back then the gaffa was a close friend, we played
together as we grew up and when it was time to play with
the adults we joined the same team as his Uncle – Croggy!
The rest for him is history, he has made a lot more
appearances than me but when I am home I always try
and play… I guess “once a hoop always a hoop”.
