Perseverence pays off for Wau local
On April 13, 2012 Nelson Krimbu
graduated from the PNG University
of Technology (Unitech) with a Bachelor
of Commerce Degree in Accountancy,
a dream that took 18 years to become a
reality.
It all started back in 1994
when Nelson enrolled in the Adult
Matriculation program with the
University of Papua New Guinea’s
Institute of Distance and Continuing
Education (now UPNG Open College)
through their Bulolo study centre.
The road to a university degree
with the highest completed education
being grade 10 was one of the greatest
challenges any grade 10 leaver in Papua
New Guinea would ever face and Nelson
can now proudly say that he has been
there and done that.
“With my Adult Matriculation
certificate, that challenge was overcome
when I entered Unitech back in 2001,
almost 11 years after completing my
grade 10,” said Nelson.
After graduating with a Commerce
Diploma in 2003, Nelson joined MMJV
(then Morobe Consolidated Goldfields)
as an Accounts Clerk based in Wau.
Almost 7 years after starting with MMJV,
he returned to Unitech in 2010, leaving
his full time job to study full time for the
Commerce Degree.
“Getting the degree was a dream
come true,” said Nelson
At his graduation, Nelson also
received an award for being the
best final year student in the subject
Advanced Auditing.
Nelson appreciates MMJV for helping
with his professional development.
“About this company, I’d say MMJV
faces challenges of all kinds everyday
and its employees in turn are challenged
to develop their skills, knowledge, and
capabilities in order to remain focused
and determined to deliver when and
where required. A good part of my
professional development was in this
company and it has been so far so
good”, he said.
“Looking back at my achievements,
and also at occasions where I was told
‘this is a waste of time’, I can only say
that with God, all things are possible.
“My story is a story of perseverance,
a story about setting a goal in life and
“My story is a story of
perseverance, a story
about setting a goal in
life and doing everything
possible to achieve it. It is
also a story of unwavering
support from a wonderful
family. “
It is also a story of unwavering support
from a wonderful family.
“I am still learning. It’s not over yet,”
said Nelson.
This quietly spoken man from
Wandumi village in the Wau area of
Morobe Province is now a Business
Analyst Superintendent.
