JD’s Decoder: Here at <strong>Jamestown</strong> we get tons of calls about buffing and everyone wants to know what we recommend. The boatyards that buy from us have<br />
a system that takes a couple steps—-but it’s really the right way to go. What you need to understand is that these compounds are basically liquid abrasive and what you’re<br />
doing is lightly sanding <strong>or</strong> polishing your hull. The m<strong>or</strong>e faded <strong>or</strong> “oxidized” your hull is the m<strong>or</strong>e you need to compound in <strong>or</strong>der to get back to the <strong>or</strong>iginal hull col<strong>or</strong>.<br />
Step 1 Compounding: If your topsides are really faded you should go with the Imperial Compound 3M-06044. This stuff is great at bringing back the <strong>or</strong>iginal col<strong>or</strong><br />
and knocking-out the ugly, faded look. It is applied with a polisher and a pad.<br />
Step 2 Finishing: The next step is to follow the Compounding with a Finishing Material in <strong>or</strong>der to get a glossy, bright finish. We recommend Finesse-It II 3M-09048.<br />
Again, you apply this with a polisher and a pad.<br />
Believe it <strong>or</strong> not you can get technical about buffing pads, in that there are pads with varying levels of aggressiveness f<strong>or</strong> the compounding and finishing steps. However,<br />
generally you can get away with just using the Superbuff Pad 3M-05705. You can use both sides of it--one f<strong>or</strong> compounding and one f<strong>or</strong> finishing, if you like. It requires<br />
the 3M-05710 Mandrel Adapter.<br />
Step 3 Waxing: The final step is to protect your finish with a wax. Use 3M-09030 Marine Ultra Perf<strong>or</strong>mance Wax. It’s imp<strong>or</strong>tant that you seal and protect the finish with<br />
a good wax to maintain the gloss that you just acquired. You can use any old rag to apply it but the rag will become clogged with the wax and eventually become pretty<br />
ineffective. The Microfiber Cleaning Cloth (NOT-06038) is textured in a way that somehow doesn’t abs<strong>or</strong>b the wax so that it brings out a great finish.<br />
Once you use one — you’ll never go back.<br />

Contourable, endgrain balsa wood. Coated with a thin resin film to enhance<br />

Typical applications include hull and deck c<strong>or</strong>e replacement, construction of<br />
small <strong>part</strong>s and inexpensive straight c<strong>or</strong>e replacement.<br />

JD TECH TIP: Urethane foam is great f<strong>or</strong> insulating and adding permanent<br />
flotation. Closed cell means it will maintain buoyant pressure even after<br />
prolonged exposure to water. It has the water resistant properties to keep<br />
a capsized vessel floating f<strong>or</strong> long periods of time.<br />
Urethane foam is also used to make light-weight c<strong>or</strong>e blanks f<strong>or</strong> sailboards<br />
and surfboards, provided that sufficient lamination strength encapsulates it.<br />
Urethane foam does not offer much strength f<strong>or</strong> structural applications.<br />
