University of Stirling
Football Scholarships
Football plays a major sporting role at the University of Stirling,
with women’s and men’s teams. Our campus is home to the
Scottish FA Women’s National Football Academy, the national
centre of excellence for women’s football.
Stirling supports the Academy through women’s football
scholarships, part of our International Sports Scholarship
Programme whose alumni include Olympians, World and
Commonwealth Games athletes.
Training and Competition
Our individually tailored football programme enables scholars
to combine their high performance training with study for
an academic degree, either at the University or nearby Forth
Valley College.
The weekly programme comprises up to 10 hours technical and
tactical football coaching and six hours fitness training with
specialist strength and conditioning staff. There is also regular
access to sports science support including diet and nutrition,
match video analysis, psychology, physiotherapy, lifestyle
management and medical expertise.

Coaching
The Academy is run by highly experienced Scottish FA qualified
coaches who work closely with the players at training. Further
support services are provided by our experienced, qualified staff.
Funding
Selected scholars can receive financial support up to £6,000 per
annum, jointly funded by the University and the Scottish FA, to
subsidise accommodation, living grants, travel, tuition fees and
other sports and academic related costs.
Academic Flexibility
A fundamental part of the scholarships is academic flexibility
to help combine study with high performance sport. This
includes assessment extensions, exam deferment and study
extension periods.
Accommodation and Equipment
Footballers have the opportunity to stay in on-campus
accommodation while every scholar is provided with important kit,
including full training, match clothing and essential equipment.

Players receive a scholarship when selected for the Academy,
which is undertaken by the Scottish FA. To be considered,
players must have registered for a recognised programme of
study at the University of Stirling or Forth Valley College and
have played international football at U19 or U17 level.

Winning Students
When selected for a University scholarship, female footballers also
receive support from Winning Students, Scotland’s national sports
scholarship programme for high performance student athletes. It
provides support through awards up to £5,500 per annum.

Study at Stirling
Flexibility and choice – Stirling has a refreshingly different approach
to degrees. You get to adapt and develop your study choices as
you go, combining subjects from across the University. Scholarship
footballers can study full-time or part-time, in undergraduate or
postgraduate degree programmes of their choice.
Sport-specific programmes at the School of Sport, which make up
12% of all applications to Stirling – include: BA Sports Studies,
BSc Sport and Exercise Science, MSc Sports Management and
MSc Sports Coaching.
