Term 2, Week 6 - 31 May 2012
What a weekend of very different experiences...
Simon Gill - Deputy Head Junior School
I had a great time out
with some old scholars at
the Crows game. Sadly,
“the pride of South
Australia” was far too obliging of
Collingwood as they showed us “how to
play the game”!
Yesterday I had the pleasure of driving
a Porsche Boxster S. Stark contrast!
When we returned from the drive there
was a fairly obvious smile on my face
that was hard to restrain. While driving
the Porsche felt fantastic, what spoke
even more volumes to me was the
generosity and open-heartedness of the
man who invited me to drive his sports
car!
60 Minutes highlighted the growing
trend of people my age and much older
as they take up exercise in a big way.
The shock of not being able to keep up
with his children at Auskick sessions
drove the couple in tonight’s story to set
the goal of competing in a triathlon.
Attempting to transform one’s self from
couch potato to triathlete is an
admirable physical goal. I found the
story of interest as only a few weeks
ago I also started running. The number
on the scales beginning to trend down, I
enjoy feeling fitter. This change has had
an effect on those around me too.
Walking as a family on Saturday, my
son reminded me as he jogged off into
the distance that he was, “Doing
exercise, Dad.”
“I really love you Dad! I love you very
much…” These are words without
prompting, they aren’t a response to
any particular thing I have said or done.
My son is at a beautiful stage where he
surprises me by telling me this when I’m
least expecting it. Whilst a huge
blessing, it also reminds me that I am
doing the right thing continuing to tell
him that I love him, over and over
again, even when he just replies with a
mere, “Ok.”
My weekend reminds me of the journey
our students are travelling. Some get
what we are seeking to model as
parents and teachers. Others reckon
they are doing really well (like the
Crows) until they are tested by
opposition of which they don’t have the
measure. In the short term at least they
taste defeat. Many students with
significant challenges press on with
endeavour day after day. A report card
or interview or a disappointment
re-focuses others to reset their goals
and aim for a change. Some may be
searching for a great experience, (or like
a runner) a landmark at which to aim,
something that will spur them on and
give them the lift they need as they
press forward.
Two things I take out of all this are
partnership and encouragement. One
blessing of school communities can be
that we seek and strive to do this
journey with your children together. The
benefit of the “together” is that we can
encourage each other as we help our
kids along the way. At Tyndale, we need
to keep finding ways of how best we
can honour and support each other as
we work at seeing our children learn
and grow.
By the way, my daughter came home
last week and has signed up for
Auskick! You may see me out there...
SURVIVING STEP FAMILIES
By Michael Carr-Gregg
This excellent book by Dr Michael Carr-Gregg gives lots of helpful
advice and shares encouraging stories to help you survive Step
families and even thrive.
‘As a step-parent, you can suddenly find yourself in a situation
where a child sees you as a walking ATM, an intruder, thief,
marriage wrecker or rank outsider, which leaves the child feeling anything from mild
unhappiness to such livid outrage that they develop homicidal fantasies about you.
This doesn’t mean that they won’t eventually come to love and accept you, just that
the transition requires great reserves of time and patience’. P 5/6
Chapter headings include; What is a step-family? How step-families are different,
Stages of transition, Put your relationships first, Get the parenting right, Look after
yourself and Keep it real with the ex.
The Aquarium counselling centre has a copy for borrowing should you wish to have a
look at this easy-to-read book.
Email Jan Lonsdale on janl@tyndale.sa.edu.au and we can pass it to you via your child
or purchase your own copy at a number of bookshops, Big W type shops or online for
between $16 - $20
INSPIRATIONAL TEACHERS
Our School has been invited to submit
nominations for the NEiTA 2012 ASG
recognise and encourage our great
teachers, and give them a well-deserved
pat on the back. NEiTA is the only
independent national awards
programme where individual parents/
grandparents, parent associations,
school boards/councils and community
organisations can nominate teachers
and principals who contribute
excellence.
Nominated teachers receive a
congratulatory NEiTA Certificate of
PREFECT’S PERSPECTIVE
The grace and love of Jesus Christ blows me away daily. The unending grace of God is a gift that God willingly gives and often we
take it for granted. The thing that blows me away the most is that no matter who it is, no matter what they’ve done, God is ready
to stretch out his hand of grace in the blink of an eye. Previously in my life I have felt the full extent of God’s grace and I am ever
thankful for his goodness.
In the past I strayed from God and I really lost myself for a while. I did some things I shouldn’t have and after I did them, instead
of repenting I just pushed them down deep within myself. I had convinced myself that I was no longer worthy enough to be called
His child and receive His forgiveness. I felt really alone in this period of my life even though God never left me. One day however,
sitting in church, the pastor delivered a sermon on Grace and during that 20 minute sermon God really changed my life and I could
feel His spirit really talking to me. I realized that even though I thought I was unworthy for God, God never left my side and He was
always ready to show me His hand of grace. All I had to do was repent and ask.
I want to encourage you today, no matter what you’ve done in the past, no matter where you are in your walk with God, He is
always ready to give you His gift of grace and this gift was only made possible by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who died on the
cross.
God bless
D-I-S-C-O!!!
On Friday evening (25 May), 202 students made a conscious choice to blame it
on the boogie by attending out annual Middle School Disco. It was a fantastic
night of moving and grooving
which resulted in close to $1,500
being raised for Novita. Thanks
to everyone who helped make a
good event great.
A VISIT TO THE MEDIEVAL FAIR
As part of the Year 8 SOSE programme studying Medieval History, it was thrilling to have the opportunity on Friday 4 May, to take
all 140 Year 8 students on an excursion to Gumeracha to visit the Medieval Fair. The organisers and participants at the fair set up
tents fashioned in the same way as an ancient Viking village. Students were able to watch as a Viking man made a table and to
touch hand woven cloth and handmade tools. Food was cooked in large iron pots hanging over a slow burning fire. The villagers
were all dressed in traditional Viking costume including handmade shoes (or no shoes!). Our students learned that carrots were
originally purple and have been bred to be orange for aesthetic purposes and were able to taste a piece of purple carrot…which
tasted identical to our more familiar orange carrots! A couple of Viking gentlemen visited and mingled with the students during
lunch break to answer any questions they might have. After lunch the students were enthralled to watch some large Viking men
engage in battle with their lances, swords and shields. In all it was a great day out; educational but lots of fun too.
PUBLIC SPEAKING
On Saturday Michael Rowlands (Year 11) and Hannah Gardner (Year 9) competed in the semi-finals of the Rostrum Voice of Youth
competition. Both students came third in their heats out of seven students, which is wonderful, but only first and second from each
go through to the state finals, so we were that close! The comment was made by the previous national Rostrum president that
“Tyndale students are continuously good” which suggests to me that we have well and truly made a name for ourselves!
PREFECTS PERSPECTIVE
School has gone really fast, we are
already halfway through this term and
for Year 12s we’re already halfway
through the year! I know for me that it’s
starting to get harder to get all my work
done as I get more tired every day and
the assignments start getting harder.
But then I see God the god of all the
gods that created all of this Earth and
that never tires. It says in Isaiah 40:28
“Do you not know? Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God, the
Creator of the ends of the earth. He will
not grow tired or weary, and His
understanding no one can
fathom” (TNIV)
When I think of this I get a boost and it
really helps me with my confidence.
