uc hastings 25
making public service dreams come true
A cy pres award adds vital
funds to the Abascal Fellowship
It is all too easy for law school grads
to get discouraged from pursuing
public service careers. Many public
service organizations don’t have
funds for attorneys, and the ones
that do typically pay modest salaries.
That’s why in 1997 UC Hastings
created the Ralph S. Abascal ’68
Fellowship, which is given to a
recent UC Hastings grad to support
his or her work with underserved
communities. Now, with a generous
cy pres award to fund the fellowship,
UC Hastings can continue making
these vital opportunities possible.
At the request of Bruce L. Simon ’80
of Pearson, Simon, Warshaw & Penny
and Reed R. Kathrein of Hagens
Berman Sobol Shapiro, UC Hastings
recently received a cy pres award of
more than $363,000 to support the
fellowship. These funds, awarded
in In re Apple iPod Nano Cases, will
help UC Hastings achieve its goal of
granting the Abascal Fellowship on
a yearly basis (it is currently offered
biennially). The fellowship is named
in honor of Ralph Santiago Abascal,
a pioneering legal services lawyer
who won landmark decisions in the
1970s on behalf of farm workers,
welfare recipients and undocumented
immigrants.
“We are honored and thrilled to
receive these funds,” says Sari
Zimmerman, assistant dean for the
Office of Career & Professional
Development. “The students
who want to do public service
are so passionate that it’s not an
exaggeration to say that this award
can make dreams come true.”
