Outpatient therapy
services

This leaflet has been written for patients
and carers to provide some information
about our department. Please do not
hesitate to contact us if you have any
questions.
Who are we and what do we do?
We are a therapies team comprising of
Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists
and Speech and Language Therapists.
We see people with neurological conditions
who are referred by consultants at the
National Hospital for Neurology and
Neurosurgery. We offer a specialist
outpatient service for assessment and
advice on on-going management.
Physiotherapists will assess your
movement, mobility and balance. They aim
to help you achieve the greatest level of
activity using the best quality of movement
possible.
Occupational Therapists will assess how
any difficulties you may have affect aspects
of everyday living at home, work or leisure.
Speech and Language Therapists will
assess any difficulties you have with either
communicating or swallowing.
All our therapists will work with you to help
you to achieve your maximum potential in
these areas. If you would prefer to be
referred to your local services please let us
know and we will organise this for you.
Where to find us
We are located on the first floor, Albany
Wing, National Hospital for Neurology and
Neurosurgery.
What will we do on your first visit?

Take details of your history.
Find out about your current problems
and needs.
Prioritise any areas of difficulty.
Discuss your therapy and treatment
options with you.
Work out a treatment plan and or goals
and a time frame to work towards.
Refer you on to your local service if this
is more appropriate.
What can you expect from us?
When we receive your doctor’s referral we
will contact you by letter or telephone to
offer you an appointment.
We will continue to assess your treatment
and progress during and at the end of the
planned treatment. If appropriate at the
end of your planned treatment you may be
given a period of time where you can come
back and see us in case problems arise.
