development today UCM TODAY Nigerian Alum Honors Mother through Scholarship Charles Olaiya, who earned a Ph.D. from the University of Tulane, honored his mother by recently starting a scholarship through the UCM Foundation. Dixie Laval knows how to make an impression. She’s spent decades earning a national reputation as a photographer who excels in animal portrait and window light studies. Laval has made a distinguished career of recording moments of history in photographic images as well as sharing her technical skills with others. Now, at the invitation of UCM’s photography program, she has donated 26 of her original prints to the J.C. Kirkpatrick Library’s Special Collections. The applicant must also be either an international student from Nigeria or from a U.S. inner city, preferably New Orleans. They must express an interest in returning to the inner city or African homeland to work and encourage others to seek higher education. Olaiya’s special interest in New Orleans came while pursuing his doctor of science degree at the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, where he graduated in 2006. He also studied industrial hygiene at UCM, getting a master’s degree in 1993, and at the University of Texas, San Antonio, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in 1990. —Jeff Murphy ’76 hs, ’80, ’95 electronic environment,” she said. Laval started her career in the late 1940s with Leo Stern Studios in Kansas City. She opened her own studio in Raytown, MO, in the late 1960s, and later worked as a supervisor and laboratory consultant for Meisel Photochrome, Custom Color Corporation and McDonald International. She also has taught in a variety of venues, developing several educational aids. In 1984, Laval received the designation of Master Photographer from the Professional Photographers of America. She also served as president of the Greater Kansas City Chapter of the Professional Photographers of America in 1976, as well as president of the Missouri Professional Photographers of America from 1994 to 1996. In 2003, Laval was named a Fellow by the American Society of Photographers. The master photographer’s work is still featured in national advertising. page 24 winter 2006
